Interesting. I never looked at FC3's story from that perspective. For me it was always just "weird" how Jason became a badass out of nowhere and changed his mind about killing so quickly.

You put into words what I just _felt_ in Far Cry 3. Spot on observations and deconstruction. Thanks.

This is gaming's Apocalypse Now - a decent into madness from which there is no going back, but be trapped forever with the rest of lunatics either alive or dead. The only thing that brings it down for me was the second island (and story arch) that was probably included to let you play with your super powers (weapons, skills and of course the wing suit) a bit more, but it was such a slog story-wise and should have probably been a DLC.

What makes this more impactful is the fact that if you wished to save your friends, a descent into insanity would be inevitable, or in Vaas's case, repeating the same thing over and over expecting things to change.

I was really skeptical when I clicked on this video. There's a ton of people trying to make content on youtube, with varying levels of quality and success, but this was a really interesting and well-made video. Keep it up! I'm really looking forward to more of your videos.

Far Cry 3 is the first shooter that got the rpg aspect of starting with nothing and getting strong, really strong... so strong that you start 2 hitting bosses. Far Cry 3 feels like that. And I like that Jason Brody also becomes like that along with us. Also, Ajay Ghale's combat powress is explained, he is a crimial turned military turned special forces. He also got medals and stuff, I think FarCry 4 isn't about Ajay Ghale or Pagan Min, its more about the people and the world they inhabit. From the sentence I read on FC4 I sense a negative bias on your part, or you might be looking at it the wrong way.

Ah is that right? Fair enough been a while since I played it. No negative bias intended, just prefer Far Cry 3.

Cagey Videos Understandable. Great channel, watched almost all your videos. Really liking em due to their less pandering nature.

Far Cry 3 was good...and then Ubisoft happened and made 2 more games that are exactly the same but with less substance. When something feels milked its less enjoyable too.

In the video description you ask for games with similar arcs as Far Cry 3, i.e. an average joe getting stuck in a violent situation and gradually change to embrace the violence until they can no longer return to how they were before. I cannot think of anyone sadly. The closest is probably Iji, but A: the "enjoy killing" arc is optional, and dependent on player behaviour. B: The final climax of the game still involves Iji fighting to minimize further deaths. How her psyche would be post climax is not really touched upon by the game.

I am mixed on thos game's story(mainly because the ending sucks) but you did a good job at explaining what's good about the story.

I disagree. I think I saw a video somewhere from the story writer of this game that the era of the time played a significant role in the story. That being in 2008 after the financial crash where young 20 year olds were out of work and searching for meaning. Which reflected in this story that is more about soul searching and self reflection more than anything. A deep dive into the SELF

Great stuff. I remember playing it and feeling like it was acting a bit high and mighty, and assumptive about my feelings as a player. Just as in Dishonored 2, actually - Emily is being incredibly brooding and grim-dark in an attempt to guess at how I might be feeling (I'm killing almost everyone because it's pretty fun combat!). You look at a lamp and she says "I'd love to gut Delilah... with that lamp", but in my head, the soundtrack is "girls just wanna have fun". In farcry 3, the opposite was true. Any time I was in an on rails section, I was just thinking "fuck, i hate on-rails bits". Meanwhile, the character was shouting "HAHA THIS IS AWESOME, I AM HAVING FUN!! EVEN THOUGH IT'S IN BAD TASTE!! HAHA!" It's very hard to countenance the mood and choices of a player with the tone of a game. I kind of think you shouldn't unless it's an explicit choice on the part of the player. Let the character be themselves. Let the player be themselves. Let suspension of disbelief heal that rift. Don't try to tell the player how they ought to feel. Instead, give them the means to express how they feel. (Just as long as that expression involves weapons and killings because it's not really a game if it doesn't have those things.)

I think different people enjoy different approaches to this topic since every approache has different advantages and disadvantages. I think there is space for games which let the player be decide who the character is and games where the protagonist has his own character.

On the surface, Far Cry 3 is a bad game. But actually it's a deconstruction of a bad game!
