I think the way that we might see a resurgence of music videos is ironically through tiktok. The reason they became popular in the first place was through mtv where there was a fully syndicated place for music discovery and you needed a video to be on there, because it was also tv. If you want to be technical about it, the tiktok music promotion scene is just really basic music videos. And we’ve seen how insanely successful that can be, connor price being a prime example where he essentially became famous by posting a bunch of short music videos for each song. There’s also been a rise of people complaining about how dry and basic all of those videos are. I think it’s feasible that we see a resurgence in cinematic/complex music videos designed to market on tiktok in snippets.

As a fellow metal enjoyer the shirt thing in the video is its own thing that is separate from what you talked about although the "not a real listener" shirt thing is definitely more prevalent. I think the "not wearing the shirt of the band you're seeing" thing may also be more of a thing at classic rock concerts as my mom talked about how she doesn't understand why people have that mindset (and I've been to my fair share of both classic rock and metal concerts) but I think it is present for both.

I remember seeing an immense amount of praise on social media in 2017 and I feel as though it just lends itself to the particular vitality of tiktok in a way that his older work isn’t able to. I was honestly pretty unsurprised that that song of all songs would see a second wave of success as it follows a pop structure moreso than even any song off the album. Personally I’m so over the “metal and classical music are so alike!” take. It shaves off the nuance of the histories and styles of both classical, with its movements to say the very least, and metal as well. And, let’s be real, metal music overall just hasn’t reached the compositional prowess that has flooded classical for centuries. Is there a Mahler or a Debussy or a Prokofiev of Metal? Hard to say, only time will tell, but I find this comparison dumb and spread around too much to say anything new.
@Apollo_ITA3 ай бұрын
while i do agree that it shaves off nuance metal and classical are pretty similar and many metal fans love classical (me included) and about the "there is no compsitional prowess" go listen to sabaton, they are fire and are very distinct
@kirkwahmmett16663 ай бұрын
I 100% agree although I do think it's also important to mention the cases where the metal is clearly influenced or even featuring classical music or orchestration (FGA for example) but even then, it's moreso that the metal is influenced by it and not that they are "similar"
@honeycomblord9384Ай бұрын
I'd say there already have been a few creative geniuses in metal, despite how young the genre is. Chuck Schuldiner (vocalist/guitarist of the band Death) comes to mind as a figure who consistently helped push metal forward throughout his whole career.
@Randomjackass13518 күн бұрын
I think people are just making the comparison based on the theoretical aspects of music. Probably because metal and classical are the two genres where western audiences are most likely to encounter the Phrygian or Mixolydian modes, and both genres utilize dense melodies and solos. That’s kind of the paradox of genres. Like is a genre based on its sonic and theoretical characteristics or its cultural and aesthetic ones? Who knows?

2:28 I'm gonna be completely honest, while i definitely don't fully agree with this take, I do understand where they are coming from - I don't really follow rap/hip hop very much, and seeing the beef become so big just seems... not cool? Like it's an industry where it is acceptable to just make a song about how much you hate another person? Like no matter how bad of a person you are, you should be allowed some chance to grow as a person. And also, rap is really hard for me to get into. I won't say all rap sucks because, it definitely doesn't, but a lot of rap and hip hop really doesn't work for me, and i can't ever see myself liking it. Personally I'm really not into, and this is a LOT of generalization but bear with me, the dark/explicit lyrical content, frequent use of autotune (gives me a feeling that I can only describe as "icky"), the less emphasis on instrumentals, the less upbeat-ness, and a lot of rap is just kinda boring to me. There are definitely songs and artists that I still like, and rarely all of these points affect one individual song, but like, when you think about it, its kind of surprising that rap is as mainstream as it is. Anyway my point is, I disagree with the take that "Rap sucks" but there are a lot of elements to it that are understandable to not like. by the way, to give you an idea of my actual music taste, my favorite music is: jazz (I play saxophone), rock (especially 90s), D&B + some other EDM, maybe i'm just basic idk take what i say with a grain of salt

About the takes about popular, tiktok music and the last one too: the answer is capitalism. In a nutshell, big companies paid for their artists to play on the radio before, and pay the algorithm nowadays. It's very hard for independent artists to insert themselves and consolidate their careers, even if they're amazing. In the end, it doesn't matter if someone's music is awesome or shitty, because what most determines if they'll be popular or not, is this oligopolistic market.

i'm like a month late to this but two things: i'm amused to see the turn around on the "wearing merch of the band to their concert" thing, but my opinions on that are very much informed by hipster culture b/c the logic was... okay you're at the concert, everyone already knows you like the band, wearing the merch is try hard LOL. the better move was to wear the merch of an even cooler and more obscure band to a concert and get cred points that way. i still won't wear merch to a concert, with rare exception, although it doesn't bother me as much when other people do as it used to. and in regards to the music videos... if that's what you want, consider opening your minds and hearts to kpop LOL not every mv is a cinematic masterpiece, but there's some really great stuff out there, and since visuals are such a big aspect of the whole kpop package, a lot of effort is generally put into the mvs at least looking good. but there's also a lot of mvs with stories that span multiple mvs and albums and a lot of really interesting stuff! even most things from groups with less money will be impressive. but a lot of people won't give it a chance, and i used to be like you, i swear! but then i let go of my preconceived notions and decided to have fun!

Not only are you off by 2 decades, but that just isn't accurate. The Beatles were a pop band from 1963-1965, but they quickly went alternate after Revolver and changed their whole sound. I.E compare 'Love Me Do' to 'I'm Only Sleeping,' 'Tomorrow Never Knows,' or 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps.'
