A FAST Method for Retargeting Animations to MetaHumans
without creating IKRigs by cheating.
Recently the "Retargeting Manager" was removed from
Unreal Engine 5. In this video, I explore retargeting Mixamo animations
using the new IK Retargeter and IKRigs.

Another nice tutorial, you're on a roll :) Thanks for this. I've already been getting frustrated with making IK rigs that are almost identical to the existing ones. This is gonna save some effort.

I have been in the same situation. But It is fixed in UE 5.1. You can just choose Skeletal meshes with the same/similar bone structure inside the IKRig.

I love the new retargeting tool in UE 5 and found this video very helpful. I found the default settings make my Metahumans squat too much until I tried deselecting the Scale IK option. This made my imported motions look more natural.

I used this FAST Method for Retargeting Animations to Reallusion Character Creator 3 Characters without creating an IK Rig CC from scratch. Duplicated the UE4 Mannequin IK Rig and adapted to CC. Works pretty well without major tweaks. Thanks!

If you use the new Third Person Template and animations for the Manny and Quinn skeletons, you do not need retargeting because the skeleton structure of Manny/Quinn (SK_Mannequin) is very similar to MetaHuman structure. There is a simpler solution. Firstly, I tried to retarget these animations to MetaHuman skeleton, but I had some small problems. Then I discovered that it is possible to simply assign Manny skeleton directly to MetaHuman skeleton. You can then use any animation compatible with Manny/Quinn and it will work perfectly! Do the following steps: 1. Locate the MetaHuman parts (Body, Feet and Legs), but do not touch Torso and Face (as these parts share a skeleton with the Body). 2. Right-click on it and find "Skeleton -> Assign Skeleton" in context menu. 3. Select "SK_Mannequin" and click "Accept". 4. Click OK if you are asked to select additional bones. 5. Save the modified mesh. 6. Done! You can now use these meshes and assign Manny/Quinn animations to them. You can also read the documentation on how to use modular characters correctly. Search for "Working with Modular Characters" in UE documentation. Also, if you want to retarget animations, that are not compatible with SK_Mannequin (from Mixamo, for example), I recommend you to retarget them to SK_Mannequin instead of retargeting directly to MetaHuman skeleton. Because retargeting animations to MetaHuman skeleton may cause some problems, for example, the animation files become very large and take a very long time to import and export and corrupt some parts of MetaHuman (for example, the animation affects the hoodie strings when it shouldn't do so).

I did not get consistent results this way. I experimented with alot of MetaHumans and animations for different sources. It does not matter anyway, UE 5.1 has an improved system that now has interchangeable Skeletal Meshes inside IKRigs and the retargeter. So we are an update away from every current workaound, not being required anymore.

I also tried to retarget a Metahuman to the Third Person template's Manny and animations look okay, however, when I enter play mode for some reason my character's feet are stuck on the ground ( or just straightened out) even while running/jumping. I guess it's due to IK trying to force the feet on the ground. Any idea on this? Quite new to Unreal overall so any suggestions would be nice.

Thanks for these tutorials, they are the most accurate ones I have been able to find on KZbin. Question: I keep losing my root motion on my retargeted animations due to having to use the pelvis as the retargeted root. Do you know how to retarget without losing my root motion?

I've been following your videos since UE5 has offcially released. Super helpful! Thank you! You might have seen the City Sample Crowds in the marketplace and the video that JSFILMZ did on it. Would you mind exploring those and making a video about it? Wouldn't it be awesome to utilize their animations in other characters or create a character from that blueprint and add mixamo animations?

I did not watch the people playing the demos, had to get healthy then get back to work. I had some R&D time with the CitySample (crowds mainly) and swapped out the characters with custom ones. It was pretty easy to figure out. UE5 crashed on me repeatedly though. I will add your suggestion to the list. I am taking time this week to actually create things in UE5 instead of doing tuorials, so I will look after that.

Similar and you can use the new compatible skeletons functionailty, instead of doing it this way.

I would suggest buying animation packs from the Epic Marketplace. You can then retarget from UE4 or UE5 animations onto your Metahuman.

Using a metahuman: Too noob question since I just started learning ue5 for cinematic purposes. I am having the hardest time to animate an hand IK based on an actor pivot. Basically a hand hovering a sphere. I tried to use the edit pivot tool so I can rotate the hand as expected, good for posing, but while keyframing it fails preseving arcs. I would parent the hand ik to an null object, or offset the hand ik controller to achieve what I want but nothing worked so far. Any suggestions?

Thanks nice tutorial! Why did you choose the preview and not the normal that is actually referenced without the preview at the end, mine shows the hands and enkels on the body mesh! Can I use that one also without problems?

Yes they use the same skeleton. It is easier to use a preview version because you can see the whole body.

@@Jobutsu ahh ok I thought so thanks! I am coming from 4.27 and I am a bit confused setting it up. I have a project on 4.27 and want to use a metahuman as my main character. I have been having problems retargeting the metahuman sinds its missing ik bones and many of my animations dont work properly. Ill give this method a try. Thanks

Hi Jobutsu, Hope you recovered...Thanks a lot for your time, nice tutorial that perfectly works for me. Nevertheless, as a newbie , I do not quite understand what is your goal here, because, yes we can place an animated MetaHuman on the scene but how can we now play it as a third person ? There is a tutorial from Gorka Games about that but the IK is not working properly and the Metahuman feet dig into the ramp instead of staying on the ramp as the Mannequin does. Kind regards

Hi, excellent video... but i couldn't make it.... i don't have the "imported Skeleton" section in the bulk edit via property matrix. what should i do in this case? i use unreal 5.2.1

any clue on how to do this with meshes made in blender? have been hitting my head against the wall attempting to bring the clothes I made in blender to the character I imported from blender, both with the same skeleton, but if I import them separately Unreal 5 tells me they have different skeletons and they cannot merge. So, if I have different outfits for the same character, apparently I have to import the same character with different outfits instead of just the outfits??? Your explanation was really good... but no idea how to apply it to this problem :(

1. Check skeleton hierarchy to see if the match. 2. Makes sure "add leaf bones" is unchecked in blender export options. 3. Make sure imported Skeletal mesh has correct bone rotation. 4. You can also right click on the imported clothes skeletal mesh and Assign Skeleton, assign the base MetaHuman Skeleton to it. Without an example, those are my guesses.

If you have imported the character with a skeleton, can you not when you import the clothing select the charaters skeleton and NOT create one?. I maybe wrong BUT I believe that then use's the selected skeleton at import

Hi. Many thanks for these super helpful tutorials. I having a problem with the misplaced hand goals in the IK_Metahuman. When I try to change the pose in the Retargeter "Mannequin to Metahuman", I can't properly control the arm position. Any suggestions?

Clear/remove the preview mesh in the IKRig and then select/choose it again. Then hit reset pose.

New Metahuman downloads include an IKRig and IKRetargeter in their Metahumans/Common folder. Make sure you have the latest bridge plugin and download a Metahuman to check it out. These tutorials are slowly becoming obsolete.

the live link nice trick tho; (for retarget i use miximo converter (download, load up the miximo char skeleton it convert it to fit the ue5 skeletons or metahumans ) ....is just few clicks and download the animation, drag and drop to ue5 and basicaly that it just open ue4 to ue5 rig and replace the new skeleton and animations in the box ...will auto fit :))

Thank you!! I have noticed that path tracing is not working with MH if hair have niagara dynamics enabled. Additionally eyebrows, fuzz, eyelashes seems to have binding assets always diconnected on custom MHs - have you got any workaround ? Thank you!!

Path Tracing does not work for me at all anymore. Does not even show up as an option, if i enable it. I only have a GTX 1080ti, so assumed it was that.

Set "Default Skin Cache Behavior" to inclusive and see if that helps.

ive been mucking around with this and watching a lot of other peoples tutorials on this but im doing it with ALS community plugin cause its basically using the ue5/4 skeleton but one issue im having is that for animations like crouch , roll etc the character is floating in the air and iv hit a brick wall on how to fix this. My Metahuman isnt IK did they recently update the skeleton cause im using the base skeleton that all the metas use

Thank you for this amazing tutorial. I am running into following problem: as soon as I apply the animation, the grooming of my character is disconnected from the body and is hanging in the air. Otherwise the animation is working

I thought it would be simpler in 2022. I quit in 2015 because it was far too time consuming to produce a one minute video clip of one female Poser 5.0 figure walking along the beach. How do you remember where all the folders are and what each one has in it or what it's for? I'm off to get some Tylenol.

If your Blender animation has the same Skeleton as your Metahuman, import into UE5 and choose Metahuman Skeleton in the import settings.

Yes but the procedure differs depending on which software you are using. No to the IKRig though, you would have to rig inside the dest software.

Thanks this (almost) works for me! I think I have tree problems, first the Retarget pose is not correct - it looks like the "Retarget base pose" (I find that under the "Retarget source! would be more accurate, but I don't see how I can transfer that pose to the "IK Retargeter" - anyone found out how to? (Added: the Blend to Source setting does nothing for me??)

The third problem, how do I retarget a full animationBP.... looks like I missed it you made that work? Sorry/solved - you need to select the retargeter in the duplicate and retarget... dialog! 😁

The 2nd problem is that I cant see a way to retarget to a Folder structure like the one that holds the source, this is probably a general UE problem, but when you retarget form some neat animation package it becomes a real pain to keep things that way...

the upper body on my metahuman still doesn't animate properly following each of your steps, the right arm and head are bent to the left side of the body and i have no clue how to fix

Install plugin via Epic Launcher and then in UE5 goto plugins, search for Bridge and enable.

Even when using this technique, my metahuman's body changes proportion to have enormous shoulders and about 2 feet taller than usual. Is anyone else having this problem and is there a solution?

At the time of this video it was the only option. Now you could use compatible skeletons functionality because, Metahumans are now compatible with UE5 manny.

It is a quick and dirty method for those in a rush. It is a better idea to create an IKRig for your metahuman.
