Toby correcting her nosy little nonsense of trying to take his treat is just the sweetest and funniest thing ever! Reminds me of my Doris when she used to correct our little Ruben when he first came home. She was always so proper in showing him not to steal from others by giving him a nip or pushing him down just as Toby did Abby. I love watching dogs train each other.

She's adorable! small tip - try not to repeat the command, otherwise she will just be waiting until she thinks she's waited long enough. It works better to use a combo of Stay and a release command so she doesn't question *when* the stay is over, if that makes sense.
@ninjadogs3389
@ninjadogs3389 2 жыл бұрын
Another good thing to watch out for is to always go back to the dog before giving the treat. I find stay is most useful for controlling a dog over long distances and its easier to do that if the dog thinks stay can only be released if the handler is next too them. That way for example if a dog gets across a street you can tell them stay and they wont try and cross the street again until the handler is by the dog to lead it back across the street.

You always repeat the command but, you pause for 2 seconds to 3 seconds before repeating the command again. So they take note what you are trying to tell them. Morgan finds eggs everywhere, even out in the field. He finds frozen eggs that have been abandoned. I think it's more a case of, wherever the bird is when the egg is ready, there it is, plop...
@bormz7191
@bormz7191 2 жыл бұрын
@@littlemrpinkness295 It's a silly thing to debate but I'll bite. Just because not every duck lays their eggs in Toby's house, doesn't mean they just plop out eggs willy nilly. Ducks always look for a safe, dry, spot to lay their eggs, generally where they are somewhat hidden yet close to their flock. That's why he often finds them in brush or long grass when the ducks are out and about during the day. Not every duck is as cautious as every other though, and Toby's presence on the farm extends beyond his little abode,. That said, I can tell you for a fact, that duck knows the farm's vigilant protector lives in that house and chose that spot specifically because it feels extra safe there. Just because other ducks feel comfortable laying in other places around the farm, doesn't make that untrue.

I 2nd that completely, Morgans intelligence shows in behavior of other animals, progress, how to and not to do things etc, I highly doubt I would be able to adabt and learn so much in such small time and at the same time work a full time job with other shit. Currently saving money to buy a house to raise animals in Sweden and it will be my life project where I will live and die, but I doubt I will be able to live off of it, but to me its not about that but living with nature and farmlife because I find it peaceful. Some people might find chickens, geese, ducks, cows, pigs, cats and dogs to be stressful, but personally I find it liberating and a big calm to the soul to live with animals. Unfortunately thanks to the Europe War of Russia, Belarus and Ukraine house pricing and loans has become a disaster together with the increase in cost for every single thing in existance in Europe, like a 25% increase in cost on everything, so my goals has been postponed for most likely 6-8 years.

@@kakap0788 Same here. I've been following the housing market very closely since I was pre-approved for a loan and the houses are bought up instantly with cash, 20% over asking price (over here in the states anyway). I simply cannot compete. Morgan got in at just the right time. I'm sure it's different circumstances between the two of us as we're an ocean apart and have different influences on our lives due to that, but I am in the same boat as you and feel very frustrated about it all. I just want a nice piece of land to raise some small animals on, have a garden, and be able to do whatever my mind finds interesting to hone or learn new skills. I wish the best for you. I was thinking the same thing. It’s just like with a child, honestly. Let them know you mean it the FIRST time you say it, not the fifth. With my kids (doesn’t work so well with dogs, hehe), I would tell them what I wanted or needed them to do, and if they didn’t start moving, I would say “one!”, and they hustled into action. Had a person ask me how I got them to respond so quickly and I explained that rather than slowly counting to 5 to get a response, if I got to 2 they had already incurred consequences. And there also wasn’t much time after saying 1 before 2 followed, either. Same principle with dogs, say it once and let them know you mean it the FIRST time you say it.

I used a flexi-leash for training those with gentle tugs to get the point across. Excellent results! I also prefer a ‘kissing’ sound over a clicker and relate it to food/treats with praise. Great job with the training Morgan! Abby has come so far already. I would caution against saying "sit" or "stay" multiple times in fast repetition as it is setting a precedent. Try saying it one time and let it sink in. When constantly repeating yourself, she will start thinking "sit sit sit sit" or "stay stay stay stay" is the command, instead of just simply "sit" or "stay"

The puppy is wonderful and does seem very eager to please. Have you considered the canine dynamics when she's in heat and Toby is going to be very distracted by that and different stronger instincts take over? I lived with collies and when one of them went in heat, our male collie went nuts. He couldn't be in the same room any of us. He was crazy overwhelmed and went after anything that moved. He was a completly different dog. We didn't recognize his personality. It was gone and something else was there in place. Just something for you to look forward to. There's going to be different instincts and dynamics in your very reliable, well mannered boy. But, nevertheless, an exciting time raising the new puppy.

I love your content. Toby turned out great so it might not matter. I started dog training and a few things I've learned from my classes: Wait at least 5 seconds to repeat a que, without moving. If you move toward her, or repeat she learns she doesn't have to respond until you do those things. They make interesting associations that can overshadow voices. Try to ignore scared behavior. A comforting voice is associated with what they are doing in that moment, they can think scared is good. When she goes to investigate or gives you attention you can environment. With stay, say it once, and return to her with the treat. This teaches her what you want, without having to repeat it constantly. You can add a word to release her, or just keep extending the duration to about the same amount. You can mix some food in with the treats, and vary the amount. If it's something she's super interested in, give her a few pieces of treats and food. Idk how much you wanna do this with wanting them to be engaged in the envoirnment. A 10ft leash, tied around your waist might help, but she's doing great so probably not needed.

When Abby sits, she sometimes does a "sloppy sit" with her legs tilted to one side. As a floppy puppy that's common, but if the habit continues it can lead to problems later on (arthritis etc). So when you reward a sit/sit-stay, make sure she's sitting properly, to condition those muscles keeping her straight 👍

@Always Watching have you done any hip x-rays? Since she doesn't weigh as much as a big dog, hip/knee problems won't affect her as much, purely because of the weight. Never too late to start training though 🙂
@goldengryphon
@goldengryphon 2 жыл бұрын
That feels rather chicken and egg-ish to me. I wasn't aware that they had proven sloppy sits were a contributing factor to hip and back leg joint problems. I had thought they were a good indicator, much like running sideways, but not a cause. Is there any site with that information so I can update myself?
@feliciatingsborg1924
@feliciatingsborg1924 2 жыл бұрын
@@goldengryphon it is a bit like the chicken and the egg. But what you practice you get good at. So practicing those muscles keeping the legs/hips stable can compensate for some weaknesses they're born with. The more serious ones you can't avoid with just training, but you can slow them down.
@goldengryphon
@goldengryphon 2 жыл бұрын
@@feliciatingsborg1924 Okay. Where did you get your information? Or is this based on your experience of being a professional dog trainer for a number of years? A veterinarian dealing with this sort of problem in your practice? Or information in a book/study/paper/Breeder's association or some other source? Yes, it would make sense that this sort of muscle development in exercise would make a difference in how an individual animal responds and that one animal would be able to cope better for longer depending on the type of hip malformation, individual animal's pain management, or potential certifications. That would also depend on the extent of hip malformation. There are some truly awful hip malformations where any amount of exercise wouldn't help. Having dealt with such things while assisting in rescue groups and while having to watch my own dogs go through various stages of hip dysplasia, I am curious as to where you get your information. If this is something that is well-known in the "dog world", and it might be, this should be spoken of more and more loudly. If this is based on your experience as a professional working with dogs and your experience in working with a large number of dogs through some organization, you should write up your findings, if you haven't already, and make sure they are spread far and wide. I would really like to read the information in the study or get more specific information about your, or the study's authors, experiences in 'testing. There's a lot being left out of your blanket statement about why and how these exercises might work for @Always Watching's Malti-poo, and Abby.

Oh Morgan you just tickle me. I was giggling all through your staff meeting with the birds. I tried using a clicker with my pup but it was cumbersome, and I would often forget to grab it. So I just made a clicky noise with my mouth. It was much easier timing wise and just as, if not more effective. I used a different, lower noise as a warning alert, as she got older I rarely had to correct her with anything more than the warning noise. That's just what works for me though, I'm sure you will figure out what works for you and Abby. & Congrats!!📖🌈

Abby is a beautiful girl and she’s so easy to work with too! She catches on fast and has the desire to please you. The clicker is a great idea but If it were me I’d stick with just verbal rewards and a treat. You need to train both you and Toby to a clicker but voice rewards seem to work well, so I’d just stay with that.
