Why are you comparing Sing to God to Naked City? Naked City is a collection of minute-long avant-garde jazz and grindcore freakouts. Aside from both being experimental there's not really much that links those two albums... Plus Cardiacs have records that predate Naked City and Zorn has records that predate those Cardiacs records and so on and so on. It's not like they're two artists from totally different eras, they're both from the early to mid '80s. I'm sorry Anthony, but I declare shenanigans on that opinion.

Cardiacs are by far my favorite band, but I think that's mostly because I explored every nook and cranny of Tim's brilliance on several other projects he's been a part of. I did a cover of one of my favorite songs of all time, "Don't You Ail, Flash the Sea to Steam". There's probably a KZbin video of it somewhere if anyone is curious. If you know what's good for you, just listen to the original and skip my cover. I found this review because a fellow Cardiacs fan was freaking out about you saying anything negative about the record on Facebook, which I think is pretty ridiculous. Everyone comes from their own frame of reference. There isn't really a right or wrong when it comes to art. What surprised me was when you said you thought it was OK. I've never heard a lukewarm reaction to Cardiacs before. It seemed like people either loved them or hated them because they can be a bit extreme at times, as you mentioned in your video. I listened to and played a lot of metal as a teenager, so I'm guessing my tolerance for noise is probably a little higher than normal - whatever "normal" is. Anyway, thanks for even mentioning the record. I hope more people will at least give it a chance because their music can be pretty life-changing for some people (like me). I haven't listened to John Zorn in a long time, so I'm going to hunt down that Naked City record you mentioned and give it another listen.
@justingrignon87493 жыл бұрын
I'm a big fan too. Stepping away from it, I can understand being lukewarm. The album is really long, and probably feels longer if you are put off by Tim's voice, or prog fiddling. I also reject notions that no one can say anything bad about them. Sometimes it feels like prog fans judge regular people who don't "get it," as if they are failing themselves by expressing a contrary opinion. I still think the band is immensely underrated, but it just took me a long time to find them. And when you bring The Sea Nymphs into the question, there is no question that they are unusually obscure. Not to mention the brilliant lyrics, which even some fans forget to mention. Tim was a brilliant workaholic.

I remember there being a lot of talk about how he had sold out because the album sounded like money with the production being what it is. Over the years, although I love some of his more classic albums, this one in particular holds a special spot in my heart. Love your take on the album.

Death Magnetic by Metallica is extremely underrated. It has some amazing riffs like the ones in "All Nightmare Long", "Cyanide" and "That was just your life" to give a few. The unforgiven III is at the level of the first one. I can say that is easily the best metallica record post "black album

The quote was that Sing to God was beyond anything THEY had done before, not beyond anything ANYONE had ever done before. Though even so, you'd be hard pressed to find an album so imaginative, creative, zany and chaotic as Sing to God. It's probably the best album of all time.

The Stage by Avenged Sevenfold is so under appreciated and underrated. Coming off a pretty good but watered down radio metal album and then doing a surprise drop of their next album (the Stage) without any hype didn’t help this album. But it has some of their best songs with the self title, the catchy af God Damn and the 17 minute epic Exist. It’s also a great concept album about the rise of technology. Blends a lot of genres well and holds up very well. 10/10

Don’t know if you’ve talked about this band too much, but would love to hear a Sonic Youth: Worst to Best. Really only heard the hits Teen Age Riot and Kool Thing and some other tracks off of Daydream Nation. Been diving into their other stuff and have loved stuff off their older albums like Evol.

Joshua Jones a little bit. As of right now, have definitely given a deeper dive the aforementioned Evol, Bad Moon Rising, Master-Dik and Dirty. As of right now off of Sister, mainly listened to Beauty Lies In The Eye, but will definitely listen to more. As of right now, although I do still really like Daydream Nation and will say it’s probably still say it’s my favourite of theirs, I can’t deny Death To Our Friends, Green Light and Marilyn Moore off Evol amongst the other tracks

Here are my top 6 (I had to add one more because I couldn’t definitively decide that 5th one 😂) most underrated albums IMO 1. Mos Def- The New Danger (my favorite rap album of all time), AND The Ecstatic. Mos Def does NOT get the recognition he deserves. In my all time top 2 favorite MC’s to ever pick up a mic. 2. Geto Boys- We Can’t Be Stopped- I feel like even in their day, they were maligned, misunderstood, and completely overshadowed by the forces of nature and fate that were the Biggie/Pac years. When actually, they were artists before they’re time. Now they’re all but forgotten. But this is horrorcore perfection, truly a perfect album. 3. Santigold- Santogold- This extremely gifted, beautifully skilled singer songwriter and highly original artist is horribly underrated and under known. This album though? It’s a masterpiece. 4. Yeah Yeah Yeahs- It’s Blitz!- In a post punk world, it’s actually NYC’s Karen O who reigns supreme in her queendom 👑 to sum up this particular album (and they have some incredible albums) in one word: BRILLIANT. And horribly underrated. The whole band is underrated and under known actually. Criminally so. 5. Kings Of Leon- Come Around Sundown- Widely known as the band who has Sex On Fire (yes, that’s a double 😂), it’s actually this album that serves as their most underrated, under appreciated, and under known. When it’s the most incredible journey to go on. LOVE this album. It’s just gorgeous music…where “California (is always) Waiting” 6. The Shins- Wincing The Night Away- This is a band that remains underrated to this day. So rare is it that I hear someone mention them, that I remember the measly two instances when they did 😂. This album. Oh my lord. Words are insufficient to describe the superior cerebral trip this alt band takes you on with an album that you literally cannot help but close your eyes to and get lost in. It’s incredibly magical & dreamy. Perfect use of Synth and sound, haunting vocals that soar, lyrics that get way down in your core, it’s literally a perfect album. Inspired by the band’s primary singer/songwriter’s lifelong chronic insomnia (I relate 10,000%), this concept album is truly one of the best, most underrated and forgotten alt rock albums to come out of the 00’s. However, the album’s music remains fresh and undated, and incredibly timeless. I don’t use this term lightly and always sparingly, but this criminally under mentioned album is ICONIC. A MASTERPIECE. ONE OF THE GENRE’S GREATEST ALBUMS OF ALL TIME. If you’ve never heard it, give your ears the gasm they’ve been longing for. I promise, you won’t regret it; it’s breathtakingly beautiful and brilliant. Honorable Mentions, and just like the above, they’re all albums I ❤️- Stereo Lab*Dots And Loops, La Roux*La Roux, Shabazz Palaces*Lese Majesty, Placebo*Meds, Prince*Under The Cherry Moon (soundtrack), Led Zeppelin*In Through The Out Door, The White Stripes*Get Behind Me Satan, *Fleetwood Mac*Tango In The Night, Queens Of The Stone Age*Era Vulgaris, Stone Temple Pilots*No. 4. And finally, I’m going to stop writing. If you made it this far, give yourself a frikin medal; I know I wrote a novel that exactly zero people asked for. 😂this was fun though. Hopefully he’ll do this listing again one day and I can copy and paste all this 💩 and post it to him 🤣for now though, I’m gonna go listen to The Shins-Wincing The Night Away. Talking about it made me want to hear it right now. Suchhhh a great album 👍🏼

I'd argue for Bowery Electric's 1995 album, "Bowery Electric" as one of the most underrated shoegaze and drone albums of all time. It's one of my favorite albums of all time (currently rated 4th on my chart, as we speak). The textures achieved in the album, alongside the bass work, are incredible. The moods and images that the album evokes lets it compare itself to Loveless. "Beat" is well-received, but I believe it's slightly worse than their 1995 effort. I'd also argue for Drop Nineteen's "Mayfield" demo from 1991. When it gets remastered, it will be on par with the shoegaze trifecta of albums. It's one of the dreamiest albums ever made and the vocals reinforce the emotional tracks well. Finally, Tangerine Dream's "Alpha Centauri" is, in my opinion, one of the best krautrock and ambient albums ever made. It's an experience, rather than a musical production, and it's a very epic and one-of-a-kind one. It is the album that made me a music person.

Definitely My Chemical Romance's debut album, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love. I don't deny that WTTBP is more influential and will always be regarded as an emo pop classic, but their debut is absolutely fucking raw. The story telling is great, sometimes can be pretty eerie, which i like and the screamo/post hardcore style of the album influenced a lot of upcoming screamo/post hardcore bands with their DIY raw style of punk.

To me one of the most underrated albums ever is Nomad's Revenge by Billain, it is accompanied by a cyberpunk short story and it's sound is unlike anything I've ever heard.
