I set way better with slow hands because it allows me to control the ball. I kinda relax my wrists when the ball lands and I stiffen them for the pushback. How do you do fast hands without giving the impression of hitting the ball ?

was wondering if more could be done on the subject. im currently playing setter and have thought about issues as such but was never able to really get what i could change to improve , but the video gave me a direction in which i can work towards,but im having issues making these improvements, so for example whenever im trying to do the fast hands the ball might get some random spin on it or probably not even passing through my mark, was wondering if some more tips could be given. thanks

Spin might indicate one hand is going faster or slower thsn the other

Yeah spin means that one hand is hitting the ball faster than the other think abt still bringing it in without bending your elbows

It is also normal that when you attempt to speed up your hands there will be some inconsistency at first. Completely normal. Trust the reps, put in the work, and then it will become clear where things are breaking down.

+Nickftw27 Interesting point of view but let me challenge you here. If as a setter you change it up between fast and slow hands, what do you do with the timing of the middle attacker and to a lesser extent, with the timing of your outside hitters on quick sets? How will they know how fast your hands will be?
@LunnarisLP
@LunnarisLP 6 жыл бұрын
I think it's pretty hard to do fast hands, if you can't do slow hands. It's like hitting a quick. You really have to be able to hit to do that one in the first place. Or a back attack or anything at that. I don't think you should really change it just within the game for no reason without your team knowing though. Maybe for a back attack or something, idk..

I always vow to achieve fast hands, knowing the reasoning behind, but it's not as easy to be consistent, not to mention to trajectory's angles play a role -- meaning if you can't get to the ball at the perfect position, your setting angle (for me) flattens a little (rainbow when you want high), which means the ball travels a bit too fast with fast hands. Any ideas to improve on that? Thanks a lot.
@moBacon
@moBacon 7 жыл бұрын
cool demonstration. took me a second to note the difference, but at their level it's more obvious. definitely something i've seen before, but never put thought to. my hands are so atrocious, i'd be happy to have any level of consistency tho.

tahnks for this video, I've understand a lot about our setters and why I prefer some setters to anothers. But could you explain what is the difference when hitting a slow set vs a fast set ? I do understand the ball's trajectory is slightly different, but what do we have to change to hit these balls ?
@JumpVolleyball
@JumpVolleyball 7 жыл бұрын
For middle hitters, it makes a HUGE difference because of timing. Also, like Brock says, it's easier for hitters to connect with the setter. It makes a big difference when you start running a faster offense compared to setting high balls.

would a good rule of thumb be to always have the ball be above your forehead when you set? (like including your forehead in kinetic chain when transferring the force from your legs) this way your hands wouldn't dip down as much and more force would be transferred?
@thetjsanders
@thetjsanders 8 ай бұрын
YES! We definitely don't want to "break the chain" of force we have generated. Having "recoil" which is shown by the slow hands clearly does.

Hi there! I'm an amateur and didn't really get the difference. Does it have something to do with not "absorbing" the ball ie. having fast hands mean that the time of contact with the ball is minimal? Thanks :)
@kaveag

Yes, that's right, but it's true on the video it looks pretty much identical with this setter.

are we going to avoid slow hands??
@JumpVolleyball
@JumpVolleyball 8 жыл бұрын
+june francis regudo In my opinion, slow hands can be use to teach fast hands. You can do variations for your setter to understand the difference between both. Ultimately, I would encourage your setters to have fast hands. It is in my opinion more conducive to success at a higher level. What is your opinion on that??

@sand9346
@sand9346 2 жыл бұрын
To know how fast hands work you gotta know how to set slow. A slow set uses your whole body for the set, you absorb with your fingers wrists and elbows and push out with your elbows. Making the set really clean and slow, this is mostly used in doubles because you don’t need to trick out the blocker and the sets are much stricter. Fast hands absorb with your fingers and you push out with your wrists. This makes the set fast but has a higher chance of getting a spinny set, but indoors setting rules are pretty lax.

Aren't slow hands considered a "carry" or a "lift"?
@Rhonniel-Alcantara
@Rhonniel-Alcantara Жыл бұрын
If you toss the ball below to your face, or maybe you toss it in front of your chess, that's considered as lifting. But if you toss the ball up on our forehead, then that's okay, just immediately set the ball.

So we should avoid slow hand always?
@angeloiv4965
@angeloiv4965 8 жыл бұрын
+nknxt1 I think it would be up to the hitters to decide what type of set they like. Some people hit fast, some people like to slow down and use power... idk, maybe :D
@JumpVolleyball
@JumpVolleyball 8 жыл бұрын
+nknxt1 Great question, It's just because slow hands also slow down the tempo so when you do use fast hands and you move your feet to get under the ball, it's easier for you to have a consistent set and for the hitters to just go and hit and now have to think about the set
@JumpVolleyball
@JumpVolleyball 8 жыл бұрын
+Ariam R Very good point. If you watch a higher level of volleyball, are they using the same type of sets or are they setting faster? The reason I say this is because at a higher level, the set will most likely always be fast because the hitters trust that the set will be there. From a hitters point of view, it's also easier to hit a set that is faster because you have less chances of having 2 blocks on you...resulting in an easier hit? What do you think?

Slow hands look pretty much like beach volleyball sets, correct?
@JumpVolleyball
@JumpVolleyball 8 жыл бұрын
+VR1040 Music The major difference with Beach is that players setting a beach volleyball will often have a vertical trajectory. You can see in the slow hands example that the setter is bringing his hands down a little bit. The emphasis of this video is to really keep the hands high because that will allow the setter to be deceptive. The key is to keep the same tempo all the time and using fast hands makes it easier to connect with middles.

Slowhand like Maja Ognjenovic could freeze the MBs at the center of the net. Even when setting to players with high ball like Mihajlovic or Boskovic, she could still make a running set.
