Great video and instruction!! Although I think you need to add something about bleeding the lifters before installing them, just to be safe. Maybe splice in a section of bleeding them before the part where you installed them.
@FatGuyBuilds4 жыл бұрын
i did, I told people to turn it over by hand. that is plenty to bleed them out. if people just turn the key, I cant help them.
@petmitsu4 жыл бұрын
@@FatGuyBuilds turning over the engine by hand a few times doesn't guarantee that all the lifters get bled. You need to bleed them all by hand individually as shown here on dsmtuners.com. www.dsmtuners.com/threads/how-to-replace-lash-adjusters-lifters.265060/ Even the factory shop manual states as such.

as you rotate the belt when it is on the tensioner takes out the slack... turn it slowly by hand and you should be fine. unless the tensioner pulley is not tight enough.

@jdmguy1855 жыл бұрын
no that is not normal the tension is incorrect and you risk skipping a timing tooth and smashing a valve against your piston. well you can probably still drive it like that but dont rev up high and fix the tension asap

I just did my timing belt, balance belt, pulleys and valve cover gasket on my 97' GST and now have low vacuum at idle, -10HG with a slightly rough idle. Once i changed the balance shaft/timing belt and confirming timing marks on cams and on all pulleys were correct, I rotated the crank sprocket clockwise by hand a few times to ensure the timing was still in alignment. Once confirmed, i started my engine and it idled fine. I put the 3 drive/accessory belts back on and everything and then changed my valve cover gasket. once everything was finished, i stated the car again and my vacuum reads a low -10HG when before the work was the usual -18/19HG at idle. It does not idle smooth and I can't figure out why my vacuum is -10HG at idle... If the timing or balance shaft belt timing is off by 1 tooth, can this cause -10HG at idle? Do you think I tightened my calve cover incorrectly? Can over tightening the CAMS cause this to happen? I didn't touch anything on the BOv side of the engine to cause a leak in the intake system, I just raised and lowered the engine while swapping belts... any insight would be GREATLY appreciated!
@FatGuyBuilds7 жыл бұрын
JohnnyBlaze6954 sounds like your timing is off. did u change cams?
@JohnnyBlaze69547 жыл бұрын
I did not change cams. I meant to say the cam sprocket , my apologies. after doing some research, i believe my exhaust cam sprocket may be off by 1 tooth.. Im waiting for new motor mounts to arrive in the mail so am waiting until they arrive to try again. do you have any suggestions on how to ensure timing is perfectly aligned other than aligning the timing marks all around & turning the crank clockwise by hand to make sure all marks line up again with no resistance? Do you think that the wrong tension on the Timing belt (tenioner) can cause the timing to be off? I will admit that I did not wait 15 minutes or so to see if the grenade pin was able to slide in and out freely, I just pulled it out and didn't check....
@roughcamaro7 жыл бұрын
JohnnyBlaze6954 you're definitely off by one tooth on exhaust side. Rotate cam slightly clockwise before attaching the timing belt to both gears.
@roughcamaro7 жыл бұрын
it will look out of time till the belt deflection/ slack is taken out by the cams wanting to rest.
@JohnnyBlaze69547 жыл бұрын
thanks for the advice. When i put the belt on, the mark were definitely lined up, i did not take into account the exhaust cam would rotate CCW by a tooth once the tension on the belt was properly adjusted and set!

I have never had to bleed them. i have done this like 10 times. by the time you rotate the engine 2 times to verify timing they will have been bled.
@jdmguy1855 жыл бұрын
okay this is a complex situation because we have interference engines so yes the reason why you lost compression on cylinder 4 is because the lifters were not bled. My uncle informed of this. When you tighten down the cam caps with unbled lifters the valve has no room to come up I mean theoretically you could run the engine with the cam caps slightly loose and that would allow the lifters to come back up but we have interference engines so thats impossible without fuckin up something. I dont know how fatguybuilds did not run into this issue or if the issue of unbled lifters is a freak accident of sorts
