Used to dress punk around the french alps, gotta agree with you on the "no zippers" part - they let water and snow seep in thus compromising insulation, on top of what you said - mostly durability, coz I was wearing some Palladium-made rangers and they lasted me throughout all of high school - it's the zipper that gave way first

Back in the day, I tried most of the military surplus boots- jump boots, field boots, ranger boots, and jungle boots- jungle boots are kinda weird but there's some appeal there. Also had veggie boots at one point, they stayed in really good shape for the years I had them, before I gave them away to a traveler friend. I currently own some newer grinder's, but have my sights set on some oxblood solovairs for someday down the road. I agree with your rankings especially the shitty sweatshop DMs- only wear those if you can get em used and cheap. Stoked you posted a new video Reptil!

My go-to the past few years has been the Thorogood moc toe, in Midnight (black with white/gray stitching.) They've got a different silhouette than the classic combat/ranger boots, but they're very comfortable and are made with legendary quality.

As a metalhead those 8” thorogood wedge soles are a dream when standing for long periods at shows/festivals (feel like a sneaker once broken in) and take one hell of a beating. Also a good pair of Justin steel toe cowboy boots are nice too just gotta swap out the insoles for nicer ones
@RoryLynott3 сағат бұрын
Yes. Thorogoods for the win. The American moc toes or plain toes. I got fortunate and found the moc toes for 125. The pull on Soft Streets are anything but soft, lol. I wore them almost everyday for 7 years before they gave up the ghost and cost me 65 bucks, American made.

Tanker boots are based off the tanker boots used by US tank crewmen to this day. The straps are used instead of laces as the laces would have a greater tendency to get caught on various snags and metal bits inside the tank. Definitely looks really cool, and I'm sure civilian versions are different, but I'm sure most people are expecting some level of discomfort with a lot of these boots I should say that traditional tanker boots were not designed to walk a lot in so just keep that in mind if you have to walk around a lot for an event or something. On top of that make sure you break in any new pair of boots you get to make sure they're comfortable for long periods of time. Just Google how to break in whatever material of boots your using and do it. Leather boots usually take about 2 weeks of break in before being ready for serious wear and use.

My favorite punk rock boots were French issue combat boots with the two buckle flap at the top. Back in the 80s, in Minneapolis, locally made Red Wing loggers were at the pinnacle of style. Although popular, even forty years ago Dr. Martin's were junk and extremely slippery in the winter. For winter wear I came across a pair of East German felt-lined jack boots, they've lasted me over twenty years and are still in good shape, though I've had them resoled. Several countries have felt lined or similar winter boots, search online, you don't have to look like a dork to stay warm in the northern latitudes.

brandit boots are good for the price but the steel toe gave me blusters on my pinky toe + lineman boots are known as pnw ( pacific north west ) boots and some of the models come with the lineman shank ( added piece of leather under the shank for stiffness ) and a lineman patch ( a piece of leather on the side of the boot to slow down the wear while on the job ) the lineman is just a model but i herd that a lot of people return them cuz the lineman patch and lineman shank made them too stiff so be careful with that some more brands of high quality pnw boots are Nicks boots, Franks boots, Whites boots, Drews boots and JK boots

As someone who used to be in the scene but sort of fell out with it. (just a change in tastes as i got older) the one thing that stuck was black leather boots, highly polished with my trousers bloused round them, i always just liked the look and was something interesting about the authoritarian military bloused standard and the ripped jeans i was doing it to. now i bought my first pair of Alt-Bergs back in 05, i have worn a pair of their boots in one style or another for the last 20 years give or take. if you like the industrial punk look, P1 peacekeepers are great for the look with the ultra chunky sole, if you want something lighter the warrior mk2 are my daily use pair in black. they are available in brown, and if you don't mind a evening with a few tins of polish, you can get a lovely oxblood deep red/brown to the brown ones, which can suit being paired up with jeans nicely. If you live in the UK, id fully recommend doing the factory tour and getting some customs, as once they have the last of your foot they can do you any pattern of boot custom fitted without additional visits. but the customs will run you about 350GBP. however, if you can live without custom sizing, black police and brown military surplus options are available for 20-50GBP. with only the sole wearing over the last decade I've used my newest pair. but a new sole every decade? i feel that's a fair trade. standard soles are vibram too which is nice for your knees and ankles if you walk on urban terrain all day, but enough ankle support to go hiking out in the woods without worrying, plus lots of grip, unlike DM.

My first punk boots were a secondhand pair of Caterpillars that I added pink trainer laces, screwed spikes and painted band logs onto. They were with me on some of the best nights of my life, had to lay em to rest last year as they simply couldn't be repaired/cleaned any further😔 Life goes on though, for new stuff, I'll definitely vouch for vegetarian shoes (their boots and trainers ranges are awesome, plenty non-pleather variants too like appleskin and cork, and hella cheap shipping if you're in the uk/eu), and against side zippers (they break way too easy, I was re-stitching mine as often as I tied the laces lmaoo). I'd be willing to pay top buck for a gladiator boot with an actual well-made sole, not just some glued shite that every brand besides Alpinestars seem to put out. Speaking of which, I'd recommend staying away from Underground UK-boots for two reasons: first, the soles are merely glued on in the factory, and for +$250 boot that is inexcusable, second, the lugs on the soles tend to gather up snow and small rocks at such a heavy pace.

look, im not gonna judge anyone too hard, at the end of the day it's your choice. but i IMPLORE you, if you care about the earth, DO NOT. buy "vegan" leather boots. theyre PLASTIC. they will shed microplastics for the entire time the leather laminate stays on them. and believe me, they will shed. no matter how nice they are, they'll shed eventually, and will ultimately be worse for the environment than the leather industry could possibly be. if you dont want to support the industry, just buy your leather secondhand. good leather, even if its old, will last you your whole life if you take care of it. pick up some old leather boots and a leather care kit. youll thank me later other than my vegan leather rant, this was a really good video- ive been wanting another pair of nice leather boots, since the ones i own are really good but really HEAVY. ill have to look into solovair, they seem to be just what i want. thanks reptil!
@dolphinloser65466 күн бұрын
I'm vegan and fully agree. My veganism is based in harm reduction, and vegan "leather" is not leather at all, it's just plastic. Additionally, leather is popular as a boot/clothing material for its durability and malleability - it's comfortable, protective and with the right care can easily last. Vegan "leather" will absolutely NOT last - it doesn't matter how well you care for it, it will shed and as it does so, it will fall apart. Regular leather boots if made well and cared for will outlast vegan "leather" boots multiple times over easily, often by decades.

FOR PEOPLE WHO WHEAR MORE THAN a 46 (European size) I have used a couple of ''grinders'' in the past and honestly they are of poor quality. They sell them as genuine leather and they are not. One of them broke at the eyelet part and I took it to be repaired and an expert leatherworker told me that they were made of very poor quality leather and that he was surprised by the price (for me they are in tier C or D). Today I use a German brand called ''angry itch'' that for the quality they have are at a good price (for me they are in tier A or S). The Polish brand ''altercore'' also makes good quality boots at a good price (for me they are in tier A)

The other pair I've owned for about 6 months, some Austrian surplus boots and they are so comfortable for long walks and feel very heavy duty. I would reccomend against veg leather because its just plastic and is worse for the environment and wont last nearly as long as a good quality leather.

I'm very happy with my Brandit Boots. Corcoran look very nice but I can't wear them because they are jump boots. I'm a German punk so jump boots (Springer Stiefel) are n@zi Boots

Find a deal on lightly used boots made in the PNW or someplace like Open Road etc and customize them w a local cobbler or diy I plan on buying Franks in the future but rn my most punk rock boots are my Iron Rangers and C&G monkey boots Want a cheap military boot w better build than doc? Look at William Lennon boots Thursday makes some nice boots for cheap or cheaper than docs and are made much much better Best deal for a PNW boot custom made? Look into the Indonesian boot makers. Indonesia has an awesome history behind their boots and are on par w the rest of the Pacific Northwest Happy hunting R/buyitforlife
