It was iconic enough to launch her to worldwide fame, and the production on the album was excellent. To this day, it remains a fan favorite. I enjoyed the first song...and then quickly got more and more bored as the songs went on. Most of them just sound too similar in production without memorable-enough writing to keep me engaged.

Lana Del Rey's "Born to Die" is one of the MOST disappointing albums? I agree it was maligned at the time and took awhile to find its audience, but didn't it influence the next generation of pop divas as well as maintain a place on the record charts for over a decade? Hearing Melon talk about Born to Die you would get an impression that the album was such a hype killer for Lana's career and dissapointed just about everyone.... sure he is right about it being polarizing at the begining but considering it is decade old let's recap: ●This album is still charting today - it has 575+ weeks at BBD top 200 and is 2 longest charting album by a female and it is coming for the 1st place ● Pitchfork recentlyish basically apologised for their obvious hate campaign against this album and raised it's score ●Many today's top female artists cite this album as their inspiration and what got them into making music e.g. Billie Eilish ● This album has a range of 5-7 mil spotify streams daily - which is insane for a decade old album, mainly because TikTok has introduced this album to younger gen ● Also songs from BTD get viral all the time: SS, Radio, Diet Mountain Dew... Not bad from one of the most disapointing albums of 2010s...

The hatred Anthony has for old Lana is wild lmao. He just diminishes those early album's influences ALL the time.
@tacosavings97512 ай бұрын
I don't think he's denying it's influence or popularity. I think it's more context for how there was a definite age gap in fans of Lana that was kinda weird considering people her age generally fucking hated her music when she came onto the scene but younger people gravitated to it immediately. It's sorta rare for an artist to skew younger right out of the box the way she did and then eventually become universally accepted as great. And I relate because I too thought the album was pretentious bullshit when it came out and eventually came around on Lana as she kept building on her sound. The only way I can put the skepticism around LDR among her peers is akin to how people might view a freshman dating a senior. From the freshmen peers perspective nothing is cooler. From the senior peers perspective, the only reason that freshman is dating that senior is because nobody gets how fucking lame the senior is. A person Lana's age when she released that album putting that particular music out was and remains extremely fucking lame. But I also get why people who were in their teens or early 20s wouldn't get that perspective.

I will never stop defending that TOOL album. Its songwriting, both lyrically and structurally, is captivating, and the production makes me feel like I’ve been transported to a rainy cyberpunk city. I love the interludes too, which I know even fans don’t like to defend. It’s just a meditative, mellow album that doesn’t force itself on you, but gives you room to breathe and explore its intricacies. It’s definitely not on the same level as Ænema or Lateralus, but it still makes for an interesting and, in my opinion, pretty great listen.

@@josuediaz8242 yeah I honestly agree with a lot of Fantano’s music takes and I’ve found some of my favorite albums through him, this is just an album where I think my taste and his differ significantly.
@biliousvicarduds90892 ай бұрын
It does seem like he's basing his opinion of that album on its consistent mellow "vibe", as though Tool is not Tool without more punkish interjections ala Hooker With a Penis. I'm really not sure what he even liked so much about previous albums considering Fear Inoculum is clearly wrought from the same DNA as tracks like Right In Two and Third Eye and Reflection. He calls that era "progressive and meditative" but Fear Inoculum "doesn't go much of anywhere"? The only real difference is that the build is a bit slower and more careful, there is still very clearly Tool-brand progression occurring over a similar timescale, but to him a "payoff" is Maynard yelling a bunch maybe? Like Tool needs to make sure they're being "alt-metal" enough to keep Anthony awake, yet he'll listening to very droning repetitive stuff like Swans and appreciate the crescendo there. I think my biggest criticism is that some of it feels too familiar, that they're reusing some of their iconic riffs and production effects a little too liberally, but the songwriting itself is some of the most satisfying and consistent in their entire discography. I think his opinion is more undercooked than the album

It's crazy to see AT LONG LAST ASAP here, where, in fact, most hip-hop fans considered it as Rocky's best album to date. Born To Die as well, when in fact, it paved the way for new artists that are now big, such as Lorde and Billie Eilish, just to name a few. It was also released when Electro Stupid Lyrics Pop Club songs are at their peak, so you can say it's like Kanye ending the gangsta era of hip-hop.
