You guys do great work!....very thorough. I have found two things that help a lot with old rusty stuff. 1) brush on bead liner. I use it in battery boxes and on foot tread/plates where traction and lack of rusty is more important than color. 2) Ospho phosphoric acid(the active ingredient in rust converters) made by Skyebrite and sold through hardware stores. Turns iron oxide into iron phosphate and can be used in place of primer.

what i love about the H and M series is you can fix the transmission without breaking the tractor in two and fix it in the field.i was sent on a service call on a M with 9spd turning 70HP with the M&W engine kit and crankshaft. it shattered the drive coupling and ruined the input shaft to the trans this wrecked a lot in the trans so my helper and i field repaired it in one day. it was in the middle of a very wet field with a 14ft disk on it. no way to move it . so we fixed it and drove it out of the field. the owner was so happy and we got a bonus that week. the shop labor rate was $12/hr per mechanic. those were the days

Mighty fine work! On a side note, I had my '49 M out and about today. It was shifting through the gears just fine now that I brazed up the worn bit on the foot of the shift lever. I could probably add a little more material to the side of the foot, but it's working well. My brother and I also machined up a new swivel rod and pin for the shift lever too. A good alternative to sand blasting and a whole lot less messy and that is a needle scaler. Very effective at crusty rust removal.
@whathobogrohknows4 жыл бұрын
LineshaftRestorations that would work but I don’t think squatch would use it because it might be hard not the castings it also will pound martial into the cast other than a sand blaster which is more like a wire wheel, in my opinion I would just use a wire wheel and brush.
@ralfie88014 жыл бұрын
Even though the area he blasted will be hidden by the battery box, i don’t think he’s looking for the finished profile the needle scaler would leave in the cast iron outside of that covered area. I’d prefer the “as cast” look myself, and sand blasting maintains that cast profile in the metal. So I’m thinking the sand blaster is the better option here.

That was an amazing, first hand explanation of how a manual transmission works. I'm sure this is just about as fundamental as they get, but even the most exotic manual transmissions probably use the same fundamentals. I always knew how they worked theoretically, and have seen the insides of a few, but this was unencumbered enough without synchronizers and everything, that you really have a good sense of how it works. And your diagnoses of the issues that are produced by wear in various places rang like a bell when you said your transmission howls in first through fourth, but is quiet in fifth gear. This is why an actual mechanic knows more about your stuff than you do just by hearing it. I wish you would figure out a way to give the same explanation somehow using the shifting mechanism with the cover off the gear box so we can see how the shifter works. Thank you.
@lwilton4 жыл бұрын
Yep, manual transmissions are pretty much all like that, just size and the number of countershafts vary. And synchronizers of course, but those are just little weak spring-operated clutches. Automatic transmissions are considerably different. No sliding gears, it is all done with brake bands and clutch packs. Basically all of the possible speeds are in mesh all the time, but one gear for each speed slips on the shaft. A clutch between the shaft and the gear is applied to shift into each gear. If you want to know some more, look up the "Precision Transmission" KZbin channel. They have lots of videos on transmission teardowns that will show all the parts.

Also not note, interesting that the ring and pinion is a bevel gear vs a hyphoid. Cheers!

Love the dolls head gasket joints, first class craftsmanship! Rookie question about those through hole top cover bolts (that you sealed the threads on): would one be courting disaster by making "sealing washers" out of, say, roofing membrane, to place under the flat washers, as a "belt and suspenders" backup to sealing the threads? I know, heretically unoriginal, but would it be a workable, functional mod? Or would one be risking forming a slow draining bathtub hellbent on contaminating your gear lube?

If I read the codes on the plate right, by memory, the M is a 1953. Battery under the seat and not an M-TA? Interesting. Is it factory live hydraulics?
@PeopleAlreadyDidThis4 жыл бұрын
Factory live hydraulics used a cubical hydraulic control unit under the fuel tank. Since it is about the size of the older under-tank battery box, they then created the battery-box seat support on the transmission. It’s a handy field spotting clue; if an H or M has the old seat support, with battery under the tank, you can be pretty sure it doesn’t have factory live hydraulics-assuming it’s still in original configuration. I’m rusty on the various “stage I, stage II” type nomenclatures, but as the Super H and Super M were modified in production, approaching their “number series” replacements, live hydraulics became available. “Supers” initially had only larger engine displacement and disc brakes (and a list of more minor durability upgrades), but still used the transmission-driven belly pump. Then came live hydraulics, with improved timing gears to handle the pump load. That was the end of development for the Super H, but after the Stage II Super M came the Super M-TA, which gained the torque amplifier and independent PTO. So, it went: •M, band brakes, C248 engine •Super M, disc brakes, C264 engine •Super M stage II, added live hydraulics, moved battery under seat •Super M-TA, added TA and independent PTO
