I'm 65 now, but in 1976 my husband, who has since passed, and I homesteaded our 40 acres. We built our road and house. We dug two water wells, built two ponds. We also milled our trees. We had cattle and horses. It was a good life. Now I still live here and the property is beautiful. We did 90% of the work ourselves and raised two boys. You are doing a great job!

Just something to think about... I noticed when you finished cutting your first tree that your chain was kind of hanging down from the bar, it also took you a bit to make your cuts. Its a good idea to keep your chain on your saw taught. Adjust it to the point that you can pull it down from the bottom and is snaps back up and you can still move it by hand. Running the chain lose increases the wear on your bar and also puts you at risk as the chain will run off the bar. Its important to keep your chain sharp. I noticed when you were cutting that you had the throttle almost wide open but you were taking a little bit of time to make your cut. When you chain is sharp, the tailing from the cut will come out in nice size slivers . When your chain is dull, the tailing from cut will come out almost like a dust. Using a dull chain increases the risk of kick back and wear and tear on your engine... Just some advice.

In 1988 we bought 10 acres of woods. I spent the summer and early fall building a road into it. I posted several No Trespassing signs around the perimeter. Opening day of deer bowhunting season... I drive out right after sunup. My road is blocked by a car parked between two trees with No Trespassing signs on them. I slip on my orange hat and walk down the road a piece... at the bottom of a huge oak tree sits a guy dressed in camo facing away from me. I holler at him and ask what are you doing here. He explains that he is hunting deer. I tell him this is private property and you are trespassing. I ask, didn’t you see the signs. He explains that he is not a trespasser because he has permission from the owner to hunt. (I bought the land from the bank and know that they have owned it for three years.) I tell him that the highway patrol station is one mile away... that I have written down his license tag number and he had better get the owner out here by the time I come back with the highway patrol (long before cell phones) or they’ll be knocking at his door by the time he gets home. He flips me off and runs to his car.... but he can’t back out and the road isn’t finished... it ends in a blackberry bramble patch with a huge stump hidden on the other side. He decides to go for it... Well, I don’t know what the towing charges were for his car... but after he walked a mile to call the wrecker, had to wait an hour for them to show up and when they pulled it out it had the whole right front caved in to the dashboard... I decided not to turn him in for Trespassing. I considered it his lucky day!!!

I saw you cutting trees, and thought you might appreciate this. It was in a video, there was a guy notching trees, ;leaving them standing and going on to the next tree in line and notching them as well. He was cutting a logging access road through a dense forest. He got to the end of the day, pointed his camera on a tripod at the tree line. Cut the last tree, it fell on the next, and next, until he had trees falling clear to the top of the next hill. I could not help but laugh at how he cut and dropped that many trees all at once. I know you don't have that same opportunity, but you and I both like to see work done as easily as possible. That was a good one. I have no idea how many trees he felled, but he only had to do a final cut on one.

If your going to be curing those oaks for your mill then you need to decide where your mill is going to be & set up a metal rack to put those trees on to get get them off the ground. My Step Dad & my brother had a small mill & he had worked worked for the saw mill in our county in Northern Sierra's CA Tuolumne Co. With your winter weather coming up, you don't want your trees laying on the ground, your trees will start rotting if you do. Rack your trees off the ground & tarp them so they won't get wet so they'll dry age well. Like you do for firewood. The dryer the wood the better you can mill it. It'll make your cutting go smother when you mill your trees. Wet & green wood is a pain to mill. If you've got dead trees around your property cut them down first & color tag them for the color you want for firewood & use another color for your milling trees because you can't use dead trees for milling. You should build your woodshed 1st so you'll already have it ready for your firewood to season.

After your done using it, you can use the cargo container for storage, covert it for animal housing or simple sell it and get some of your money back. We ended up keeping our container and use it for storage. The containers are that much money....around $3k to $5k, just depends on the size.

Hey Dutch, First of all No Trespassing means No Trespassing and they know that someone is out there and they still are going on your property. String trip wire's or sensor's that detect a vehicle entering your property that sends a signal to a device attached to a shotgun covered with a tarp and tree branches to keep dry and undetected. When activated it will pull the trigger on the shotgun shooting it off. Have it pointed to the ground away from the trespassers so no one will get shot. You can even get blanks to shoot instead of live ammo.

Sold by Amazon. Product is by Rocketek, DC 500m, remote switch. It was very easy for me to hook up into the system. Yet even if I think someone is out there I can turn it on. The light sensor one did not last. Yet I do not need 24/7 light on so yes they solar yeard lights are amazing.
