I've read and reviewed several articles and videos that state you MUST have INSULATION between the cage (garbage can in this case) and the item being protected. The insulation should be non-conductive, such as cotton clothing, layers of paper, or cardboard. You can also opt to keep the radio (or other items) in the packaging it came in, which is usually enough to stop any conduction from reaching it from the walls of the garbage can.

At 500Mhz (good representaive freq for EMP) the steel can is barely effective (-10dB). However, if you seal the lid AND and seams with aluminum tape then you will get close to -50dB effect. Military spec levels are around -90dB. SO, if you used a sealed can AND you placed the electronics in a metallized sealed bag you would have an effective system. Now any protection is better than none. But this video is a bit misleading and incomplete.

@crazysquirrel9425 Жыл бұрын
FYI that can is grounded! It is sitting on concrete which has ground potential. It is not necessary to insulate the inside of the lid unless you have things that can touch it. For better results, foil tape the inside and outside of the handles as well as the lid to the can side. And both inside and outside the can seam (seam that goes from top to bottom) as well as the bottom seam of the trash can. All it takes is a tiny opening to destroy what is inside. That can will not protect against a ground zero style of EMP (close airburst). It can help if you are farther away. Inverse square formula. Advantage of the metal trash can is that it can protect against EMP DC induced induction.
@Thepitz200012 жыл бұрын

You're right and perhaps my analogy was distracting. The point I was trying to make was about the difference in shielding the higher energy waves. Any rays that can make it through the can would also fry whatever is on the inside by inducing a similar voltage there. You would have a very small amount of energy drop on the can but the radio inside is toast in an EMP blast. Shielding is the main concern in an EMP or solar flare. Use LOTS of concrete, dirt, water, or lead for shielding.
@8260097 Жыл бұрын

Very interesting video and I will probably try it out, but I have two questions: 1) At 1:24 you said to stick an FM radio in the can. Can it be shortwave, or any other frequency of receiver? 2) At 1:49 you said that after covering the can, all you could hear was static. I truly don't know, but was under the impression that static was caused by random, background electromagnetic energy being picked up on an antenna. Wouldn't a good block of all EM energy result in no sound at all? Thank you.

Sheet metal will make a good Faraday cage. Unfortunately they will not protect against a magnetic impulse that induces circuit killing current induction. Take a strong magnet and place it against the outside of the sheet metal and use a metal screw driver against it on the inside. If you feel magnetic pull then it will not shield against a Electromagnetic inducing current into your devices you want to be protected. A Faraday cage will shield against electrostatic field but not necessarily against magnetic inductions. Look up a material called Mu-Metal (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mu-metal). You need magnetic shielding not static shielding. And for those of you that take issue with this information have you proved these electrostatic types of shielding will protect against Electro-"Magnetic"- Pulses? Just try a strong magnet as I detail. I am a trained professional since 1972 and I know the difference between Electromagnetic and Electrostatic fields. Garbage cans are just good for garbage and that is what you will have in them after a strong EMP.

Both need extremely tight seals so no frequency gets thru any gaps. Moving on. Just remember. THIS WILL NOT WORK!

Jim, How do you get a grounded and non-grounded cage? What do you use?
@papatrucker28728 жыл бұрын
+Linda Allen Ok Linda start with a grounded cage. It needs to be a highly conductive metal like copper or sliver. Copper is way cheaper. Use a thick gauge copper sheet. The lid must be very tight fitting all the way around. Then you need at least 1/4" think non conductive liner on all sides including the lid thicker the better. Solder a thick copper wire from the lid to the body of the cage. Then solder thick copper wire to the body of the cage and run that outside to a copper ground rod that's put at least 18" in the ground. Set the cage on wood or concrete. Bam. Grounded cage done.
@papatrucker28728 жыл бұрын
+Linda Allen Unfortunately there is no easy way out for a good faraday cage. Good quality commercial ones are for the rich only & good home built ones are labor intensive. I prefer wooden ones as you can set them on the ground, on dirt, concrete or even on a shelf or work bench and your protected. Even from a nuclear emp that goes off directly over head. Only down side to wooden ones are weight when you make them on larger scales. Need a forklift to move them when full. LMFAO! I need to find the links on wooden emp protection that was done and post it. Testing shows the trash can faraday cage (which is what I use) if almost worthless if you don't tape and seal the lid with aluminum duct tape. People need to understand emp flows a bit like water and can get into very tiny gaps.

I was wondering, from the several articles I've read in the past about faraday cage building, wouldn't it be best to attach a grounding cable to the can (removeable of course) that would then attach to a grounding rod of about 3 foot in length? The radio test is a good general test, but a burst of high frequency waves would behave a bit differently, as propostioned by some. It may be worth the few extra bucks.

Nice Idea, Now I have a more structurally sound Faraday cage for my larger items. I already used old Microwaves for smaller electronic devices, but always wanted something for the larger items.

I filled my new barrel/ can half way full with water and beads of water were seeping from the bottom seams. A couple tubes of liquid steel around seams and lifting handles…….we good.

@Gaudapada108 I use it so the items inside don't get dented up as I'm moving things around. Also some people are concerned about their items touching the metal so it helps them see how they can easily protect against that.

Strictly speaking, the problem with using corrugated cardboard as the insulator is that if it gets wet it doesn't insulate. Coroplast might be a better option.

@YiuTeub 100% correct. Thanks for reading the comments and commenting.

Do I need to have the inner lid fully covered by cardboard? Or just have a tight seal between the lid and the can?

As for protecting cars, alternator diodes are vulnerable. Either get a pre-'98.5 Cummins with a manual shift, or EMP-proof spare alternators, ignition modules, etc.

Did you ever share your thoughts about the short wave radio? I don't seam to be able to find it,and where your got it? Thanks I like your videos.....

I am going to get one at Wal Mart tomorrow but I will solder the handle on the lid to seal off the small gap you can see. I'll store it in my Van, almost a metal box in itself. I got the metal tape already too.

I did the test with my FM radio and it worked just like yours did. However, when I placed my cell phone in the can it was still able to receive a phone call. What are your thoughts?

If you put electronic in and seal the cage should you recharge the batteries in devices or keep the cage sealed for years?

We just made this following your instructions and it isn't working. We even put the phone in a nesting bag, then placed it in the can. It still rings loud and clear. What did we do wrong?

The cardboard is for padding. No insulation is needed. The EMP travels around the skin of the container. It doesn't go through to the inside of the skin.

Excellent dude, it solves some questions about if we must ground or not and must isolate the metals with external covers of different materials.

FM falls in the same wave length as an EMP burst. That is why I tested on FM.

@LifeOWrylee Sony ICF-SW7600GR AM/FM Shortwave World Band Receiver with Single Side Band Reception, plus External Plug-in Antenna. I bought it on Amazon. You can read reviews there too.

@screavics I tested it. It didn't seem to work at all. I tested several different types of electrostatic bags with the same unacceptable results.
@LDSPrepper12 жыл бұрын
Correct. No insulation is needed because the EMP stays on the outside skin of the can.To better understand please review the information and links in the description box below the video.

@pugamusmaximus It will work if you have metal on metal connections all the way around. Test it like I did in my video.
