How to add a diagonal basket weave to a leather belt

I tried to keep this short, all I'm going over is the diagonal basket weave process I use on this belt. Any comments or suggestions are always appreciated, I'm always open to trying new things.

Jigs are wonderful, I've made several for my leather work. I buy Kydex off cuts, pretty easy to work with and makes a sturdy jig.

Great video, thanks for making it. Did you dye all of this belt brown or did you do a two tone type of colour scheme? And would you recommend using an antique on it after you finish dyeing it?

Just brown on this one, it's what the customer ordered. I don't do much multi color stuff, when I do it's on a floral carved piece. I don't do much antiquing unless I think it'll be the right look.

The heat index in Fort Worth today was 111, with actual temp of 105. Here it is almost 9:00 PM and the temp on my porch is still 102. Thanks for the tips on basket weave. I was wondering about the chrome weight that you are using and looked it up in your leather tools on Amazon. It's a jeweler's bench block and appears to be a smaller version of our stone slabs. What can you use it for besides being just a weight?

That's a good question. I haven't given it any thought since I needed it for a weight. I'm guessing that a jeweler might use it for forming jewelry since the chrome is very smooth and the padded side would dampen any noise. I may have to give it a bit more thought, it is a great weight for tooling leather though.

@@FatManLeather - It might be good if you just needed to tool a small piece of leather and not have to get the granite stone out. On another note, did you say what you do to prep the leather, water wise?

@@YoderTexas I'm not sure I did in this video. On belts I use some blue painters tape on the back, then use a spray bottle with plain tap water to wet the entire top of the belt till it doesn't seem to take any more (3-4 times) and leave it sit till it starts to return to it's natural color. Then I spray it down one more time and let it come back to the natural before I start working it. I find this is as close to casing the belt as I can get since they're so long.

Google translates to "Get the big grease pencils out of the picture". Not sure what you mean, a grease pencil would stain leather so I don't have them in my shop. If there is something I'm missing let me know.
