One advice concerning cats, it is to feed them close to their carrier. That way they associate the carrier with something they like (eating). So it helps a lot for getting them to the vet smoothly. For the rest, it's completely normal.

@@nicolecloutier4923 I do the same and my two will sleep in it and my big cat, Loki, eats treats in it. When it comes to getting them into the carrier to go to the vet, Loki won’t go anywhere near it even if I put treats in it and as soon as I close the gate he cries and tries to escape and sticks his front paws through the gate. Thor, my kitten, is easier to get into the carrier and I put a toy in with him but once the gate is closed he does the same as Loki and bites the gate too. When we get home from the vet and let whoever was in the carrier out and put it back in their room, they’ll quite happily go back in either together or alone. Thor likes to shut the gate over when Loki is inside and Loki is fine with it. I guess they know what is happening and pick up on my emotions when it’s vet visit time as the crying meows are heartbreaking.

its pretty common for cats to hiss at eachother when one comes back from a surgery. Surgeries leave a lot of weird unfamiliar chemical smells on the cat and other cats might struggle to fully recognize that cat and may hiss/swat at them for a day or two before they settle back down.

Little kittens are absolutely terrifying. They hiss and pop like firecrackers. I would rather deal with an adult feral cat, because at least I have a mental model of how they behave. Tiny little wild kittens will be okay and then POP HISS! It is really disconcerting and funny at the same time.

@@Tarawa1943 have you ever smelled an animal after it comes back from the vet? It smells like medicine/disinfectant. The first thing I ever did when getting the animals home would be to wash them so the smell went away. It’s really strong. Here in the UK, a charity called Cats Protection actually recommend keeping cats indoors for 3 months before allowing them outside to roam and this is because of the high number of cats that still ran away after being kept in for 3 weeks. So they did a study on the % of cats that run away after 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, 4 weeks etc etc and found that the % of cats that ran away was lowest when they are kept in for 3 months. Also female cats can come into heat as frequently as every month from mid Spring to early Autumn if not spayed. Most domestic cat females stop cycling over winter when not spayed.

A slow blink then look away is actually cat for I love you. Open your hand up all the way and spread your fingers wide and show your palm in your cats face. If they don’t back away then bunk them gently on the forehead with your palm. If they swing at you, you can swing at them but don’t actually hit them, that will just start a fight and you will not win that in their mind. Every day hold your cat down gently and pet them. They will probably resist at first but after a while they will come to enjoy it. Think of a mom saying to a sqirmy youngster hold still while I wash your face. I really like seeing the care and work you put into raising all of the animals on your farm. It may be standard practice of a good farmer to manage and care for barn cats this way, but I also know many people who have barn cats that are sexually intact and totally feral. Your farm just has a nice flow to it that is the result of all that care.

Fear not. Cats don't hold grudges. They recover from being angry with you from 5 to 30 minutes after you bring them home. I've had 5 cats, and none of them stayed angry once they were back in their own home. It is also not unusual for the stayed at home cat to hiss at the one who just returned from the vet because it's "got that stink on them." They just don't smell right. Since you told us during your Aug 4th farm meeting about Molly being spayed, she must be recovered by now, and allowed out on the farm. How are they doing NOW?

Ginny probably hisses at her mom because she doesn't recognize her. It would be way worse if you only took mom to the vet. Because of the surgery mom acts and smells differently. I had two cats who had been togethr since they were born but every time I had to take other one to the regular vet visit (because his chronic illness) the one who stayed home didn't know her brother at all when he came back. It could be even week of hissing before he smelled right again and they were back being best buddies. And he wasn't in any surgeries or getting meds that makes him act differently, just the smell of the vet. So to Ginny... The mom is kinda like a stranger right now and top of all that she's soon teenager cat, so she has to learn to defend herself.

Agree. I would spay her as soon as possible. That whole 3-4 month thing is not really true and is how kittens happen. As soon as they are 2lbs they can be spayed.

I came to say the same thing. I also had a cat go into heat at three months. It’s also important to spay before going into heat as even once can greatly increase their chances of cancer later on. Mammary cancer is the most common although it can contribute to other varieties of cancer. Waiting is only a benefit in large breed/heavier dogs, it isn’t so much of one for cats. As long as the kitten weighs at least two pounds (for anesthesia safety), vets can neuter a cat.

I did fostering for shelters in Pittsburgh and they altered kittens at 2 pounds with no adverse effects. The incision is smaller and they recover quickly. No cat or kitten is adopted out until it is fixed. The shelters are swamped with kittens and this is done to prevent the accidental pregnancies of more.

Young cats recognize other cats by SMELL, they hiss when they are exposed to smells they don't recognize. Molly was handled by humans that Ginny doesn't recognize so MOLLY's SCENT HAS CHANGED (temporary) Until her mom gets her normal scent back Ginny will INSTINCTIVELY react that way.

Hi Morgan, I've had cats for over 30 yrs & yes, whenever any cat goes to the vet, the other cats will notice they don't smell the same which is why they hiss. It will subside after a week or so once the cat smells normal to the other cat. You are smart that you didn't rush letting Molly out so she didn't get pregnant & I'm glad you have gotten her spayed.

Cats and dogs can smell and sense wounds and the vet smell. They tend to revert to survival of the fittest and can often attack until wound is fully healed. Happened many times with brother cats we owned. It is a revert to wild. Not all animals do that but most will. The really amazing animals are the ones who care for the sick and wounded both their species and different species than their own.

About animals not liking going to the vet: it's all about how they get treated at the vet's office. My last pet rabbit (who died a few years back) LOVED going to the vet. The first time we went, the gal doing "patient" intake cuddled him so much that he fell in love for life. From then on, my cue to him was "Do you want to go see Dana (that gal)?" I'd ask him in the morning when I fed him, leave his cage open, and set out his carrier (which was just a small bin with a folded bath towel. I didn't want him to feel like he was in a trap.) I'd go to get dressed and when I was ready he'd be sitting in the bin ready to go. Never a problem with that sweet little guy. Of course, the vet was his vacation spot, too. Whenever I had to go out of town, he went to the vet for boarding. This was an "exotic animal" vet, so in a place full of lizards and NOISY birds, he was the cute animal that everybody petted. Of course he liked going there: he got all the attention he could handle.

"I'm really not a cat guy," Morgan always says... this time while Ginny uses him as a climbing wall. Like everyone else has said, cats come back from the vet smelling funny (esp.. if they've had surgery), so any other cats will regard them with suspicion. Even their own offspring. Also like other people have said, you might want to re-think waiting another month or two to spay Ginny. Cats can have their first heat as young as 4 months of age - and you don't want Ginny to have been running free on the farm when her first heat happens. Lordy, no.

She is hissing at mom because mom smells differently! Leave them alone. They will work it out. One thing you seem to not understand yet about cats. They ARE NOT dogs and you don't train them like dogs! You keeping them locked up in a dark old barn without anything but a hour visit from you is just downright cruel for a cat! While they are normally solitary type creatures they still need interaction with people and animals and SUNSHINE! One of a cats greatest Joy's in life is just basking in the sunshine! Their body temperature runs much higher than ours and basking on the sun is good for their very being! Even if they are barn cats and not house cats. As far as the baby kitty as long as they are the proper weight they can be fixed! They can get pregnant as young as 4 months old and that's brutal on a kittens body. Get her fixed sooner than later please!
