I can't believe that the video is FINALLY out.. The title is a little bit of a joke of course haha, but partly true ;)
He did so well and its so enjoyable. Once we will get everything fitted perfectly and we build some condition and find nice places to drive I think we will have lots of great times!
I got the tack from: www.minihorseshop.nl
Enjoy!

Cute.... but in the long run, not the best choice for safety. If you've ever seen or experienced a carriage accident you wouldn't think going without blinkers was anything but 😱😬. The reason for the blinkers is to keep the horse from being spooked, or distracted, by something on either the side of them. If a horse - even a pony - goes sideways or rears while hooked up it can be bloody and ugly.

idk, most carriage accidents i've seen happened because an object suddenly appears and the horses can't turn their heads to spot it before it scares them. Bear got spooked for a second but quickly collected himself again, i think once they go out more often he'll react less, he's just solely used to his paddock. 😌 whatever their decision will be, i'm sure it will be the one that works best for Bear!

Okay, let me clear this up... Blinkers are mostly not used to limit a horses vison, or to keep them from being spooked. In carriges with more than one horses, sometimes you have to use your whip to communicate with one horse, and we dont want the others to see that, so they dont think they did something wrong. Its really simple, but i still often see people who dont know it.

As a driver of a miniature shetland some things, well actually just one big improvement for Bear, caught my eye in the video. So please just take these hints. First use a driving whip instead of slapping him with the reins, the slapping with the reins is something he feels in his mouth so it is confusing for him, because reins are for steering. Secondly driving without blinkers is completely fine, I actually have a pony that is scared easily. And he scares even more easily with then without blinkers because with them he sees so little that he can't place other noises, now he looks and sees it is a car or a truck or something else that makes the noise. Good luck with your future driving plans, driving mini's really is fun!

I just wish they'd use boots on the ponies on hard surfaces like Emma Massingale does. Not only do they stop the slipping from metal on tarmac, they stop the pain in the pony's legs. People should try walking in metal shoes on tarmac and see how their legs feel. Because even in dress shoes instead of shoes made for sports, people get shin splints from walking or running on hard surfaces!! 😟

It may sound weird at first but when I go to a carriage drive with harness racing shetlands, I encourage them to go faster if they find something scary. The idea behind that is to train the pony spook forwards instead of spooking sideways when pulling a cart. It is so much safer for everyone that the horse speeds up and feels like it's running away from the scary thing than for it to turn around or step sideways. And this training done with a horse from a young age has saved me a couple of times while driving big warmblood trotters! When the horse's first instinct is to run forwards instead of anything else, I won't fall, the carriage won't fall and the horse won't escape. I have time to guide the horse to a safe place and calm them there. So speed can be your ally and not your enemy sometimes 😁

Bear did really well. I love that Jesse wants his horses to be as free as possible. Overall blinkers aren't a bad piece of harness kit if they stop a nervous pony from spooking but Bear didn't seem too jumpy. I am used to watching the Friesian Horses channel cart rides through the countryside and the area Matt and Jesse live in is just as beautiful. The Netherlands is on my bucket list of countries to visit if I am ever rich enough to make it to Europe. It does seem odd to have only one pony pulling but I forget how strong minis really are. He wasn't having any trouble pulling the boys the around and seemed to be enjoying it. That looks to be a good gentle exercise routine for Bear. Imagine how wild a ride it would be if Macho was hitched ahead of Bear lol.

Bear looked so good Jesse, he drove like he's been driven everyday. I also have two miniature Leopard Appaloosa geldings. The Miniature Leopard in my profile picture is my 40 inch or 10 hand driving gelding "Rusty" or registered name " Dot Com's Rusty Spots". I love driving and it's such a relaxing way to look at the scenery going bye. I have two antique pony carriages, a Miniature Dr's Buggy and a miniature Surrey with the fringe on top. LOL like in the Musical Movie by Roger's and Hammerstein's " Oklahoma ". There a song about the Surrey with the fringe on top. Anyway i think you should think about having your trainer help you drive both Mini's as a pair or team. You would love it and so would they. Have a great time driving. Nice to see you both Jesse and Matt. 😊👍🐴 all the way from Upstate New York🇺🇸

These things are called blinkers, or "Scheuklappen" as we germans say xD I do use them, since they help the horse to be more concentrated. Even though my babypony is learning to pull the carriage without them, since he's very interested in everything and I want him to learn, that there's no reason to stand still like a statue and stare everything to death XD

I enjoy watching the Barryhook channel. He has lots of videos showing the horses he teaches how to pull carriages. Mostly he uses a soft rubber bit and blinkers (maybe the term "blinders" would be less confusing; both terms seem equally popular among different people). Sometimes he drives bitless (halter only) and in an open bridle (no blinkers). The only problem with him is that he always drives on the wrong side of the road. What's up with those Englishmen, anyway? 😉 While his focus is on discussing training goals for the horses' owners, he sometimes teaches technique. He has a series on how to put on and adjust the harness. It's not very difficult, as long as you have a calm horse. kzbin.infosearch?query=harness

If you've ever witnessed or experienced a carriage accident you wouldn't think going without blinkers was anything but 😱😬. If a horse - even a pony - goes sideways, rears or freaks out in any way, while hooked up to a carriage it can be bloody and ugly. Trust me, I've been there and seen it. It's not something you want to EVER experience. Horses are prey animals so hardwired to be hyper aware of the smallest movements or things they've never seen before in their peripheral vision -- behind them and to their sides. Blinkers are not cruel or painful or unkind to the horse in ANY way. On the contrary, they keep the horse focused straight in front of them and prevent the horse from being spooked, or distracted, by something coming from the side. Even the most steady, easy going horse is still an animal and, given the right circumstances, WILL do that thing you think they never would. And -- even the very best of us cannot predict every situation. It's why they're called "accidents" and not "on purposes". So Jesse, please, PLEASE, use the blinkers. For everyone's safety.

Blinkers are always a good idea with horses, as they won't be spooked by seeing the carriage 'chasing' them. They are not cruel at all, they allow the horse to more comfortable. Horses are prey animals, so don't like anything right behind them.

Beach vehicles have huge tires. If you look up handicapped beach chairs or something you will see. Maybe something can be adapted for special beach trips. LOVE seeing Bear busy. I also love that he can see all around him. I think the blinders were used in city traffic situations to keep horses from being spooked and over stimulated. If your horse is well trained to passing vehicles then that should be enough? Look how he got to see the foal, sheep, etc. How interesting that was for him.

I have the notion spooking around my head (pun intended) that blinkers are also used if you have more than one pair of horses drawing your carriage, so that the pole horses don't get frightened by the forehorses' reins floating around in their peripheral vision?
