Pasting my response in this thread as well. I'm a little late with these, maybe. But if you want some good short (if 20 mins is short ) videos on this, here are some to check out, the first two lean in on topics you already covered, the last one might be interesting on its own. (And I guess is my recommendation): Warhammer 40,000 Timeline in 20 minutes. Every Warhammer 40,000 Faction in 20 minutes. Every Warhammer 40,000 Faction is bad ! (And Here's Why) All by Arbitor Ian.

After this, we usually direct newcomers to Bricky's "Every Single Space Marine Legion in a Nutshell" video and then his "What is Warhammer 40,000? | Timeline of 40k Lore". In addition to The Exploring Series and Scholar's Lore, I think you'd also enjoy Weshammer's videos as well. Can't wait for the next video! :)

One thing bricky actually got wrong was about angron because angron did not cut out parts of his brain to make himself angrier it was actually captured while he was young and his captors put these things called the butcher's nails in his brain how much keep him in a constant state of anger and pain if he isn't killing something.

I recall hearing that there was a time where he was able to remove the effect of Butcher's Nails, and in that moment he was so horrified by what he had become and what he had done that he decided to continue being a monster, so as to not face that reality. He is truly tragic. Also, what a hilarious name; Really it is the worst hangover from when 40K was mostly only a parody of fantasy and sci-fi tropes.

The Orks possess a psychic resonance that allows them to warp the fabric or reality at their whims, on the basis that enough orks can be convinced of its validity, for instance, A mechanicus techpriest once decided to study Ork technology. Upon examination it was found that the rifle that had just before been being used by an ork to fire massive explosive rounds was in fact little more than a scrapped together box of metal with a handle screwed on and a bunch of spent casings stuffed into it. Because it looks like a gun, and because they believe it's a gun, it works like a gun, this would be an incredibly powerful ability were it not for the fact that the more an Ork understands this psychic power or how reality works, the less capable it becomes

I always laugh when i remember the story of few orcs that were outside in space removing parts on a battleship they just destroyed (or something). Since they didnt think that they need suits in space they just went out and started dismatling the ship untill other orcs came about, of course in space suits. They told them that orcs need space suits to breathe in space and that instant the orcs widouth spacesuits just died from lack of oxygen.

Ironically enough, the Necrons, in spite of being one of the more bleak and grimdark factions in the setting have one of the funniest characters: Trazyn the Infinite. In essence, Trazyn is on a mission to preserve everything he can get ahold of, be that people, weapons, artefacts or technology. Basically, he wants to make sure stuff doesn't get lost if things go to shit. However, he essentially acts like the 40k equivalent of the British Museum and expands his collection just by cheerfully wandering the galaxy, stealing things and abducting folks to add to his collection. He's also incredibly smug and likes to talk shit. There's an excellent novel called "The Infinite and the Divine" that's pretty much all about the antics and shenanigans resulting from his rivalry with another Necron lord. Where 90% of all Necron characters are lawful evil, Trazyn is chaotic neutral which just makes him a super fun character.

One of the most terrifying aspects of the Dark Eldar, is that their profound technology has basically destroyed their society utterly. The Drukhari do not spare their own, if you aren't viscous enough, ruthless enough, and powerful enough to stave off your fellow Drukhari, you will find yourself out-politic'd like Game of Thrones, and find yourself the subject of eternal torture. This is because Drukhari are so advanced, they can not only clone people, but also transfer souls into new bodies, effectively allowing those influential enough to be immortal. Because you can just clone a Drukhari, the Drukhari do not value any life, there is no social contract between them, and the only thing keeping them in line are the crime-syndicate style politics of those who climbed their way to the top, enforcing reasonable levels of trechery to occur. They could create literal miracles to save the galaxy and fight off chaos, including slaanesh. But they don't, because the moment one of them tries to preform acts that don't directly benefit themselves, the others will pounce on them to take advantage of what they see as a vulnerable rival. It is an entirely self-perpetuating cycle of horrific crimes against exsistence, and that I find truly terrifying about them.

A bit more info about the Harlquins: - Their main job is the preservation of Eldar's history and the protection of the Black Library. Anyone can attempt to enter the Black Library, if they can convince the Harlequin that their need for information is important enough, and they can only access the information that they requested, nothing less, nothing more. If someone tries to sneak around, Cegorach kicks them out -They like to go to different Craftworlds or Drukhari cities to put up shows to convey the Eldar history and and try to once again unify the race. They carry this mentality in battle, where their fights are more like elaborate sword-dances than an actual brawl. They have special belts that show their position in the past, present and future at the same time, transforming their movement in technicolor streaks of lights than actual movement and special masks that can record and replay anthing that they play so sometimes they record the dying faces of their enemies to break the morale of the opponent by charging towards them with the faces of the one they have killed. They are empowered by Cegorach to be on the same level as Space Marines -They are also method actors, and sometimes they have to portray the birth of Slaanesh, so someone has to play the part of Slaanesh. These Harlequins are called Solitaire, and they are absolutely terryfing. They are imbued with power by both Cegorach and Slaanesh, making them the equivalent of Custodes (the one that protects the Golden Throne) or an entire squad of Space Marine alone.

@cyberash3000 There are no different human races, it is relic of old racist theories that are no longer considered valid. It's basically a social construct and I guess in terms of Warhammer they could be considered different 'race'. Starcraft and 40k, Warhammer Fantasy and Warcraft it was all supposed to be WH40k and Warhammer Fantasy. Basically back in the day Blizzard was small company, more like group of people with great gaming ideas, small developing body and no pedigree. They approached Games Workshop with idea of making Warhammer Fantasy (Warcraft) and WH40k (Starcraft) RTS games and Games Workshop was like "you guys are small fish, piss off". So they kinda went and made their own shit, which is now biggest phenomenon in gaming (I mean Blizzard is kinda shadow of itself now because of all scandals and Activision hatchetmen knocking on their doors constantly, but still Warcraft and Starcraft are one of the best RTS games ever created). Orks are insane and I love them. Apparently, back in the old days of Warhammer their power of belief was so strong that if you handed an Ork a pipe, and called it a gun then bullets would start flying out. If I recall there was even a time where one of the biggest Orks was a science guy, and through the power of belief from his large following he made a nightmarish floating hell parody of science that like, drove guardsmen insane from invading it. They also have Ork gods, also probably born from sheer Ork belief, Gork and Mork, and like Ork psykers can just summon like the fist of Mork to just punch the battlefield. It's a grand ol' time with Da Boyz of the Orks. I wish I could remember a good Ork deep dive video that goes into the Orks a bit more, because their stuff is fun, whacky, weird and even kind of cool, so I hope somebody with better memory suggests a good Ork video, because they are interesting.

The Space Marines' extra artificial organs and genetics (collectively called geneseed) is based on their Primarchs, who are one of a kind demigods. Luetin is great! But Luetins vids are long and they are also kinda aimed at a public that has at least a basic understanding of the setting. But for lore explanation and interesting speculation not many can beat him imo. Shorter 40K lore content creators are definitely around. Majorkill comes to mind for example. It's important to realise that Bricky only barely touches upon the lore in these vids(which is the point, cause he wants to lay down some bare bones, and he does a good job of it, mostly, he didn't do the Harlequins or the Worldeaters and angron justice in this vid, but that is fine) he could easily make hour long lore vids on every single faction which would still not be near complete. the 40K lore iceberg is truly massive.

On the topic of orks, the psychic field they project isn't so much the power of imagination as it is greasing probability. In his example with the car. The WAAAGH! field (yes) will fuck with the odds and probability- so when it turns back on no they didn't run out of fuel, the engine just had a hiccup and the gauge just broke. In the ttrpg this comes with a couple of ork traits. 1: Ork weapons lose unreliable in ork hands, so it jams less but not completely perfect. 2: Too 'Ard to Care. This is a bit more extreme, essentially allows an ork of sufficient size and strength to ignore environmental factors. Such as hard vacuum. Just don't think about it and it won't be a problem.

So the thing about the T'au is they are the new young kids on the block, and they have other races that fight with them, but their rules have been meh for a long time so people just take more battlesuits. However coming soon those other races are getting reworked so we'll see them now, and the T'au have taken a few punches to the face so they are a bit more hardened than when they started.

As far as I know, the main reason Starcraft didn't end up being a 40K project is because for the vast majority of the existence of 40K, GW has been extremely protective of their IP, they're super litigious (they once sued the estate of an author who wrote a book called Space Marine saying it violated their copyright. The book was written in the 1920's.) and have been well known to strike down KZbin videos and fan projects they think are a little "too good", if your fan movie is crap and unpopular, they don't care, but get popular? The lawyers are coming, and you will either find yourself destitute or working for GW because they gave you no other choice.

Well yeah, but Starcraft would have been a licensed game, anyways. From what I've heard, GW had some kind of falling-out with Blizzard and pulled out of a deal they had, so Blizzard just needed to find a use for all the Warhammer assets they had made without getting sued.

We always followed the big Grimdark factions forgetting that once the galaxy wasn't like this, so we now have a point of view from a simpler, more peaceful time, and how their view now slams into the reality that is the 41st millennium.

One of my favorite details about the Orks is how their power of imagination is a two-edged sword. There's a story about either the Imperial Guards or a Planetary Defense Force defending a planet from an Ork Waaagh and they were running out of ammo when a soldier or possibly a commisar out of desperation pointed his empty gun at an ork and yelled "BANG!" and the ork immediately died, because it BELIEVED it had been shot... and after a few seconds of abject confusion the rest of the human soldiers followed suit and succesfully fended off the ork horde without any ammo by just pointing their guns and shouting "bang!" at them. Another story is about how Commisar Yarrick lost his hand and replaced it with an ork power claw, and it works because all the orks on the battlefield saw him stick his bloody stump into the power claw believe it works and have spread tales of "Ol' Bale-eye" Yarrick to other ork tribes, resulting in Yarrick becoming deeply respected by all orks as "Da orkiest humie aloive", and Yarricks ocular implant can shoot lasers out of it, because that's what the orks think it's for.

Orks basically have the ability to passively and without their knowledge channel the warp into their machines - basically, because they believe it works, it works. The warp makes the machine work even though it shouldn't. They think that painting things red makes them go faster, so it does go faster. They think painting things purple makes them sneaky, so it does indeed make them sneaky.

You should watch the every space marine legion explained video from him. He speaks only about the individual space marine legions of the first founding, and he explains the characteristics of each primarch, and their legion. There is another cool video about the history of the wh40k universe: TIMELINE of the 40K UNIVERSE by Trazyn the Infinite. Trazyn is a necron collector. He has a vast museum world which couldn't be traversed in several human lifetimes. He collects objects of importance, and even traps characters or full battling armies in tesseract labyrinths (basically a pocket dimension where time is frozen) to display them in his museum. He was awake for most of the time of our history and he gladly collected everything he found interesting (he is a meme because he is like people with vast collection of armies on their shelves, he collects and puts his collection on a display). When he sensed that Cadia was attacked by the Black Legion's 13th black crusade, he intervened on the side of the defenders. He helped Archmagos Dominus Belisarius Cawl (the head tech priest) understand the necron technology that was on Cadia so when the archmagos activated the necron pylon, the energies of the warp disappeared from the planet and the chaos space marines without the assistance of their chaos gods could be dealt with. The necron pylon was the real target of the black crusade. The pylon resonates with the warp and keeps the warp energies at bay. Because Cadia stood on the edge of the Eye of Terror (a huge eternal warp storm), that pylon's function was of utmost importance (although the defenders didn't know that, Abaddon, the leader of the Black Legion knew it). And Trazyn knew that if the world fell, the eye of terror would grow to cut the galaxy in half. Trazyn even released some of his collection to fight alongside to defenders of Cadia. Among them were Custodes, 10000 years old space marines and an also 10000 years old inquisitor. The sad part is that although the defenders could repell the attackers, Abaddon brought in the remains of a moon sized planet killer spaceship and launched it toward Cadia. This doomed the planet and tragically, the planet broke. But the planet broke before the guard did. In the final moment before the impact, Trazyn didn't want to leave without a souvenir, so he trapped the beaten, battered heroic leader of the cadian guard in a tesseract labyrinth and told him that such a great hero should not die in such a meaningless manner. Trazyn is not a d*ckhead how Bricky says in this video.

Your reaction at 16:20 was so wonderful. I appreciate you doing these videos that you aren't accustomed to doing in terms of length, I really like your takes on lots of things. 54:00 Games Workshop is vicious about their IP. So vicious in fact, that saying the slightest thing they disapprove of, even doing as little as making a piece of art that they somehow found out about way back in the 90's would get you a cease and desist letter. They had massive issues with Blizzard, then a relatively unknown studio, and totally disagreed with them on a number of levels, so they yanked the IP from Blizzard when the game was nearly done. So Blizzard had to go back to the drawing table, reskinned, revoiced and redid the animations for nearly every unit, and then made Starcraft out of what they had already done. Games Workshop _SERIOUSLY_ fucked up, that would have gotten 40k into the household of almost every western tween.

Games Workshop (owners of the Warhammer IP) are notorious for guarding and protecting their IP, almost an extreme. Starcraft very likely was birthed because the game development team/producers wanted to do something with the game that Games Workshop was not okay with as it deviated too far from the IP. This could be something they couldn't write around as a one off event or they just didn't have enough control over the creative process that made them uncomfortable and pull the IP license from the game. Which leaves the developers in an awkward position of a partially or mostly finished game and they can either scrap or make it legally distinct enough from the original IP that Games Workshop can't go after them. This is likely what happened, but of course no one wants to admit to it.

The bit where Ork technology works because they believe it can and vehicles can run without fuel based on the power of their belief isn't actually canon, it's a fan misconception that's run wild for years. There's a whole lot of that in 40k lore. It's implied that their gestalt psychic field may push things a little bit but definitely not at the level of "if they just pretend they have fuel the truck still runs".

its still pretty close to it. if one of the orks is told to refill the fuel tank and pisses in it, they are probably good to go again. a lot of the ork imagination memes are not canon, but some run on the same logic and would work in canon.

That's been since debunked, but it was a theory at the time. If the Tyranids were running from something, it wouldn't make sense to run towards that direction, would it? These successes however I think bread a sort of "Dang it, we need to make that money now and fast." in later leaders, and so now they hand out the license to any one even if they shouldn't be allowed to finish the poorly designed games they make. Though with that said, in more recent history it seems GW has seen what that did, and it slowing down who gets to make games, and are turning it around to get more good games out now.

as an ork lover, my favourite weapons are the ones that are traditionally not weapons but orks have found a way; the bubblechukka, tellyporta blasta, and shokk attack gun. Bubblechukka is weaponized force-fields, it fires bubbles of unstable force-fields which can do anything from pop harmlessly in a gentle breeze or explode and flip tanks, this is my favourite thing ever. Tellyporta blasta pretty self explanatory a gun that teleports whatever it shoots at randomly, 5 feet to the left, 100 feet up in the sky, into a wall, narratively just really fun. Shokk attack gun is weaponized wormhole travel, it sucks in snotlings, which are just tiny more goblin goblins, and fires them through the warp, driving them crazy in the process, into things, such as inside tanks, or your stomach.

For how space marines work without their primarchs: The loyalist Legions were all broken up into Chapters of around 1,000 marines and are led by high ranking marines. Their primarchs all died, “died” or disappeared in mysterious circumstances, which let the setting exist without them in the tabletop games. The traitor Legions mostly broke themselves up into different warbands, each led by whoever is the strongest / most powerful / most sadistic, etc. among them. Some of these warbands are still serving their legions/primarchs at a distance, others are purely doing their own thing. The surviving primarchs are all (or all bar the ones who are missing) daemon princes, and can’t fully exist outside the warp for prolonged periods, so don’t really appear outside of major storylines (again to keep them off the tabletop). When a particularly powerful Chaos starts a major crusade, they might rally one or more legions back together and might even summon their primarchs. The Night Lords are a special case, mainly due to the Legion being corrupted (in the traditional sense) to the extent they had mostly broken up into uncontrollable, self interested warbands by the end of the Great Crusade / start of the Horus Heresy era. So the death of Curze made little difference to them. The Alpha Legion are the other special case, due to their not having retreated into the warp with the other legions. They scattered themselves throughout the galaxy, and try to stay true to their objectives as of the end of the Heresy - which of course none of them actually remember (except their primarchs if they’re alive), due to 10,000 years of attrition, turnover of recruitment and self imposed exile. Their individual warbands do often group together for a common purpose, but what that is the reader rarely knows.

Bricky understates Nurgles other elements in his explanation. Nurgle is essentially what a classic Nature god would be if the world was much more focused on the "death" in death and rebirth. He represents the cycle of life, but stuck in the decay stage, and the only reason he's parked his dumpy there is because the never ending wars have a lot of dead bodies and disease to pass around. Nurgle is also the easiest chaos god to worship, because your very existence is pleasing to him. He doesn't want you to die before your time; Nurgle wants you to preserve in the face of horrific disease and overwhelming misery until it is your time to join the cycle. Thus, devout of Nurgle gain blessings that take away pain and sadness... at the cost of succumbing to the diseases that his blessings come in the form of. Hard to feel pain when your basically just a plague zombie.

One mistake Bricky has with Nurgle's positive side, is that Nurgle is actually a twisted God of life: a god of Life After Death. Nurgle is a happy god because his creations birth new life from the destruction they wrought. it's always twisted demonic life, but still life. Nurgle's rot is a fatal disease... but the victim is actually reborn as a demon, for instance.

9:38 Hey Ryan. Thanks for the explination about your progress in the writing industry. I didn't know people were scrutinising you about it, but it was interesting to hear. I normally don't like long-winded or off-topic ramblings at the start of videos, but in this case I have a personal interest in the information because I've attempted to write some fiction of my own before, but I never completed a story. I have many cool ideas for stories, but the process of writing a compelling narrative is a lot more nuanced than just having a cool blurb. About five years ago a friend and I participated in the NaNoWriMo competition, which was motivating, but I only got about a chapter written. I'd like to watch more videos about your process and things that help you organise your thoughts and stay focused. 30:12 Usually a chapter that looses its primarch will just transfer all the leadership responsibilities to an elected chapter master. Some chapters do this more democratically than others. Some chapters may also have psykers that claim to be sensitive to the will of their deceased primarch in the warp. Some primarchs are also presumed dead, then later come back from being trapped in the warp or something. The primarch of the chapter I play as, Ferrus Manus of the Iron Hands, died during the Horus Heresy, so his chapter has been without a primarch for 10,000yrs, but in his absence the chapter has organised itself pretty well. They have a council made up of representatives from each company, and elect a chapter master to serve in times of need. Otherwise their chapters operate almost independantly. In another example, the Blood Angels are sometimes aided by an angel-winged marine clad in golden armour that materialises out of nowhere to help them and then disappears. They call this warp-entity The Sanquinor, and they believe it to be their dead primarch coming back from the warp to aid his chapter in their times of greatest need, although his identity cannot be confirmed because he doesn't talk and wears a helmet.

If you want something that will not at-all prepare you for the brutality and general depressing vibe of a lot of 40K stories, you want "The Infinite and The Divine", which is functionally a Spy vs Spy book between two immortal robot skeletons. Something more conventionally 40K, and generally used as the introduction, is the 'Ciaphas Cain' series - though more specifically "Ciaphas Cain - The Hero of the Imperium." omnibus. If you do get into the books... be careful. The older books, to be specific anything by Ian Watson, is borderline fetishistic in the unpleasant way. Slaanesh having BDSM vibes is one thing - but Ian Watson is just something else.

And the Eye of Isha shall dim, closing for eternity Such a gentle goddess cannot witness such atrocities as they shall wreak. The soulless ones shall be the harbingers of the dark fate Then shall come the living dead, the progeny Then the thirsting ones, The forever damned And the galaxy shall run red as the blood of Eldanesh, The Vaul-moon shall bring forth the Dragon The Master of Death will drink deep from Isha's Eye That Which Lies Outside will be drawn to the harvest And the Jackal-God shall turn brother against brother. So, the Emperor destroyed Lorgar's homeworld and pissed him off as he did so. Without a deity to worship, Lorgar turned to the Chaos Gods as unlike the Emperor, Chaos wanted to be worshipped. I think a thing that Bricky tends to gloss over, because he's a good Imperial boy, is that Chaos is... sort of the right choice. It may be pretty rare, but if you follow Chaos and are careful about it, you become an immortal cosmic being. Sure, it's one out of a trillion (not an accurate number) odds, and if you follow one of the gods you experience some ego-death, but you can absolutely ascend to your own conceptual minor godhood by following Chaos. Chaos rules its own reality, and it's the destination for basically all living creatures to end up there and become food for something native to that reality. It makes a certain amount of sense to skip all that and be the predator instead of the prey.

My favorite theory on why the chaos gods are presented as demonic super evils is the death spiral theory. With the shitty way the 40k galaxy is, and the way the warp/gods feed on emotions, it has passed a event horizon in a negative spiral. So the gods and the galaxy are represented the way they are becouse of all the hate, war etc and the warp countinous the push the negative spiral down becoming self feeding.

Bricky kind of glosses over the orks terrifying nature, and why they're so friggin pernicious as a species. They're a self propagating fungal ecosystem. Every ork is a fungus based organism that carries it's entire species DNA in it's body. When an ork expels basically any amount of mass, part of that mass is fungal spores that take root in almost any environment and begin the orkoid lifecycle from scratch. If your planet never had orks on it before, and a single ork starts farting and burping, or is killed, all the mass it expels spreads basic ork spores. Those spores grow innocuous mushrooms initially, in a few days those ork mushroom fields start producing minor greenskin species like squigs, snotlings, and gretchin. After growing enough mass, they start birthing Orks directly form the ground. As the orks proliferate, latent genetic coding in their bodies begins to awaken as needed by their society. In a matter of weeks they go from literally born yesterday primitive hunter-gatherers, to having doctors, mechanics, gunsmiths, and theoretical(as in "what's this button do?") physicists who are all born with intuitive knowledge of their crafts, all of them pursuing these jobs for the sole purpose of enhancing their tribes ability to start and fight wars with whoever they meet. Their ability also scales to match and exceed local enemies. If a tribe that spent a century fighting a long grueling war with an enemy that uses spears and swords suddenly has to contend with enemies with lasguns and tanks, the ork tribe will basically intuitively unlock knowledge of tanks and equivalent firearms to contest their new foes. The only way to dislodge them from a world is to burn the very ground they breathe on to ash in order to keep the spores from surviving to birth the next generation of hooping violent shitheads.

If they lose, it’s also because of some wacky shenanigans that also make no sense because he tries to charge at my tanks with a bunch of bikes and wagons but rolled a bunch of ones to most of them blew up. They worked with the C'tan long after the death of the Old Ones and it wasn't until their power grew suffcient that they decided to capture and harness the C'tan as weapons. It is even hinted at that the Silent King knew of the Tyranids and that much of his preparation was to be ready for their invasion.

Dude, @18:25 NO, just no. This game universe existed for at least 10 years before Game of Thrones was written. Please correct me on the exact timeline, however I do know that WH40k existed before GoT.

I highly recommend Warrior Tier's Warhammer videos, including the amazing radioplay Warhammer 1987 - The Dark Brotherhood. These videos are more like miniature works of fiction than lore explanation videos. But they pack quite a punch and are highly enjoyable. --I'm not sure what caused the rift between the Craft universes and Games Workshop. Warcraft was always intended to represent Warhammer and Starcraft to represent Warhammer 40k, but something happened to cause GW to pull out of the deal.
