They be literally saying this on songs from a year ago no matter what year it is. Yeah it's depressing. Like people who say black eyed peas peaked in 2009 when they fell off after 2005. Feel free to disagree but this is the power of nostalgia. Hard for a millennial to understand when a song from 2010s is someone's "childhood song"

If you don't hate Pharrell William's "Happy", you have not worked in retail during that time. There's something truly sinister about the way Pharrell condescends you, telling you to be happy 10+ times a day over and over again when you just dealt with a customer insisting their McDonald's coupon will get them free sandwiches in the deli.

this is not true, but the Bechdel test has never actually been a serious metric of feminist critique outside of Buzzfeed. even Alison Bechdel, in the comic it comes from, was just using this "test" (for those unaware, whether a movie has a scene with two women talking with each other about something other than a man) as a joke. like, yeah, it's an interesting observation that so much of media thinks women can only ever think about guys, but the test Bechdel's characters came up with was just an excuse for them to go watch Alien (iirc-may have been Aliens) at the theater. it's cute and fun, a very quintessential queer comic, but not the unilateral, analytical framework it has been built up to be just cuz it has a catchy name and is a fun game to play. many movies pass the Bechdel test superficially, and are completely anti-feminist (see: the Pitch Perfect series and their fatphobia, queerbaiting, etc.), while lots of films with actually really great, empowering women leads fail the test (see: Pacific Rim). it has always been entirely meaningless by itself, and is only a decent tool for showing _wider trends_ in Western cinema. Bechdel herself has routinely had to clear this up for pop feminists who take it as gospel, recently creating a new proviso, so that white pop feminists don't go around degrading movies which, say, focus on the experience of gay men (as happened earlier this year when someone decided to act like a dingus and say a movie about gay Asian men got an "F-" on the Bechdel test; they apologized, but Bechdel also stepped in to say that the movie passed actually the test).

I was on holiday in Ulan Batuur, Mongolia, a few years back. Me and my friends walked into some random restaurant for some authentic Mongolian food and 'Happy' was playing. It finished, gave a 5 second pause and then repeated. It played about 18 times in a row the whole time we were there. It felt like that John Mulaney bit about 'What's New Pussycat?' - 5 times in a row is hellish, but after like 13 plays in a row you become almost euphoric. It was a dry day apparently so no alcohol either. 'Happy' really is just that if you let it into your heart. Clearly the two staff running the place seemed to think so.

Exactly 5 years later in 2019, my relationship with anime declined once I figured out how the Japanese anime industry works. Now, on the verge of getting back into Western animation this year (2024), these issues have affected me deeply that I can say I myself have to fix this or else I'm dropping out of the anime game entirely, either by tomorrow, the very end of this year or the first month of the next year (2025).

Timber is a great song for the dance floor cuz when the beat drops you do a trust fall with a partner and the crowd goes wild

It gets worse ..I took a look at the billboard charts going forward and I was like "Jesus now I know why people say today's music sucks" because they're not on channels that discuss great music they wouldn't find in the mainstream.

One Republic is one of those bands that are just there. I don't ever recall any crazy publicity stories or controversy in the news about them. They're a little bland, but sometimes I like a saltine cracker y'know.

My memories of this year were plagued by two giant, never ending tortures. My parents rejecting me coming out as gay and All Of Me by John Legend playing on repeat. Honestly I don’t know which one left worse scars

It's interesting looking back at these years. I started my teenage years in 2013 and the angst combined with the genuinely shit music made me develop a "pop music sucks" personality that it took a while to get out of.

I never had too much of a problem with "Happy," but looking at it through my 12-year-old daughter's eyes, it takes on a different connotation. She describes it as the forced music that schools often blast into gyms and auditoriums during assemblies, etc., to the point where it takes on a feeling of almost toxic positivity. She told me that this song feels to her like a school telling you "Be happy."

It used to be Don't Worry, Be Happy by Bobby McFerrin (who's actually very talented but that was his one semi-novelty hit)
