I need these exercises and some speech therapy. When I try to speak my voice sounds constricted. It’s as if I’m lifting something really heavy and trying to speak at the same time, but it mostly happens when I am anxious. Sometimes I will try to say a word and my throat just closes and I can’t speak or I speak but my voice sounds so forced people can’t understand me. Sometimes it feels like I run out of air but I will take a deep inhale before trying to speak and it doesn’t help. Other times it feels like something in the back of my throat gets paralyzed and I strougle to speak.

@@MsMorganGirls How did he get diagnosed? if you don't mind me asking. I've gone to my doctor, a social anxiety therapist and a neurologist and they haven't diagnosed me. They just give me muscle relaxers and epilepsy medication because I also get spasms and muscle twitches in my throat muscles and soft pallet and in my tongue, but the spasms only happen when I relax my body, so when I'm trying to sleep for example. when I was searching the symptoms I thought it was some type of myoclonus, but my neurologist hasn't diagnosed me with anything yet she still doesn't know what my speech issue and muscle spasms might be.

@i0073 He went to a ENT doctor, who did an endoscopy and saw the problem. There was no mistaking something was wrong with his voice. There are three different kinds of spasmodic dysphomia, and some online research can tell you what type you have, where some sounds are harder to make. Speech therapy can help, and when he was diagnosed, they were using Botox injections. RFK, Jr., has this, and I think Glenn Beck has it, too.

@@MsMorganGirls I’ve been trying to get my primary doctor to refer me to an ENT, but he doesn’t want to, he seems convinced that it’s all related to social anxiety or some type of epilepsy. I think the best thing for me to do is change my primary care doctor and try to get them to refer me to an ENT because even when I am not anxious I struggle to speak. Thank you, I will definitely try to see an ENT and also get some speech therapy.

I'm just wondering why the more tight or pressed the voice use a thinner or longer straw. But the more breathy the voicea wider or shorter straw can be used.
@roya89
@roya89 Жыл бұрын
I would guess that a thinner straw would provide more back pressure or resistance, which would cause the throat to open up more and correct the tightness of the voice. Whereas a straw with a wider diameter would provide less back pressure and perhaps cause the throat to open up a little less.

Does this exercise help vocal nodules or should I be doing it if I have got vocal nodules?
@LysdexicGamer
@LysdexicGamer 9 ай бұрын
I'm not an expert, but if you have vocal nodules, I would follow your ENT's advice. You could get a second opinion if you want to be sure. If you haven't seen an ENT for a formal diagnosis, I would highly recommend that. If you have vocal nodes, depending on how far along they are, you may be able to reduce them and eventually get rid of them through exercises given to you by a speech therapist. You only have one voice, and once it's gone, it's gone. Take care of it, and yourself, stranger!

Definitely, a YT video is not a substitute for ENT. जिसका काम उसी को साजे, और करे तो डंका बाजे। A singer friend had nodules. Got surgery done. Though he was very scared, as these surgeries have a bad track record, his turned out fine. Luck / blessings play a big role, he said. Try gargling with warm salt-water. It is no small thing. Reduces swelling /infection.

I use this straw breathing method as a way to convince smokers to quit! I suggest they breathe only through the straw for 5 minutes several times a day then explain that over time smoking cigarettes can cause lung cancer or emphysema which greatly diminishes the lung capacity leaving them short of breath. It actually works to convince them to quit smoking.

I didn't quite understand. Are you trying to increase the air pressure above or below the vocal cords, or both areas? On second viewing, I think the object is to increase pressure *inside* the vocal cords. By increasing it above (after) the vocal cords, it keeps the pressure inside the vocal cords higher, longer.

The subglottic pressure you mean? When you breath normally, the vocal cords totally relax and fully open, therefore, no pressure exists, and no sound is created. The more the vocal cords close, the more pressure is created by the air flow going between the gap made by the 2 vocal cords. When you sing with proper techniques, the pressure is enough to vibrate the cords but the air flow can still move pass the vocal cords comfortably. When you sing with bad techniques (no support from the diaphragm, no naturally positioned larynx), the vocal cords open more, the air escapes more easily, thus, if you want to increase the volume, you have to constrict the muscles around your larynx to tighten the vocal cords, and if you overdo it, the cords will rub against each other plus the pressure below them is dangerously high, you'll ruin your voice.

This is silly. It simply trains constrictor muscles and closes the throat. The best way to effectively use sub glottic pressure is to have well developed registration, meaning well developed intrinsic and extrinsic laryngeal muscles responsible for closing and stretching the vocal cords. Proper tuning of the pharynx to the fundamental is also essential. The straw technique develops mouth resonance, entirely the opposite of what you want. It is good for small white/thin voices.
