That's if you insist on taking the incomplete BCAA's, which require other amino acids to build muscle; prevents fat loss; stops fasting; and actually increases appetite. Instead of BCAA's it is recommended to sip Green Tea throughout the day 7:00 10:02

You're only telling half the story on BCAA's. These studies you reference about BCAAs and insulin "Spikes" and resistance are in the context that they're eaten with an amount of carbohydrates consistent with a Standard American Diet. Clinical studies show that when taken by themselves with no other macronutrients, BCAAs barely have any insulin response, when taken with other forms of protein they have a slightly additive effect and when taken with glucose they have a synergistic effect... that's your insulin "Spike." But in the context of a low carbohydrate ketogenic diet, zero carbohydrate carnivore diet, etc BCAAs will not cause the same type of spike that you see when one has a high glucose diet, and they will not raise insulin levels to the point that they significantly inhibit fat loss, and they will not cause insulin resistance. www.google.com/url?sa=i&source=images&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwjXqLq14NfiAhVDKH0KHQpWDGsQjRx6BAgBEAU&url=https%3A%2F%2Fforum.bodybuilding.com%2Fshowthread.php%3Ft%3D127545143%26page%3D1&psig=AOvVaw0wGsUvc40ttfpCgfN-Mquo&ust=1560010028901334

This is why mass gainer supplements are usually primarily a ton of maltodextrin and BCAAS. Because it's well known that maltodextrin has a higher glycemic index than actual glucose and taken together they drive a tremendous insulin response.

That made me order them for the first time. Now I'm really confused as I said. QUESTION: Energy Drinks, like Bang and Reign, do they break a fast. They say they have BCAA advertised (even though I doubt there is much if any present in the drinks). I was going to ask something similar! I have an occasional Bang or Reign. Listening to the show while enjoying one of these drinks for the energy boost. I fast for 18 -20 hours on M and W. So, am I doing a retro action by drinking one in the morning to get my go on? Maybe we could get the makers to stop putting bcaa's in energy drinks. But I totally understand that there probably is not enough in these drinks to constitute a spike. Though, in the Reign, the ingredients listed in order of L-leucine, caffeine, L-isoleucine. Could be that all 3 ingredients are 300mg. But theoretically there should be the same as or equal amounts comparatively of L-leucine and caffeine. They never truly say on the can how much bcaa's are in them. Trickery!

Seriously... does no one critically vet your scripts before you preach? If not, send me your drafts and I’ll gladly do so. This presentation was largely based on a study: 1. Done in Iran 2. NOT done on ketonians 3. Conducted by questionnaire 4. Where no one ingested a BCAA supplement... they weren’t “given” BCAA’s. Their BCAA values were derived by analyzing the protein content of their food/meal choices 5. Was contradicted by the same study methodology in Japan... suggesting food choices have more to do with the results than quantity of BCAA’s 6. Where those in the highest tertile had the LOWEST incidents of insulin insensitivity / B-cell dysfunction / hyperinsulinemia. Love to know how you’d explain that. Loved all your personal thoughts on when best to use or avoid BCAA’s (I won’t be sipping them throughout the day anymore)... just think your use of this weird Iranian study, not using those in ketosis, is completely problematic.

Great points. I have been using a Eaas+Bcaas supplement, during workout and very strategically breaking my fast after for gains following one of TD's hacks from another video with great results. I am keto (avg 40g carbs/day) and IF daily. I have seen both increases in body fat loss and muscle gain dropping from 16%-14% and gaining 2lbs of muscle in just the last month alone which is when I added the Eaas+Bcaas. My thought process was muscle sparing, I am looking for gains, and leveraging insulin sensitivity with the Eaas+Bcaas and the taking of whey protein isolate immediately after the workout only. This is the muscle gain hack TD taught in another video about how to best get gains through fasting and strategically breaking the fast. Since I have seen tremendous benefit this month I am going to continue my Eaas+Bcaas only while working out fasted and breaking the fast immediately after experiment.

Ugh, Thomas DeLauer's channel has some good info, but this vid just doesn't make sense - it's just creating controversy so people watch. BCAAs DO HELP PREVENT MUSCLE BREAKDOWN; the aim of weight-training for most people when you're leaning down is to maintain the muscle. If you do heavy weight training fasted, you can't train hard for very long, and your body will increase muscle wasting which we want to avoid (especially as you get to very low body fat levels and have less body fat to burn for energy). So, take BCAAs before your weight-training (no need before cardio though) and it'll help you to maintain muscle whilst leaning down. You have the rest of the day to keep burning fat. Sipping on BCAAs all day I agree isn't the best thing, it does break your fast and is insulinogenic, but your insulin response is proportional to how much calories your absorbing. Eating a 150g carb meal is going to spike insulin much more than 10g of BCAAs. If not, we'd all be hypoglycaemic and fainting every time we have any BCAAs.

I will break my IF fast with a smoothie that I put BCAA's, Creatine, Whey Powder, and one scoop of NAKED MASS, with blueberries and salt. I do this right after (~45 min) of a heavy workout . I go to work all day fasted, go to the gym and hit it hard for an hour, then go home and make this smoothie around 5pm. I use the BCAA's to spike insulin which then allows the creatine to be better absorbed, and all the other benefits that Thomas mentioned in that post-workout video. I find that I am building LOTS of muscle this way and keeping the fat off since I'm fasting throughout the majority of the day. I will say that it is sometimes difficult to eat all my necessary calories within my eating window because this smoothie really fills me up. But I think I'm back in Ketosis by around 7pm for my next meal which is a my dinner. I am a 'hard gainer', and it is difficult for me to build muscle, but this has seemed to work. I'm up ~12lbs of lean muscle since doing this for around 4 months...158lbs to now 170lbs.

Try blueberries or fruit for recovery (like kiwi or strawberries). Consume immediately in a smoothie after exercise. Delayed Onset Msucle Soreness is caused by oxidative stress, it's not a necessary part of the muscle gain process at all. Also, keep your predicted renal acid load (PRAL) and omega 3's in a favorable state, and you won't have DOMS at all. You can track both in Cronometer.

Eh I can definitely tell a difference when I’m not taking BCAA. I’ve been on the Intermittent fasting for a few weeks now and I drank BCAA during lunch for hunger pangs and it helped me tremendously. I did not crave food whatsoever until dinner which ended my fast. I have now stopped taking BCAA and have been drinking green tea for the past few days and can tell a noticeable difference. Loss of muscle and the recovery has been pretty tough. Where as before I never got the sore while taking the BCAA. Now I’m sore and lack strength. On the flip side I have lost weight. So I’m assuming I’m losing muscle mass which is helping me lose weight. I would like to retain muscle mass and build while losing fat. So I dunno everyone has their own opinion I think everyone’s genetic makeup is different. I think you should just try either one and see what works best for you.

I take BCAA's with glutamine on a relatively infrequent basis, maybe 3 to 4 times a week, but only after a workout. I didn't stop to think whether this was a good habit or a bad habit, and I have no control results to compare with. However, I have always *felt* like a simple dose with glutamine post-workout, combined with an electrolyte replacement drink or some fruit, really speeds my recovery, compared to when I don't use them. Maybe someone wants to correct me on why this is a bad thing, or perhaps why I'm subjectively experiencing positive results with this habit...I'm just throwing it out there.

Dang! good to know. I've been taking BCAAs for the past six months and have been stagnant at my weight and realize that yes, I have been sippin on them all day. This may be a huge connection with my sudden inability to lose the weight I used to be able to lose fairly easy when I upped my training, but now it's not working. Thank

It's not a coincidence that countries that increase their consumption of meat tend to have more diabetes, like Japan and China. East Asians used to get most of their protein from plants, now it's mostly from animal foods. Japan has the same rate of diabetes now as the US, despite the fact people there have lower BMI. BCAA's are suspected by some researchers to be the culprit. Of course, you won't find the link between BCAA's and diabetes being openly discussed, but that's because there are powerful interests that prefer this bit of research be buried in journals.

So now you hate BCAAS??? IM so confused because in past videos you said you love BCAAS but it breaks the fast. I lost 15 pounds from having a colon infection, they had to do surgery to get the part that was infected out. But thats besides the point, I want to gain weight is the point. I love your videos but I want to know how to gain weight, not fat but muscle weight. I have taken your advice on workinbout slowly to trigger all the muscles including smaller ones. What can I do to gain weight???? Also you say BCAAS shoot your insulin level up, so does that mean if I take BCAAS for a long period of time will I be prone to diabetes?

Except when you are just parroting g new studies (which are mostly guess work) you've always been a healthy guy. Your techniques won't help people with real issues. Skinny teens who want muscle do not count. I'm talking about gainers nd fat storing disorders. Fat burning doesn't activate the same way.

I use leucine to break my fast (along with rice cakes and pea protein as you recommend for a fast breaking meal) to immediately shift my body into "anabolic mode" by activating MTOR. For people like me who have a whey allergy and can't consume whey protein (high leucine content) it seems like leucine is a great way to increase the leucine content of plant-based protein powders. To me this seems like a good idea/ common sense...thoughts, anyone?

Keeping my insulin low has been the key to my fat loss. I'm 38 and I haven't been this lean since probably 5th grade. Genetically, my family get into insulin resistance very easily. I think a lot of people are like this. Some people aren't. My wife is a hard gainer and can eat carbs and fat together and not gain weight at all. If you're at a plateau in your weight loss, then you need to control your insulin spikes. That may mean no snacking between meals.

i healed my diabetes with keto and lost a bunch of weight. but somehow half of the weight came back - even on keto. i think the BCAAs are the problem. 5 cappuccinos distributed through the day spike insulin 5 times a day. that insulin takes a while to come down, so i have too much insulin all day and that means that glucagon is blocked by insulin. so no fat comes out of the fat cells because there is no glucagon. even on keto! now it is clear that with still a little insulin resistance and bcaa 5 times a day i never can lose more weight. solution: animal protein ONLY ONCE a day. coffee without milk, some of the animal protein replaced with hemp protein. i will still enjoy fatty crispy pork and nice rib eye steaks, but animal protein maximum one time a day. i have not found the right protein mix with low bcaa but for now i go with hemp protein.
@HotRefuse

@@stefanweilhartner4415 You might want to mix in some fasting days. I'll eat just one meal some days, but most of the time 2 meals almost all fatty meat. You need to shock your body with hunger when it expects you to eat. That's when you'll dip into fat stores the most.
