Written by folk legend James Taylor and released in 2015, this song tells the remarks of an American soldier and their campaign in Afghanistan.
We have lost 20 years, 2,000,000,000,000 dollars, and 4,096 hopeful Americans... and what was it all worth?

I see some Russians and Americans asking about the scarcity of American-Afghan war songs, despite the number of Soviet-Afghan war songs. I am not a veteran of either war, but if I had to guess it is that: A) A lot more troops were lost by the Soviets in there war, and they also deployed more men to the war than we did. B) The Red Army was full of drafted conscripts, just as the US Army had in Vietnam (You see a lot more American war songs about Vietnam). In both cases, the songs were a form of protests against being in the war. The draft was ended in America before our turn in Afghanistan, so anyone in the military was there voluntarily, at least to a degree, so there was little need for protests when they had volunteered to do it.

I think a lot of it is that Afghanistan kind of didn't have that much of an identity as a war if that makes sense. The gulf war, the war in afghanistan, the war in iraq, etc all kind of blend into and lead into each other. They are less distinct wars, and more one large war with different phases, and it's been going on so long that it's ground down multiple generations of soldiers. The war has gone on so long that it's almost become a mundane fact of life rather than a tragedy to many people. There are people who are in their twenties and thirties and have lived their entire lives not knowing a world without war. It's hard to be passionately angry about something like that when you're just so... tired. Combine that with the fact that post 9/11 it was basically sacrilegious to criticize the actions of the military and the military industrial complex, and you have an environment where people are simultaneously too tired to care or so cultishly on board that it's basically impossible to have the circumstances for these types of songs. If you notice, it's not just songs about this war, but protest songs in general. Most major political movements in the United States distinctly lack a musical identity in many cases, and I think part of it is just that the American people have lost their Spirit of resistance. We've been fighting so long that we just don't want to fight anymore, and the people who are still willing to fight are so in the weeds that they're just worried about maintaining awareness let alone actual action.

Kinda makes me feel really bad for afghans in general; USSR basically destroyed Afghanistan. Have you seen the list of casualties of Afghan civilians? It was a very harsh war, and later came the USA; these people have no luck... cannot help but feel bad for them.

I watched a little girl fall into a pretty steep ditch. She was walking to her first day of school. We stopped what we were doing and helped her to her feet. She was in tears because her dress got ripped and now she couldnt go to school. I watched one of the hardest men I ever known put a big r shirt on her and pull out a needle and thread. Fixed that dress on the side of a dusty road. Another hard as rock man braided her hair. She went to school. In the big picture this story means nothing. But I'm sure it mattered to her. Those hard men are dead now. They didnt die for nothing. We didnt fight for nothing. We didnt lose

The americans were here because we were attacked personally. So less music was produced in protest of the war. That is the reason there is less music about the war. But, the Vietnam war was for no reason. (Or a claim that was made up as an excuse) So there were MANY songs about the war. But, many people's stance on this war was "We need to be there". But this song hits me hard as my family was over there and they relate to this song

By the time our turn in Afghanistan came about, the draft was no longer in force, and anyone in the military was there voluntarily in some capacity, so the need to create protest songs didn’t exist as much for those troops, seeing as they joined voluntarily and weren’t drafted.

The Greeks ruled over the land (Greco-Bactrian Kingdom) also for around 156 years. The Ghaznavids ruled over the land for over 200 years and had their capitol in Afghanistan. The land is able to be conquered, but it must be done through absolute bloodshed, which modern powers are not willing to do.

@@baneofbanes Yes, obviously. Since we have lived there for over 5,000+ years. But everyone on earth has moved around a bit over history. besides Christianity is the only unifying factor for Europe. Before they integrated into Arab culture, Syria once had a large documented Celtic population. North Africa was considered European until the rise of Islam. And most Afghani's I've met could pass as Eastern European. They even have high rates of blondism and redheads. They are definitely much closer related to Russians and other central Asian Caucasian peoples then Arabs.

Any heritage they share with Celts is also shared with literally every other indo-European group.

The soviet afghan war was much more intense. In the american afghan war the coalition took 2000 ish losses and the taliban 60k while in the soviet afghan war 250k mujahideen were killed to 15k soviets. Also during the soviet afghan war out of the 24k recorded villages in afghanistan over half were destroyed by the time of the soviet withdrawal. Estimated say 9-13% of afghanistan's population was killed in the soviet afghan war. It was a lot bloodier and intense than the 20 years we spent there.
