We are always burning fat. So sick of the you must deplete glycogen to burn fat. And how about maintaining a positive N2 balance to build muscle.

Man, don't you know, this is fasted workout, you only burn fat, so you need to take out the sugar so you can put fat into the muscle and that's when you get anabolic!

Day 37 of the true fast and I am now up 5kg muscle mass, PR on most lifts by 3-5%, so I just need to not eat for long enough and I'll be Ronnie Coleman with the strength of Brian Shaw

Hi Dr. Layne, I would love to get your perspective on EAAs... do they build more muscle than whey protein alone and whole food proteins, assuming I'm already getting optimal levels of total protein throughout the day? Does the answer change based on age, for a person in their 50s, 60s, or 70s?

I did a Mon-Fri extended fast once and it was not fun, but not too bad. I only did it to experience it. I doubt I'll find any good reason to do such a fast again.

Hey Layne another KZbin doctor said not to calculate TEF when planning macros (including protein) because it's already taken into account by researchers. After doing some digging, I learned about gross energy (GE) vs metabolizable energy (ME) in food calorimetry. is this different than TEF? Is 4.0 kcal/g an accurate way to calculate protein macros? Or should it be more like 3.5 kcal/g using corrected Atwater calculations?

So I did it 17 days. Here are the results: I've done it 2018 for 25 Days (without much bodydata). And 2024 for 17 days (with bodydata). 185cm, 129kg, 36% bodyfat, 47kg musclemass. After the waterfast of 17 days: 185cm, 115kg, 31% bodyfat, 48kg musclemass. (I gained musclemass?!) I trained 4 times a week, still as hard as I could. After the fast I ate a lots of carbs and took creatine. I went 7kg's up (what's totally fine, cause, it's water und food in the body). So, from 129kg to 122kg in total. You have to be mentally very stable to get through this. I thought about food all the time... But the health benefits are insane. My hunger is much more under control then I would've expected, still after this, after my refeed. My advice, start a month low-carb, then a month keto, then intermittent fasting. Or else the "keto-flue" will be very hard. The jump from having carbs to nothing makes you feel bad. Learn healthy habits to get back to, after the fast. Your body wants to shut down, get lazy. Move as much as you can. Train, to give the muscles the signals to keep them. You will get cold. But the fact that I haven't lost musclemass was the most surprising thing. (You will get a bit weaker maybe tho.)

Just to add from my experience. I would agree that fasting and building muscles may go together -- but only up to a point. I'm on a GLP-1 / GIP drug, and I lost a lot of weight while still building muscle. But as with anything there's a point of diminishing returns. I lost so much weight, my body began to rob from my muscles to sustain itself. I started looking bony and thin-muscled. So, I'm in a bulking phase right now and looking healthy again. In sum, building muscles while fasting or losing weight may work in the short term, but not in the long term.

I'm a math teacher and eat breakfast right after a planet fitness workout 3-4 times a week with 2-3 sets of 4-5 exercises/workout/week and this gives me hope. Why on earth would people believe that restricting their intake would restrict their growth? (I ask that rhetorically, because I know there are idiots out in the internets).

I would love for this health guru to go to a construction site and tell the construction workers: "You know the best way to build this building is by refraining from obtaining materials". The construction workers would laugh at him or curse him out. That is essentially what you are doing when you are fasting. You are robbing the muscles of the very building blocks necessary to amass more muscle.

This seems a bit besides the point?! I don't think he has anything against eating for anabolism, but in his mind this should probably be right after the workout. His point seems to be about how much energy is available for training if you're digesting at the same time. However, I'm also a bit confused about what his exact point is. It might be that you have more energy if your body puts its resources 100% to the training and doesn't divide it between training and digesting. Maybe you can achieve a better stimulus this way? I don't know, but it might be his point and I'm not sure if the studies mentioned here in this video address this specific point. But then he also says that you don't burn fat (from storage) if your body has food available from the ongoing digestion. Now I'm confused if this is about a more effective stimulus or if it is about fat burning?! That would make a lot less sense, I think.

Well yeah you're not getting in protein to create muscle protein synthesis.. you can workout fasted sure but you gotta eat right after. Some people do in the mornings if they workout really early.

This one is so weird because it’s so easily disproven even anecdotally if you have no deep scientific knowledge. I remember an interview with Chris Hemsworth saying when he was training for Thor he’d eat every 3-4 hours, even waking up in the night to eat. That means that he’d basically NEVER be fasting. He was massive in that movie, so why didn’t his food consumption inhibit muscle growth? Well turns out it’s because there’s a direct correlation between calories consumed and muscle growth. 😂 Ppl are ridiculous

righto i have data on this. been doin keto vore low carb what ever ya wanna call it. had bloods done as i feel it prudent. had elevated ck creatin kinase . now punters thats an enzyme produces from breaking down tissue. ! why from high rep squats on no carbs and a 14 hour fast. fasting especially in a defecit is catabolic not anabolic. it has its place but not of lean mass gains are your priority. PERIOD

He never denied that. You could build muscle either fasted or not fasted, that's what he's trying to say. It would make no difference if I worked out fasted or fed, I will build the same amount of muscle according to my genes, provided I'm consuming 1g of protein per pound of BW and in a caloric surplus. Fasted workouts are not superior to fed workouts for building muscle.
