What a great video! I am 72, have been very disciplined and athletic my adult life. I gained weight around eight years ago, and could not get it to budge, regardless of consistent exercise. I am very disciplined, eating. This past August 1 I began intermittent fasting 18/6 on average. Also I've eaten low carb. Finally I am losing weight! I'm down 16 pounds and hope to hit -20 pounds by January 1. Intermittent fasting has been a godsend for me I would like to lose 20 more next year, I will continue the fasting though because of the health benefits and I'm less hungry then I am eating throughout the day. Everyone is different, but this has been such a blessing for me.

Tammy, when you first posted this, I said to myself, “That’s great, but there’s no way I’m going to count macros.” Well, I made some big changes recently and am now counting macros (especially protein) and fiber and eating more often. I’ve increased my step count and started lifting weights again, and the fat is already going bye-bye. 😊 Finally, getting healthy doesn’t seem impossible!

Firstly, can say your makeup looks fabulous!! We need a tutorial for this look. Or maybe you already have one? Also, I find that it's what one eats on a consistent basis: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, etc. Holidays, birthdays, date night or other "once-in-a-while" events are fine to splurge a bit. I batch cook on Sundays so I know what I'm eating the rest of the week. If I'm short on time, then a pot of soup comes in very handy to keep me from reaching for the wrong thing.

Thank you for such GREAT advice and combing through so many diet topics to come to a REAL, healthy eating plan everyone can adhere to....the one that is tailored to us! You helped us to realize that we can't go on the low fat, high fat, low carb, keto, vegan, carnivore, etc. diets all at the same time. I tried it and it only left broccoli to eat. You helped us to sort it out. Thank you for being so giving of your time and energy and sharing with us your wealth of knowledge on this topic. You're as beautiful on the inside as you are on the outside. 🙏

Hey Tammy! I love your wisdom and your honesty. I have suffered from chronic migraines for many years. I have been a vegetarian and then transitioned to plant based for 14,5 years. About 6 months ago, I started following a carnivore diet to help with my debilitating migraines. It’s been working.. no migraines! Cutting out the grains, the veggies, and the fruit made an amazing difference. Additionally my bloating disappeared.. I am feeling at my best! Would love to see a video of your workout routines.. Yes..I was loosing weight, then I couldn't, and the fitness instructor said measure now instead of weighing, and a few times I lost nothing, some times I even put on a bit, but the waist and hips were smaller, the muscle weighs more than fat, so if you put on muscle and loose a little fat, you can actually be a bit heavier on the scales, but smaller on measurements. Ive lost 20kg (apx 45pounds) and feeling so much better..its taken me 2yrs. Swim x3 a week and go to gym the other days.. and eat 'healthy' instead of thinking 'diet', although I did get too tight on the carbs and passed out at gym and the instructor reminded me that I did have to have some carbs for energy, so I have put potato and pasta back in my diet. And I bought a Soda Stream, so I can have fizzy water, or add a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime juice to give it a little flavour.

Moooooo! Cause I love it. Funniest line you said. You made me laugh hysterically. First of all you look fantastic. But more important you look like you feel fantastic. You are glowing and you can see it in your eyes. I was skeptical to listen to your video. I thought, oh great another older woman doing something that hasnt worked for me. Your intro about all of the doctors say this or that hooked me on because I have listened to them all. Lol. I am 53 and went into surgical menopause in 2015 and been post menopausal for a while and have tried many things to lose weight. Last November my metabolism was messed up. Too much fasting and not enough eating. I wasnt even hungry. I felt horrible. I decided to start eating 3 well balanced meals a day and started feeling better within a week and sleeping better. Now I did also put on weight but I refused to believe that eating 3 meals a day was a bad thing for me when it made me feel better each week. I am also counting calories/macros and using MyFitnessPal App which has helped me a lot. My goal is to workout for My Old Lady Body. I want a strong body, dense bones, and to be able to think. I want to live an active life, to be able to pick up my grandchildren when I finally get some, and just to be able to live a healthy life. I also find it important to enjoy the food I eat and not obsess with the macros too much but to focus on carbs, healthy fat, and protein at every meal. I am with you, protein is the most important. I am still not losing weight but continue to feel better. I am encouraged by your video because it is similar to what I am doing. I have not figured out my macro percentages yet that work but I believe persistency and determination are key. Thank you for this. I would love to see more of your fat loss journey.

That is what it take! Again love your channel. Looking forward to watching all of your videos!

Loved your video! I'm 42 but had a hysterectomy 7 years ago and pretty sure I'm post menopause. I lost 42 pounds and still going and eat 1800-1900 calories right now and my macros are 50% carbs, 30% fat and 20% protein. I was eating more protein but found out it was dangerous and I had 6 weeks of kidney stones. I lowered my protein to 20% and no kidney stones for a few weeks now thankfully. I had horrible joint pain (and hot flashes, etc.) but found a daily cup of soymilk cures it for me. If I don't drink it, joint pain comes back. Australia actually prescribes soy food for women who can't take HRT.. I wish US would get on board with these natural options.

I’ve read oxalates in veggies esp uncooked can cause stones . I’ve never had a problem eating high protein but everyone is different .
@bev72366 ай бұрын
@@lynnsalberg5647 Yes, oxalates can if you don't consume enough calcium to bind the oxalates but in some people, they even cause stones no matter what. But that's only one kind of thing that can cause kidney stones, there are actually 4 different kinds of kidney stones caused by different things. High protein increases the acid load and then overworks the kidneys - great study done on PubMed about this. Finding the answer for me really helped! I also had to increase my calcium to a moderate level because my levels were too low. And lastly, drinking a good amount of water a day helps. BTW, nuts have oxalates as well and definitely something to eat small portions of - I aim for a tablespoon to 1/4 cup at a time, not anything more.

Thank you Tammy, I’m finally eating in a way that agrees with me (I’m 62). I can’t believe it took me this long, I’m carnivore two months and feel great, never hungry and I’ve lost my sugar and carb cravings (I’m Italian so it was the way I ate and loved my bread and pasta). Everyone in my family is diabetic so that was a concern for me. I’m losing only about a pound a week which I love. I’m doing weight bearing exercises, no cardio. I’ve always love fatty meats but felt guilty eating meat and was on high veg, lean chicken and fruit and nuts. My weight wouldn’t budge and would never be satiated. You’re right you have to find what works for you For me, I have to watch I don’t eat too much protein, I eat more fat, lots of butter. I’m curious what my numbers will be when I go for my physical 🤞. I can’t believe it took me this long to be happy and feel good about what I eat!!

Maria c - sounds good! I would try to get most of my 'healthy' fats with olive oil, though, rather than butter. As I'm sure you are aware butter is a saturated fat, which could affect your lipids in an unhealthy way. (you may be unpleasantly surprised in your lipid profile with your upcoming labs.) Whereas, olive oil being monounsaturated, plus having some heart-healthy plant phenols in it - does, imo, make it a better choice than butter as a primary fat source. But, yah...your choice of lean chicken (ugh, the worst, for trying to lose fat tissue!) Your body was desperately trying to hang onto as much fat tissue as possible - sounds counter-intuitive, I know, but that's the way the body wants to work for us....while we unfortunately view it as working against us.🤯 I actually consume both butter & olive oil. But based on what I've been recently reading (& watching in online health podcasts) I've upped my olive oil consumption & lowered my butter intake. I do feel that's a healthier choice, for me, at least. Maybe for most, idk. Just a suggestion😉

Just came across your video for the first time, and though I rarely comment, I felt compelled midway through your video! Thank you for sharing your experience!!! I appreciate your balanced perspective and honest candor! It’s so refreshing to hear a beautiful woman who isn’t denying a passion for foods that are “taboo,” in pursuit of an ideal….the key is that you are conscientious in how you navigate the holiday meals! As someone just passing through menopause, for the first time in my life, I’ve gained weight despite intermittent fasting, keto, Mediterranean, vegetarian, & paleo diets….everyone has their take on the best way to promote healthy weight loss as we age and it can be overwhelming! Your experience shows that while there are some common denominators (eg cutting processed foods, monitoring macros, consistency with what works, adequate water intake, cut sugar, increase protein, reduce gluten, variety…), the minutia varies for each individual…one size doesn’t fit all! Your words are inspiring!!! ❤

Thank you for this video. It took me ages to figure out what works now that I’m 45. I was in calorie deficit, ate lots of protein and started weight training which is generally what what’s advised for women over 40 but as great and strong as I felt, I was not getting any leaner. So I had to try something else. I lowered the amount of protein and calories but I eat healthy and I eat foods that are satiating, mostly protein and healthy fats. It was important that I didn’t feel hungry and enjoyed my food. I alternate between a week of weight training and a week of 20 min HIIT, and I intermittent fast but there are days in the month I don’t. I started seeing results very quickly when I made those changes. Good luck everyone!

Bravo Tammy. As a lifelong athletic healthy person, the struggle is real at 65. But doable! Just 2 quick comments… Im convinced that if people would track their food consumption on the free version of MyFitness Pal for just a FEW days, it would be an eye opener to why tracking is so important.Most people ( including myself) think they are eating far less calories than they truly are! No one wants to be a slave to diet/tracking/ etc but it really does become second nature once you put in the initial effort. It’s the first step to figuring out a plan that’s livable. Secondly, alcohol. I’m one of those people who like it. But it’s worth the extra research to learn how to track it. Because it’s metabolized differently than other carbs, it’s sort of not just a “normal” carb. Doesnt mean you can’t have it, just need to understand that it’s probably making more of a dent in your macros & calories than you think! I know you feel the same way when I say this: don’t let the perfect become the enemy of the good! There are truths we can’t ignore if we want better health but beyond that,we are not perfect and we all have to do it our own way. Thanks for your realistic approach. It’s what works for me too.

@tinaerardi38932 жыл бұрын
@@Scarlet-qg1xi correct, no carbs in hard liquor. The problem with alcohol in general ( even those containing carbs) is that there are no other nutritional components listed. So for people who track macros, that can be misleading. If you enter vodka into MyFitnessPal, it will show calories but 0 for carbs, fats, protein. But because of the way it’s metabolized, and because the liquor industry is not required to list any other components, it’s not really as “0” as it seems. You can find better explanations from reputable sources online( I’m not an expert!) but I believe for macro purposes, it’s supposed be counted as either a fat or a carb, using a specific formula for alcohol. Of course if you’re just counting calories or cutting carbs, my long winded explanation is irrelevant!

Excellent points!👌🏻 ❤ I stopped drinking any alcohol when I learned how much junk is in all of it AND that alcohol helps your body store FAT! WELL, I certainly don't need help storing fat!😂 I spend.a good amount of. Money buying quality foods and I was pouring poison into my body via wine and liquor. This is my personal journey. 😉❤

Tammy, you are an angel. I am 69 years old. I am really upping my protein, and it is working. I am losing weight slowly, but a little every day. When I am tempted, I say "I am all in," just like you do. I want it badly enough.

First, you look FABULOUS! This was a great video and refreshing to see women talk about eating and enjoying life. I can’t imagine cutting out holidays, doesn’t sound like living to me, lol 🤷🏼♀️ I appreciate you talking about eating various food groups, I’ve seen ALOT of women lately preaching about eating one way and one way only. Do what works for you, yes I completely agree, but they push it on everyone like it’s “the best” way ever. I’ve tried multiple ways of eating, and have ended up very sick and in pain because of it (carnivore for example). Have a great day Tammy!! 😊

Being accountable is key. I track everything every day and follow WW, combined with intermittent fasting. For me at the age of 65, I found that I feel my best when I limit the carbs and sugars. I include lots of protein and vegetables in my diet every day. The protein keeps me fuller longer and helps with muscle retention. If it works don’t stop, everybody finds what works best for them. I am not perfect and I’m constantly tweaking things. Thank you for your inspiration!

Good for you! I have been doing intermittent fasting for two years and lost about 8 pounds and have been able to maintain this weight and eat whatever I want. It works for me. I wonder how counting macros works with going out to eat. Please explain.Phyllis Heller

Hi Tammy, This is a great video. Thank you so much for sharing your weight loss journey with us. I'm a week in and lost 2lbs. It's only 2lbs but I can see a difference in my face. Not as puffy. Counting calories and macros makes sense for me. I'm so grateful that you had success with it and that you're sharing it with us. I get to eat what I like but with portion control and a concentration on protein. Measuring my food has been eye opening. I'm a healthy eater but I was eating huge portions and consuming tons of calories. It feels so good to be in control and not have life and food control me. I truly appreciate the time you are taking to educate us on this type of eating/diet. It's definitely a lifestyle. I also love that you're being real and enjoyed your Thanksgiving meal without guilt. We do have to let loose at times and enjoy holiday meals but then get right back at it. Please continue to share what's working for you with your weight loss, then maintenance and recipes. Love this content. You're the best!!

Just like you and Lou , you have to find what works for you. I had let my weight creep up over the years/ decades. 2 years ago I started intermittent fasting. It's easy for me and over time I lost 25 lbs. I don't overeat but do a midmorning meal and supper. If I am hungry in between I will eat but usually am not. I have never eaten a lot of bread but do love sugar. Dark chocolate four that craving. I imagine I will eat this way the rest if my life. Merry Christmas!

I love that you have found your way to better health & fat loss. The foods you presented in this video look so delicious. I need to find that chicken! I am several years older than you (71) and started my health & fat loss journey in 2016. I am 5'7" and at the time I weighed 160lbs. I was pre -diabetic and my stomach issues were just horrible. My doctor simply told me that carbs were not my friend. That day, I began my search for better health. I chose keto. It has worked beautifully for me. I am 120lbs and have stayed at that weight since I changed my diet. Like you, I do indulge during the holidays and my birthday. I enjoy every single bite of food. I learned which foods made me feel yucky and I avoid them. I'm so happy for you. I appreciate that we are all different and must find what works for us as individuals.

Tammy said for us to write a note of what has helped our health (and fat loss). I like to eat well for health, however, hubby and I were hooked on large servings of chips at least 4 times a week. I was stocky and bloated with high cholesterol and other elevated lipid levels. Well, we cut out potato chips without changing anything else, and I lost 17 pounds in 3 years. And the LDL, cholesterol and trigyceride all fell from red flag levels. Like you, I had many light bulb moments over these past 3 years.

I am loving this content and also recently started with macros. I use the Lose It! app. I read Jordan Syatt's book called Eat It!, it was my light bulb moment and totally transformed my way of eating and how I viewed dieting. I was always chasing this diet or that diet and was getting so confused and unsuccessful. This book and the way you are eating are exactly the same. I have found it so liberating. Can't wait for the fitness video. Side note, beautiful hair!!

Exactly! You are so right. People need to figure out what works for their body. Too much fat and too many starches makes my body hold onto fat. Rigorous workouts also don’t work for me. Thank you Tammy! I've tried keto, I've tried low calorie, and failed. I did the work, but it didn't work for me. Now I'm going to do high protein. I highly recommend viewers watch your first video, as it too was super informative, as was the girl who explained the macros. I'm feeling hopeful as I'm post menopause and can't lose weight as I used to do. You give me hope and encouragement. Thank you!

What do you mean when you say you tried keto? Were you in ketosis? And did you give your body enough time for the insulin to lower, so that it could let go of body fat? If insulin is too high, it becomes literally impossible to burn body fat (Dr. Ben Bikman). I’m not saying you did this, because I don’t know, but I see all sorts of people who say they tried keto and it didn’t work for them. Most of those people, when I ask, are just following a list of foods without actually knowing whether they’re in ketosis (or fat-burning mode). If you are not in ketosis, then you are not following a ketogenic diet. And the only way to burn fat consistently when not eating, is to be in ketosis. I’m also no suggesting you don’t try high protein, as some people (Dr. Eric Westman) suggests more of a high protein keto diet. Although, for us women, fat is also very important for hormone, brain, thyroid, and overall health.
@xMichelex8 ай бұрын
@@LauraB.335 I got into ketosis at least the test strips said I was, sort of a purple color I think. I logged everything for 3 weeks the last time, and I just don't know why it didn't work. It should, but for me I tried everything, bought and followed numerous books going back as far as Atkins and all the many versions. I don't understand it either. Since I made that post I have lost 60 lbs with low calorie and high protein and not limited sugar.

Three weeks of following macros….still not reaching my protein goal. Increased my activity. No weight loss but belly down slightly and I’m hopeful that if I continue and start reaching my macro/calorie goals I will start losing weight. These first few weeks was more about seeing where I’ve been so I can plan where I need to go. Thanks for going over all this and sharing your “what I eat in a day”…if you can get 150 grams of protein in a day surely I can find a way to reach my 120 gram goal.

Hi Tammy, have been following you for awhile. Was thrilled to learn you were also on the macros fat loss journey, which I'm also starting to make my way into. So far I haven't lost a lot of weight (still trying to figure out how to plan out meals properly) but have been working out and finding my body measurements changing for the better. Just ordered a smaller pair of jeans. My question for you is regarding the strength training. I'm finding that I'm getting a horrible headache whenever I try to lift very heavy weights. I'd love it if you could do a video on your strength training workouts. Do you strive to lift the heaviest weights? Do you get headaches from heavy lifting? How have you structured your routines? Thanks!

I lift as heavy as I can with PROPER form...I do not get headaches...You could be straining...perhaps have someone watch you to see that your form is right...if you lose form when lifting heavy...it is just that, too heavy for you...
