Caroline please do more informative videos, that teach us about skincare. I love your reviews and have been a reader of your blog for aaaages (you have even helped me on one of your online "clinics") but you are probably the only person on youtube from whom we can actually learn things about the skin. Your viewers probably live all over the world and if they knew how to pick their skincare (not just specific products) it would help a lot. I know you do a bit of that on the blog but i really think it would have more impact on a video. Thanks!

Going to a dermatologist is the best thing I ever did. Granted, I had to go because I had severe cystic acne, and so far nothing has cured me (and they've given me everything to try, truly. I've done Accutane) Having to take really great care of my skin because of acne has meant that I have really great skin, simply because I wash and moisturize and SPF myself constantly and with very little fail. Melanoma runs in my family and I almost lost a family member to it, so taking great care of my skin, inside and out, has done amazing things.

I've used prescription treninoin for ten years. It works. I've had dermatologists say my skin is wonderful for my age. It does flake though so I now put moisturiser on the top after a few minutes. Makes all the difference. I do Alpha H three nights and the retinol 4 nights and use layered high SPF in the day over the vit C serum and some Naicinamide serum. You don't need to pay out hundreds on posh creams. In fact doing the regime Caroline recommends will work far better at a fraction of the price.

Excellent info, Caroline. I find this a very confusing topic and you really helped clarify the topic. I'm one of the American Sisters and actually, one doesn't have to see a Derm. One can see their GP or primary MD as we now say. This makes it so much easier to obtain. The rub of course, is the cost. Again, insurance rules. Some people go to Mexico or Spain, etc. where you can buy it off the shelves, which I'm sure you know already. Anyhoo, brilliant video. Cheers, Rachel!!

Hi Caroline, what a great, informative video! I've only just discovered your marvelous channel so forgive me if my questions are redundant! I am 45 years...young...and have had some health problems since 2009 that began with a brain tumor (6 surgeries to follow). That being said, I've been feeling much better the last year or so, for the most part, and have begun to take care of my suffering, dry skin again. The years of illness has truly aged my skin about 15 years or more. My husband and I went to Korea in June and I bought many skincare products while there. After returning home I began using some of those products and to my utter amazement they are changing my skin! My skin seems to actually be willing to absorb product again. I am enjoying this regimen immensely. However, I also have a new retin a script from my derm as well as a vit. C serum that was recommend and with this I'm struggling as to where to fit these two beauties into my new Korean skincare regimen. In your opinion...do I need to ditch all my new Korean skincare in order to incorporate the retin a and vit c? I know the Korean skincare products aren't going to turn back time like the retin a and vit c but having used the Korean products for a few months now I have to admit they have changed my skin...and I hate to have to abandon them completely. If you have any advice on this I would so greatly appreciate it. Thank you! :) Bren~

Caroline, I've been studying the science behind skincare and my skincare routine includes a full arsenal of ingredients: retinol (prescription Tretinoin), vitamin c, citric acid, AHAs, and BHAs. There's such a craze these days to layer multiple products, so I've researched layering ingredients and read not to mix most of them because one ingredient can cancel out another. So, I use like-ingredients together and alternate them, mornings and evenings. For example, I use products with vitamin c (serums and creams) on Monday mornings and then in the evening, I'll use my prescription retinol, and on Tuesday mornings I'll use products with AHAs and then in the evening I'll use either Sunday Riley's Luna oil or Paula's Choice Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment...etc. (I'm still working up to seven nights a week on the prescription-strength retinol, so I use my prescription retinol Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and then alternate Luna and Paula's Choice on the other days.) In all my research, I'm most confused about the serums and moisturizers I can use with retinol. So far, the only moisturizer I have found that is just a pure, no-frills moisturizer is CeraVe Moisturizing Cream. In the evening, I'll wash my face and then apply the retinol product, then follow it up with CeraVe. So...here are my questions: 1) How can I effectively layer the ingredients on my list and/or alternate them? In other words, is what I'm doing making sense, or am I being a crazy person? :) 2) What are the best serums and moisturizers to use with my retinols?

They are fabulous, & even more so given the reasonable price point. While of course not every product is good for every individual, all in all the products are top notch, & while I use products from other brands, PC is one of the few brands that I feel confident recommending to anyone across the board. Related to this particular video (retinols), they offer many options @ all OTC potencies, including a "booster" that can be added to nearly any other product. While I use several PC products daily, if I had to choose one category of the line to recommend it would be their chemical exfoliants, of which there are numerous AHA & BHA options. Their toners are also amazing & something I have yet to find elsewhere; for anyone w/ dry skin the Skin Recovery Toner is life-changing!!
@lanternaBGD8 жыл бұрын
I don't know how familiar Caroline is with PC products, but it will be good to hear her opinion/experience. I found PC products doing what they say, and they do not promise unrealistic things. Every skin is different so it is hit and miss, but you can talk to them on the phone and discuss your concerns, they will send you samples. Every product you can return for full refund (or future purchase if you return it 60 days after original purchasing date). Very few products are on the pricey side (max is US$55 app 43 pounds) cause ingredients are expensive and packaging must be adequate. They go that fare that they admit: a really good skin care product should not cost more than US$50! Did you ever read or hear any other company saying publicly something like that? By switching to PC moisturizing SPFs, antioxidants serums and BHA & AHA, not only that I saved instantaneously app US$400 (compared to those I used before), but since than all my blemishes, sun allergy red, itchy, bumpy dots NEVER came back. It is my experience, but it is wort trying. Introduce one by one, carefully, return if not good, talk to them, write to them, and you will certainly find at least some products that will work and you will not break the bank.

Caroline's reviewed a couple of PC products on her blog. I think the main "issue" is that Paula's Choice (and Beautypedia) are fans of mineral oil in skincare, Caroline not so much.
@kpp05178 жыл бұрын
+IamaDanish oh ok, good point, thanks! I've even done some research myself, there's nothing that I've found that makes mineral oil bad for skin. however it's not suitable for certain skin types.

When I was 35 i was using prescription retinA, every time I went to a cosmetic counter to buy foundation or any cosmetics, they'd ask me what skin care regimen I was using, as they wanted to sell me their skincare, and every time I'd say I was using retinA and other products recommended by my dermatologist they'd tell me retinA was bad and would thin my skin. Well everyone but a guy at a Chanel counter, he was the only honest one that told me that was the best I could do for my skin. Anyways, I stop using it for sometime and I am now back on it again, I regret taking time off for sure.

For you people out there, especially in the UK, who want to get the benefits of vitamin A without paying a fortune for retinol, you should know that the FDA, in the US of course, has allowed differin to be sold OTC. You could ship that from the US through amazon or other retailers. Take note however, that differin is a synthetic form of vitamin A, and is not as effective as retin-A. It has proven to be almost as effective, and much gentler on the skin, and much, much cheaper than OTC retinol. But please, do your research on differin before your purchase.

I live in Athens, Greece, we don't need a dermatologist's Rx to buy it at the drugstore, and it costs €3 per 20gr. It isn't generic either. I put it on my face, eyes (which I know I am supposed to do, but there is really no problem with my skin,) decolte area, backs of hands, forearms and chest. I need a new tube of cream every 20 days. My skin has never looked better. And of course, I won't stay in the sun ever, and when I am out, I wear an spf 50, plus sunglasses and a hat.

I've had great success since seeing a dermatologist. I never had acne issues until I reached the 40s, which it seems no one warns you about, by the way, and had what was diagnosed as hormonal acne since it was confined to my chin area. I was on two different antibiotics for a while as well as prescribed two topical creams and what really made a difference was a regimen of spironolactone and the two topical creams. Spironolactone is a potassium-sparing diuretic, but it has been found to be very effective for hormonal acne. I also found out that two of my other doctors prescribe it for acne as well. One last thing, Caroline, check out skin care products from Zein Obagi. Typically his products can be found in dermatology offices or high end spas, but he has a new line of products that I really love using, especially one of the exfoliators and SPF50 which also protects from against high-energy visible (HEV) light.

I worked up to the strongest 0.1% Tretinoin cream, and I have only had intermittent peeling a few times. It took a very long time to see a noticeable improvement in my skin using it nightly, however..... well over a year actually, but now I am thrilled with the results! I am a post-menopausal 55 year old non-smoking woman who spent little time in the sun when I was younger, and who hasn't tanned since 1985. I have just started to add in Sunday Riley's Good Genes, and Luna two wees ago. Will there be a complimentary effect, or is that practice redundant, and a waste of money? Hi Caroline, I would like your opinion on whether or not retinols / vitamin a can help with breakouts. I have read reviews that it can due to the fact that it helps with resurfacing the skin? Any information about this would be fantastic. Thanks for another brilliant video x

Caroline, would you suggest using retinol on your hands? Obviously using an SPF on hands as well when out and about. I know you used them on your hand in this video but not sure if it was just to show the products?

In Dubai and the Middle East we can buy tretinion 0.05 % for 5 USD named "Acretin" in any pharmacy, also adapalene gels at 0.1 "Differin"

Would love to hear/see the actual routine with the prescription retinol. How often to use it and what is best to follow it up with, etc?

Another very informative video. Thank you. Could you perhaps do a morning and evening full skincare regime please as I find seeing the actual process really helpful?

Caroline, THANK YOU! This video was wonderful. You are so good at explaining things on a consumer level and integrating medical facts. Could you make a video regarding texture issues? I have awful scars on my cheeks from years of cystic acne and it is finally starting to bother me. Now, after winning the battle with severe acne, I have scars, pigmentation, and small bumps all over my face. Your advice for specific things to help that would be great. Thank you again!

Don’t know how it works in G.B but most general practitioners in Central Europe can write a prescription for a retinol cream, not just a dermatologist. Could that work for you in the U.K? Hope so.
