This week, we go behind the scenes of one of the most brutal and influential thrash metal albums ever recorded: Slayer's "Reign in Blood." We'll explore the chaotic and lightning-fast recording sessions, the controversy surrounding its release, and the lasting impact this sonic assault had on the metal landscape. From Rick Rubin's minimalist production to the band's ferocious performance, we dissect every element that makes "Reign in Blood" a timeless masterpiece of aggression. We'll also delve into the lyrical themes, the iconic album artwork, and the stories behind legendary tracks like "Angel of Death" and "Raining Blood." Kindly like and subscribe - it really helps this channel a lot. I do appreciate it!

I got Reign In Blood while on a vacation in Canada and got it a few days earlier than the US release date. I cranked it on my walkman the whole 9 hour drive home and thought it was the most evil thing I ever heard. That album still stands the test of time.

In 1989 I was 12 years old. Me and some friends explored a recently burned down motel near our homes. In the remains was a cassette tape with a label printer tag written "Slayer". Somehow it had survived the fire. We ran home to play the tape and Angel of death came on full blast! I'm 47 now and it's still my favorite album of all time.

When I was 12 or 13, a friend gave me two cassettes. One was Sacred Reich “Ignorance”, and the other “Reign in Blood”. I blasted those through the Walkman, and thus my life was forever changed. Everyone knows RIB is a classic but Ignorance needs much more love.

Ya know what needs love is Sacred Reichs album Low. It's fucking great. Ignorance is a masterpiece and it has a lotta love . In fact I love the fact that it's not immediately talked about and a lot of kids now days don't know who they are. It keeps it in a way pure for those who know know. And when it is discovered it makes it all that more special for the kid who finds it like for you when you got the tape from your friend who you should of named cuz that dude changed your life with them tapes. Same thing happened to me In 6th grade I got Master of Puppets and Show no Mercy on cassette from a friend who wanted to buy a soda for a girl at school so he sold me the tapes for .25 cents each and I put show no mercy on first because I loved the Slayer logo on the pentagram not that demon on the cover though that guy still.looks gay. Lol. I had it on side 2 not realizing it and Black Magik ended up being the first song I learned to play on guitar then I heard puppets and was like ohhhhh then Reign in Blood which at first didn't blow me away I immediately loved angel of death postmortem reborn and raining blood. But a few days after I first heard raining blood South of Heaven. Came out and that's my fave album hands down from Slayer. Now back to Sacred Reich and DRI jk I be rambled for way to long because I'm bored and waiting to clock in to work and that time is about here so suck a bag of rotted dicks and listen to Sacred Reich Low the album because it deserves love because it literally gots none and everyone into trash knows death squad and shit. That was the whole point I was trying to make before I got so rudely interrupted by the past.

All the components required of a true work of art to make the maximum impact were magnificently aligned with this record. In this style of metal, it was the perfect storm of factors of the times. The front cover, ..enough said,..Toms voice, where do you start?..no 'trying' to sound tough or comical bullshit, or other annoying nonsense, utterly unique, fierce, and most importantly,..deadly , captivating and genuinely convincing in his delivery , he wants you to feel the emotional imagery , the revolt , disgust , contempt , fear, and torment in the lyrics of each song and drag you into them. Toms more of a narrator of a story , at either high or low volume , either rapid fire or drawn out , and he's superb at it. Guitar tones , tuning switch ups, riffage , syncopation , tightness and sound?, Scorched Earth Policy level, Daves drums ,..next level power, clarity and swing, Toms bass sound,..?..its there..just enough to be noticed if it wasn't there ,...rumbling below the surface. ..Song running order,? check, album running time?, ...just under half an hour on multiple formats, absolutely its masterstoke , check., half beat breakdowns or max warp speed when required to shake the song up,? check, blazing noisescapes of riffage and solos that would not work anywhere else but Slayer,? check. Effects?..There's a little reverb on Toms intro scream, and echoplex on the fade out solo notes /whammy bar dives from Kerry and Jeff, and Daves thunderous "dun!dun!dun!' intro to Raining Blood, and the thunderclap outro...and its fucking perfect.. My original album from '86 had the 10 second thunderclap/rain outro-deadstop, which left us just either looking at each other with jaws dropped or staring into the distance for a few minutes,...This isnt just an amazing fuckin' album, its beyond genres, styles and trends, musical abilitys, or even music. its a vital message in a bottle for the past, present and future. Humans were here,..this is our record of how some ugly shit went down ,and is still going down, how we thought about it and threw it out there. and I'm glad they did. Lightning in a bottle for Slayer and Rick Rubin.

A few others are overkill years of decay, forbidden forbidden evil, megadeth rust in peace, kreator pleasure to kill, and dark angel darkness descends.

My path into Slayer music was somewhat convoluted. The first album I've heard was Seasons in the Abyss in about 1992ish and I wasn't immediately a huge fan of the band even though I had liked the album. Then came Divine Intervention and their single Dittohead. That song felt like driving 300 miles per hour and then crashing into a brick wall [the song's fast pace and then going into that epic breakdown]. Everything about that song was perfect to me and I immediately went out and bought the album. Their gig was announced in our country in December of 1994 so I had to revisit their older songs so that I would know what they were playing. At that point I became a huge Seasons In The Abyss fan. Through the years I really started to appreciate Reign in Blood and South Of Heaven. They became my 2 favorite Slayer albums. The first album was also brilliant and for some odd reason I never got into the second. I have to say I was never a huge fan of anything Slayer did after Divine Intervention. Diabolicus has just the first song that I liked. I did like the Punk covers album a lot tho'. Then God Hates Us All was not my favorite album even though it had some good songs on it. I kind of stopped following metal through mid 2000s but I did like the 2009 album and the 2016 a little bit, but not as much as the previously mentioned. I have to give honorable mention to Gary Holt who is one of my all time favorite guitar players. Of course nobody could ever replace Jeff as he was the original member and heart and soul of the band with the rest of the original members, but Gary did his job amazing in my humble opinion.

In my country i purchased this L.P. reign in blood, being a teenager i was terrified with the front cover. i was going in church so i had it hiding in my room. my mom didnt noticed it, but heard the songs, asked me what was that. But didnt care.Until i purchased Show no evil and so the front cover when asked me to show me what i bought. She told me thats no good. all good as i keep going to church. The story continue, but what i want to say is that i was exchanging cassettes and l.p. so i can record in cassettes other bands. i met some rappers who show me their collection and i found in cassettes Reign in blood. That was weird. Some kids listen salsa and they explain me that album was amaizing.

Wow what a cool story! You had a pretty interesting introduction to this music, and it's also awesome to hear that the rappers are digging metal and vice versa. I love both forms of music, there's a certain intensity to each one. And of course if Mama doesn't approve - then you know it's got to be good haha. My parents told me not to listen to motley Crue because they had the pentagram on their album covers. So of course what did I do? Listen to them all the darn time lol

Making a recording is the attempt to capture a moment in time . The longer you stretch that moment out the less of it you can catch . So many bands fall into the trap that is called perfection . They obsess over the individual sounds themselves , and the technical perfection of performances . And if you do that you can make a records that SOUNDS great but FEELS terrible. But if you instead obsess over the relationship of the musicians themselves , and find the best way to capture it , you may have a few technical flaws but you will have energy and focus and that trumps sonics every time . Get everybody in one room when the mood is right , eye to eye , full takes , don't worry about bleed over because nobody cares . Set a limit on takes that session and go for it . If you can't get it thats ok try again another time . Everybody hanging on by the skin of their teeth to get through the song, THAT'S what makes it work. That way even if you replace a few things here and there it's all based on the bands best performance . In the end there are no perfect results , there are only perfect attempts.

Deep Purple, Zeppelin Black Sabbath. Alice Cooper, KissThe the Sex Pistols and Motorhead, priest, maiden AC/DC, Venom all giants of greatness BUT the Thrash era Metallica, Slayer, Testament, Exodus, Megadeth, Anthrax Voi Vod etc was and always will be the most extreme, exciting. Electric period in metal history and Reign in Blood is its defining moment

I can still listen to an love that album, would love to hear it from vinyl..... I played in metal bands for years, all original except once playing Reign In Blood for a few months with some guys. We only played a few shows but lots of people showed up to most of them, it was fun. When I was first learning the songs the picking was so much faster than what I was use to on guitar that it made my picking forearm sore until I got use to it. That album is super fast😂

I still have most of the cassettes I bought, there was a lot of cool shit back then. Was already into Slayer and when RIB came out it pretty much just got played constantly. I rarely used a Walkman, most of the time it was lots of speakers in a small space, like the ol cabover camper I had, pretty much just got the shit beat out of you. Eating acid and beasting out, good times.
