Just picked up the 970 evo plus to replace my 950 pro boot drive. About 3x the speed as my 950 pro so yeah, it's super fast. I also have 3, 1tb sata SSDs for storage setup in raid 0 and after running multiple BMs, the 970 plus still out performs all by far. Very happy with it so far! For the curious, My setup includes a 6700k OCd @ 4.4 on all cores, 32gb XMPd @ 3200, and a gtx 1080 with no OC.

Hello great review, would this (970 EVO Plus 2TB) be a better choice over WD_BLACK SN770 2TB?
@sunnyjd3354
@sunnyjd3354 Жыл бұрын
Hi I know this is late reply but hope for someone else that in this dilemma as of Nov 15, 2022. The 970 evo plus 2 tb is $159 ( This is discounted by $80 for this period on Amazon ) The WD_Black SN770 2 TB is $199 ( No discounts ) as of today I saw the price at 179 on WD website. So $20 difference in price. These are both great drives but before you can make a decision on this you will need to consider a few things : 1. Drive durability - SN770 is 1200 TBW and the 970 Evo plus is 1200 TBW on there 2TB versions. 2. Drive speed - SN 770 is faster ( 5150 Mb/s) and is a gen 4 while 970 Evo Plus is a gen 3 ( 3500 Mb/s ) 3. Dram vs Dramless. Sn 770 is dram less but has very good algorithm perfect for small daily light office task. The 970 evo plus is has dram and is great if you will be using it a work drive for people that do a lot of photo or video editing transferring large amounts of data as you can have more sustained transfer speeds. This will just come down to price and if your system can utilize gen 4 nvme speeds. At this time I have a laptop and it supports the max of gen 3 nvme speed. My use case is general browsing and light/ medium photo editing and video editing. For my use case the 970 evo plus was perfect for price to performace. If have a system that could utilize gen 4 speeds then I would reconsider buying paying extra for the SN 770. If the price was the same for both drives then I think for the average user like me I would just go with the SN 770. Just one other this is hardware encription it thays a think for you then 970 evo if not then WD SN 770 . Hope this kinda helps.

Great video, and thank you, but first a look back..... LOL I STILL have my original Patriot SSD, (made by Samsung) from about 10 years ago. It is only SATA-2 if any of you even remember that, and the read/writes are in the 250-300 range. It was state of the art in its time. It STILL works perfectly, and I have it mounted in a Vantec external SSD enclosure. My last build was an ASrock X-99 Formula 3.1 2011v2 with an Intel 5930K. For that I bought the king of the hill at that time, the 950 Pro with read/write about 1,500. Just NOW I ordered this 970 Evo-2 1TB from Amazon, and will pick it up today! When it comes to bits and bytes, Samsung is the KING of the hill!! :-)

There is an error in your review. Samsung has moved to its newer 96 layer 3D NAND on the Evo Plus lineup. It is the reason they refreshed the line. It is the WD Black Sn750 that only revised firmware with their refresh, but are using the same controller and Toshiba NAND.

I hopped from a 970 EVO to WD Blacks. No noticeable difference at all outside of benchmarks. If you have an NVME drive, you won't be able to eyeball one from the other. The only time I really noticed a big jump was going from spinner 3.5" to SATA 2.5" SSD. Going from SSD to NVME was more benchmark racing in day to day use. Only the hardcore data scientists or things like video editors would probably get meaningful benefits. For gamers, I'd say a bump in load in screens - which might be worth it if you're hardcore - but not a big enough difference for normies considering the price premium.

Also, since there is currently no option for an external 4TB SSD, how would these 4 drives compare to each other when used as external drives via a 2.5" SSD enclosure with UASP support? Thanks! As for the idea: It's a fun question and I'll see if i can do it, but it'll depend on getting sampled as I don't currently need more SSD space myself and they're waaaay too expensive to buy just for one video (~2.5K for 4 drives :D). I'll take a stab at the conclusion though as generally larger capacity drives differ little from their (Slightly, not counting tiny ones) brothers. PRO wins. EVO makes the most sense, QVO good for light use only. Trick question will be what WD does. If its the same as before they'll need to keep the price between QVO and EVO. But maybe they'll pull a huge performance upgrade? Would be good to see some competition for Samsung tbh.

I'm building a pc for 2d and 3d animation. I'll be working with software like Cinema 4d, Iclone7, and After Effects on a daily basis. I just purchased one of these yesterday, but now you have me thinking about the temperature. Not trying to burn out my workstation; so do you think I should go with the 970 pro instead?
@TechTesters
@TechTesters 5 жыл бұрын
Hm, I thought I answered this comment already. My bad. Honestly, I don't think those tasks will load an SSD heavy enough -and- long enough (consistent without interuption) for it to become a concern. You can easily check SSD temps in software suites (HWInfo for example, but plenty alternatives out there). I wouldn't worry anyway.

Should I worry about the temps (and durability also cause of the temps) with Samsung 970 EVO Plus and Samsung 970 PRO - both off course NVMe PCIe m.2 ? I want to buy Samsung 970 PRO 512 GB and Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1 TB to MSI GE75 9SF with i7-9750H and RTX 2070. I consider other models or brands but had a feeling that maybe these SSDs are more assured/certain purchase.. I plan to use 970 PRO 512 GB for system and programs and 970 EVO Plus 1 TB for games and installed 1 TB HDD for data.. I don't have laptop yet but want to have some of this SSDs installed at start. But maybe if 970 EVO NVMe is much cooler than maybe for games I should still choose EVO over EVO Plus.. cause I would maybe not benefit from this extra MB/s but my SSD can get damaged due to the temps. I hope that 970 PRO is cooler than 970 EVO Plus version.. Or maybe for gaming consider this one: "Adata XPG SX8200 Pro" I was said that with my laptop I would get only 1 (and small - 256 GB) SSD: Kingston RB U-SNS8154P3/256GJ 256GB M.2 2280 x2 256GB SSD orTOSHIBA/KBG30ZMV256G or WESTERN DIGITAL SDAPNUW-256G-1032 - PCIe GEN3x2 NVMe Nice to see a lady in computer business :).

Haven't tested the adata so can't compare. As for your concern: From what you say there isn't a thing to worry about, you need to really hammer it non-stop with crazy workloads for it to be even a consideration. And thanks ;)

4:42 well as you mentioned yourself the 970 evo plus uses the same hardware as the 970 evo so it's actually more reasonable to add a "plus" instead of branding it as a whole new product which is kind of misleading maybe you'd be more satisfied if they named it something like "ultra" or "super"?

The memory itself likes being warm. The controller however is a different thing. Under normal circumstances there is nothing to worry about, it just shouldn't be confused with an enterprise / heavy database SSD, or at least actively cooled if you were to use it like that.

Scrubbing through footage etc can be drive dependent. Rendering is most likely CPU bound. It all depends on what you're doing and what your system is really.

What's the difference between Samsung 970 Pro and Samsung 970 Evo Plus?
@TechTesters
@TechTesters 5 жыл бұрын
3-bit MLC (Evo Plus) vs 2-bit (PRO). Ultimately not really something you should care about unless you run extreme workstation scenario's. For most typical users (gamers, enthousiasts, creators) the 970 Evo Plus makes more sense.

@Tech Testers I want to upgrade from a standard internal one terabyte Drive to an SSD Samsung 860 Evo my laptop was designed for a 1 terabyte drive. But my question to you is this if I bought a 2 terabyte Samsung 860 Evo will it still functioning properly? ( I believe the only drawback would be the laptop would not read the entire capacity of being two terabytes it may only read the one terabyte would I be correct I'm assuming that?)
@TechTesters

If it can handle 1 TB it can handle 2 usually. I haven't heard of devices that can handle one but not the other tbh. For some devices 2 TB is a limit however. Still, it's worth double checking to be sure.
