Seasons In The Abyss: The Story Behind Slayer's Thrash Metal Masterpiece. This week, we dive deep into the recording of Slayer's iconic 1990 album, Seasons In The Abyss. From the intense writing sessions to the creative clashes with producer Rick Rubin, we uncover the stories behind this brutal and influential record. We'll explore the band's mindset after the departure of Dave Lombardo (and subsequent return), the evolution of their sound, and the lasting impact of Seasons on the metal world. We will also cover the drama of the recording and touch on some of the band dynamic as they went into recording. If you like classic metal or are a fan of Slayer, like and subscribe - it really helps the channel a lot!

Seasons in the Abyss is probably my favorite Slayer album. It's a perfect blend of the two styles they introdouced on the previous albums Reign in Blood and South of Heaven. It has speed, agression, but also slower and heavier riffs. Every song is a banger and there are almost no fillers on this album. It's just one of those albums that used to be such a joy to listen to, because it never got boring.

@@ArcadeMusicTribute I'll even go one step further, most of the stuff after Seasons is filler. They had moments of glory after SITA but nowhere near as consistent as they were up to that point. No shame, literally happened to everyone. Even Mozart and Bach had some duds.

@@ArcadeMusicTribute - There's not an ounce of fat on the bones of SITA. Every riff and line feels like a critical part of a well oiled machine. One of the most perfect metal albums ever conceived. Regarding 'Diabolus In Musica'. Megadeth did it with Risk, Metallica did it with St. Anger. Trying to show how hip they were with the scene. Absolutely disgusting degenerate behaviour. But it wasn't filler. No Slayer albums have filler.

They gigged in Cork, Ireland back in 2016. My bandmate's brother's band kicked it off (f*cking power outtage half way through their set) and Mastodon opened before Slayer. Fantastic gig. I got to meet Hanneman and King in a small local rock bar the night before. They came down to the bar because they heard there was a local band playing Slayer covers. Absolutely surreal experience watching that gig.

I always liked their slower, moody, sinister sounding tracks as opposed to outright speed. Although it's hard to argue against War Ensemble. I really dug South of Heaven and liked it better than Reign in Blood. Seasons is how I got introduced to them though. Oh and Justice is the best Metallica album. Every damn song is epic and it has the best instrumental in To Live is to Die (no the spoken word stuff doesn't disqualify it from being one).

Definitely their best album. It took the masterful style from their epic debut album Show No Mercy and iconic Hell Awaits to the ambitious raw energy of Reign in Blood to the mid tempo breakdowns on South of Heaven to create the pinnacle and ultra inspiring Seasons in the Abyss. Although their next album would create a new sound with new drummer Paul Bostaph, the album Divine Intervention would prove worthy and become a fan favorite. Non the less nothing can compare to the sound and live experience as with Dave Lombardo on drums Kerry and Jeff on guitar and Tom on bass and vocals. Seasons for me was their Mona Lisa of Thrash Metal music and would solidify their crown of Thrash Metal Titans 🤟🏽♥️

My favorite Metal album of all time, tie with Slayer's God Hates Us All and Metallica Master of Puppets. It's important to remember that the album was a considerable leap in sales/success by the band. The #40 peak in Billboard doesn't demonstrate its real breakouts in initial sales, as everybody inside the industrial knows the terrible issues with Billboard charts at that time, specially due wrong reports, inverted pointed system and low weightning to independents stores. Seasons was #33 on HITS (2 Weeks), #31 on CASHBOX, #25 The Album Network (2 weeks) and #15 on Hitmakers, all in their national charts. Of course on the independent stores charts it did incredible. #8 in CMJ (even with some wrong reports cause by the same problem that effected Billboard: stupidity name for the main chart) and I still haven't found its position on Rockpoll. In Metal Charts it was #1 on Concrete retail, #1 for 8 weeks on the composite LOUD ROCK in CMJ and probably reach #1 at least for some weeks in Hard Hitters, Metal Detectors and Metal Pool (still searching for those). I still not find all its positions worldwide, but it was a top ten in both Irish National charts (IFPI: #10, Golden Discs: #9). If soundscan was already implemented in a more complete way (like it was in 2006, for example), the real peak in EUA could be even higher than #15 that Hitmakers finds. That's a lot of books, articles where even Billboard saids how wrong were their charts on that era, specially for bands with very fast initial sales and bands that sold really huge amounts in the independent stores sector (both Slayer cases). I still researching a lot of aspects about it (the Metal and specially the Slayer history about charts, sales etc). Sadly the 2 biographies in English tends to overlooked these importants aspects in the band's career. Only researching in all magazine at the time, specially the trade ones, you can find these important piece of lost information.

I noticed one of them was a Miller tshirt, if this is archival footage that MTV once used, they had a policy of blurring out/obscuring brands/brand names on everything, as they viewed not doing so as giving them free advertising

Tom araya is the one that ended slayer. Kerry king has continued and made a bad ass record “from hell I rise” I’ve been listening to it non stop since it came out

19:27 Rubin's shallow advice messed up the drumming of one of the best in the genre. This is why I maintain that musicians should take the advice of non-musicians with a grain of salt. Particularly when it comes to things that effect the music or the way they play. And before anyone comes at me for calling Rick a non-musician, he has famously referred to himself as such on many occasions.

Yep, it's like guitar players who are more comfortable playing with a shorter strap, but want to look cool on stage so they lengthen their strap and then they can't get their licks out. Same idea but for drums. Total bummer

I like every SLAYER album. Seasons is up there at the top, but so isnt South of Heaven. I dont dislike South at all, it was real good song writing.

Seasons in the Abyss was proof that nothing faster than Reign in Blood could be made and also sound great. There's only so fast that music can go and remain coherent.

For whatever reason, after Seasons in the Abyss, Justice for All/Black album, & Countdown to Extinction, I lost interest in these bands' new material. I got much more into Rush & Dire Straits and pretty much never backtracked to hear what the great speed metal bands had done. From 1983 through 1992, though, I grew up on the heaviest, most intense music ever created.

Megadeth really impressed me with their latest - The Sick, the Dying and the Dead. IMO, their best release since Rust in Peace. I would list it 3rd best.

Every album Hanneman was involved in after Seasons is average at best. The last two albums they did after his passing. They were a step in the right direction.

I always found this album overrated. By far Slayer's least aggressive album of their first run with Lombardo. I'd take Show No Mercy and Hell Awaits for sure over Seasons. I love South of Heaven and the tempo slowed down, but Seasons for some reason never clicked with me other than a few songs. I'd say Seasons is Slayer's most accessible album to the average listener so that's probably why it's so popular.

Yeah i remember when this came out, I still think it's their best LP, their most dynamic anyway, but I like break downs in the middle of songs the most so I'm biased I guess ..

Seasons in the Abyss is the only Slayer album worth mentioning... Rubin elevated the band on Seasons to make them average. The whole band is kind of a really. Araya can't play bass (all bass was always recorded by King), KIng cannot play solos - his 'atonal' solos are basically 'yeah, I learned this scale, I'm using it no matter what'. The satanic imagery was always naive and pathetitc - and pretentious and pure marketing rouse, given the fact that Araya is Catholic. Take German and Swiss thrash metal bands of the 1980s, Coroner, for example, and, unless you're a hopeless fanboi, you'll see that Slayer would be well suited to be their support band.
