I think it was an attempt to cut people out of the pop charts. The idea of pop and R&B being different genres is patently fucking ridiculous now, although I wouldn't mind if we redefined the genres to mean different things (ie pop just meaning popular music while R&B and bubblegum(?) could actually refer to stylistic markers and not what skin tone the singer has).

Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. Streaming has made the charts more accurate and relevant today than they ever have been. And pre-1990s, they were a complete joke. They weren't even automated, and a lot of it was guess work. Rolling Stones attempting to copy and rival Billboard in 2019 with their own charts should be a testament to how much more culturally relevant and lucrative industry-watching is than it ever has been. The problem with these particular lists (and all of Billboard's genre charts) is that they have a strange and largely outdated vision of genre. A lot of it is based on grouping songs by what radio stations they play on. And you're right, radio isn't very 21st century.

Cole you hit it on the money for me. None of those song represented hip hops substance just its aesthetics. I understand its based on commercial success but as songs these are fun but lacking heavily in value. Financial value may be a priority for billboard but when you just throw together two different genres associated with black culture, and list songs that only vaguely resemble the essence of either genre you set a precedent for the level of respect had for it. And it is about race. At least have a quality list if youre going to make a quantity list. I dont respect it at all. Post Molone is now hip hop or R&B. He piggys off of it. Macklemore uses rap but doesnt have hip hop in his essense either. It is dissappointing that these people represent the culture. Even if they boosted the size and commercial value of hip hop and R&B they gutted the soul out of it. Thats what this list says to me.

The Blacker the Berry? Humble? DNA? Maad City? Kendrick is not only hugely popular, but genuinely influential with half the stuff on TPAB and GKMC.

humble was on here, but it's the most overrated kendrick song anyways. it's not even close to be the best song on damn, his worst album. if all billboard cares about is popularity at least include king kunta, alright, backseat freestyle and maad city because they are/were all popular as fuck at the time and are some of his best tracks (backseat freestyle is at least better than humble)

If you think this is bad, you should see their overall decade end list where they have Girls Like You over Despacito, God’s Plan, Call Me Maybe, Rolling In The Deep, Lucid Dreams, and a bunch of other decade defining hits, also Hotline Bling is only #92 and Gangnam Style, and Rap God aren’t even on the list wtf
@thirtyyearoldmulberryfield

At least I get some of those picks, even if I don't care for most of those songs. Many of them were massive/inescapable and for better and worse represent some of the prevelant styles of the decade. But these genre specific lists feel like active trolling or at least a bad understanding of what should represent these genres.
@skellez
@skellez 4 жыл бұрын
That's a decade end list based on overall performace, GLY spend a record 33 weeks in the top 10 and then lingered some months later, that's on the general public
@ronstoppable5659
@ronstoppable5659 4 жыл бұрын
@skellez That’s not on the general public, that’s on radio stations, seriously it spent 16 weeks on the top of the radio charts but never even reached the top 5 on US Spotify or Apple Music, if Billboard only went by what the general public is actively choosing to listen to, Lucid Dreams wouldn’t have been blocked by GLY for the top spot and GLY still would’ve been a hit but it wouldn’t be anywhere near a decade end list

I remember in the 1980s, the chart used to be called hot R&B/Soul songs. Rap was not part of this chart. They kicked the soul stuff out to Urban AC. Aretha Franklin dominated this chart.
