See this is the kind of thing I wished more trainers would do ... show the ACTUAL process in its reality. The repetitions ... the patience required ... the commitment. I think "we" (the people watching and trying to learn) get the false impression sometimes when we watch these professionals who either use already trained dogs to demonstrate a process or leave out the actual "work" that it takes to get the dog "trained". I understand it's "boring TV" but the boring TV is more likely to set people up for success by setting realistic expectations. (ie this doesn't happen overnight and takes a LOT of hard work). Kudos to you Tom ... SUBSCRIBED!

Agreed, so many training videos are shown and the dog is obviously so well trained and used to the exercise it doesn't teach us anything, it's much better seeing this kind of thing then you know what to do to correct any mistakes on the dogs part and probably more in my case the handlers part. 😂🐺 regards Joanne

Tom, please come to Central FL. I've had great ability/luck training dogs until now! I have a 12 wk BGSD who has NO drive, food, verbal, treats, ball, rope, nothing! Once a day, I can get her with a flirt pole but gets lost quickly. Her food was working, now she'll just lay down. Yes, she's been checked by a vet twice. I know puppies aren't your favorite but she was a prospect for my service dog and now..... any advise would be appreciated. As always, love your videos, thank you for sharing.

Great video as usual. Nice to see a new discipline right off the bat with a dog that’s never done it before. Is it possible to use a clicker and a verbal marker together so you can use one or the other in the future?

Do you have any advice for a dog that is not used to being around people?I have a husky/great pyronease that is a very friendly dog but will bark or growl at strangers. When he was very young, he was a bit like that as well, so I tried to avoid him being around people which is my fault😢 I want to know I can get him a dog sitter from time to time if needed & it would be fine.When he used to the person, no problem but he basically doesnt trust other people

Question, I’ve heard you say a couple times to not startt a puppy with treat training right off the bat, if it’s a 8 week old puppy to 3 months, how would you teach them then? If its without a treat to lure them. What would your way of luring specifically a puppy be? Cause an older dog, you’d back them up with the leash a little and naturally their bum goes down. I was thinking of starting to do it with his own food and then some of it he eats in the cage to help him associate the cage to being a comfortable place to eat/ sleep but once he’s able to learn the sit or whatever command, I won’t be using his food just praise/ toys

Hi Tom, I just got an english bulldog puppy and was wondering if you had any videos where you are working with bulldogs. They seem to be a bit more stubborn than my other dogs and wasn't sure if its just the breed like everyone keeps saying or if its me.

I notice you are using a food lure. When do you eliminate it? One of your previous videos cautioned against reliance on treats because a dog may not know the underlying command which is the goal without the food reward. Confusing

What do you do with a dog that gets board easily but you have to do repetition in order to teach them and don't have time to work them several times a day and he also has a strong prey drive. He will work for me but isn't interested after a while. In addition he is sound sensitive. Gun shot, fireworks, thunder and even flashes of lightening will set him off. I lose him completely as he attempts to escape and run to get away from it all. Thanks for all your hard work.

how young can you start with this training?
@jenniferpepler5843
@jenniferpepler5843 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Janice, I can answer this for you in case you haven't received an answer. I would start some training as soon as you get your puppy/dog (after they have had a day or two to settle in that is). However, if the dog is young, like 8 weeks old, keep the training sessions short and sweet with lots of positive praise when they do it right. I would do maybe a 5 minute session a few times a day if you can. Best time for a puppy to learn is after they have released some energy. So like after a structured walk, maybe do a 5 min training session. With young dogs (actually, all dogs) the best thing you can do is be consistent and patient. I hope that helps you! Good luck & have fun!

1st time I have added a comment. I think what you do on your niche is soooooo way ahead of anything else I have seen. Just brilliant for pet owners with sometimes very major problems. You are truly a magician. Sorry, but what you have shown is not what I would expect of any form of competitive obedience training. Even by your own standards way too long training sessions where dog is not engaged at the level needed for obedience competition. The emotional responses to behaviours I would want are very different.mWay too many repetitions. Maybe leave that niche to your other trainers that are skilled With competitive obedience. That area is a specialty like your niche is a specialty. But maybe I got it all wrong just because it is not to my standards expected of a high level competitor. Or just you didn’t have enough time to show (or I didn’t see) the progressions you teach toward trialling excellence.
