No need to go to the expense of doing a conversion just use a 50/50% diesel and sunflower oil mix, you can increase to 30% diesel and 70% oil in the summer months without any running issues but under winter running conditions a 50/50 mix works well, and you won't have problems starting. I have been using this mix for 12 years on a pajero 2.8 auto 1996 registration with no problems.

It is good to see someone who has good intuition about the technology they use. Most of the folks I've seen who have converted their old VW diesels to burn vegetable oil don't keep up with the maintenance on their vehicles and they break down a lot. A shame really since petroleum diesel is a nasty business and the alternative (vegetable and bio-diesel) is so much better for the environment.

A man in the 1970s did this to a Datsun pickup. You also get more miles out of a motor because it better lubed with oil fuel. The man in the 1970s tried to patent the idea, and the government wouldn't let him. He was getting like 50 mpg as well...

I’m in the Texas area and the government has been taping into this source and it’s been difficult to find a good source. I was just going to use a bucket, Rachel strap, and some fabric as my filter. I’ve used up about 10 gallons of WMO. I don’t run 100% but I run a max of 50-50 or 25-75. Diesel to oil ratio. But it’s a bit harder to get the WMO because auto stores won’t give it to you.

Well.. it's a great idea to do this if you can... especially if you need to save money... BUT beware: - 1) Most modern diesels ("common rail") are not suitable for (simple) conversion and a lot of diesel pumps are not suitable and WILL BE DAMAGED very quickly by Veg oil (Lucas pumps for example) Old Mercs and VW's do have suitable pumps though. Converted engines produce "brown soot" not "black soot" so show up cleaner on emissions tests! It is believed that brown soot is actually 30x more carcinogenic than the bad stuff. It's a lovely smell though.
@ExploringAlternatives9 жыл бұрын
+Michael Monk thanks for sharing this information with everyone so they know that some engines/models are more adaptable to veggie oil than others! I think it's very important to filter the oil before pumping it into the engine, and also to ensure that the diesel is switched on for the first and last couple of minutes driving.
@TommyboyGTP9 жыл бұрын
People have been doing this for a long time. The way he's doing it will work on older engines with mechanical injection, but to use it on newer vehicles with computer controls and multi-shot injectors, the fuel-oil needs to be purified and refined or it can cause big expensive problems. There are DIY kits out there for this. The newest diesel engines out there right now are rated to use B20 which is 20% biodiesel. Due to stricter laws, the tolerances and emission and computer systems of new diesels are very sensitive.

So will the engine burn the fats in the oil as long as its heated high enough? Or do they need to be cleaned out before its added to the tank in the truck box?
@jayh43559 жыл бұрын
From what I've read, you have to filter your Veggie oil meticulously before you put it into your tank. If there's any food particles, water, soap, or fats, then you'll eventually break your engine's fuel injectors.
@DavidS118 жыл бұрын
So let me get this right, he switches to diesel when coming to a stop because the engine can't keep the idle(as vegetable oil it doesn't burn as good as diesel). But this applied in a modern engine with electronics, where the idle is automatically adjusted to keep the engine running, shouldn't be needed. So if this is right, he could just adjusted the fuel pump to get a higher idle and avoid stalling when stopping, that way you don't need the diesel anymore
@johnrowley99768 жыл бұрын
he switches over to wvo so the car starts on diesel and runs till it gets warm enough to switch to wvo. the car will idle fine when it is warm

At the start you stated you can convert any diesel, as someone who has done a conversion and run the vehicle for a few years I disagree, I personally would not recommend anyone doing this to a modern common rail diesel motor and IMHO the best candidates are older, more basic engines with no electronics ie mechanical injection pumps and mechanical injectors. It’s also important to filter your oil well and engineer the system so as to avoid cross contamination of vegetable oil into your diesel, this can be done with independent supply and return valves and controlling them so vegetable oil doesn’t ever return to the diesel tank, having some diesel in your veg oil is fine but not the other way.

I been driving diesel autos since 1977! Right now I drive a 1982 MB 300 SD turbo diesel! The problem is the mechanical fuel injectors need the lubrication from the fuel, veggie oil does not do it! Now with the modern common rail injection systems on the newer cars and trucks no way! New injectors are not cheap, then you have other issues! The Idea that its well free, it's really not, unless you consider your time and effort worthless! I do not! I while ago I was looking a 300 D MB from Southern California, the car was in damn near showroom shape, and less that 80K on it , a 1981 car, converted to veggie oil, I told him that I would buy the car, for 1/3 the asking price, because I would have to replace all the injectors, fuel lines, and the injector pump will have to be taking out, no small job and gone thru and rebuilt! This pumps on MB are as bulletproof as you can get, then run a lot of diesel purge thru it, remove the tank and clean it out! I shake my head every time I see this sort of stuff! The 617 engine is a very good engine, but its designed to run on diesel fuel, not just crap that you can get it to burn, it will do it with a lot of work and headaches! That guy is not saving a dime on his fuel costs, it just goes to other places, mile for mile it's cost him more!
@jamesflores94567 жыл бұрын
your wrong the only way to go through an ip or injectors are 1. inadequate filtering (particles arnt good... doesnt take a genious) 2. inadequate per-heating (160 deg. f flows oil similarly to diesel oil is much thicker) 3. if your oil doesnt lubricate the pump (a can of diesel kleen will solve that) long story short the ones who do it right dont experience problems but thoes who dont give it a bad name P.S 160 degrees F. means the oil is that hot in the injecton pump/injector lines/fuel line coming in the injection pump id insulate the lines for the last one

What I'm saying is: you can't convert a bus to an RV as easily as this. I've looked into it. It's considered an artisanal car and nedds a ton of regulation plus SAAQ inspection. My point is, he's lucky BC is so chill about it (or he got it licenced before the hammer came down on regulations...). Once it's converted, you're golden. You could take an old RV and do that and no one would know... because logic... -_-
