Favero has finally officially announced their new SPD Favero Assioma variant, called the Favero Assioma Pro MX-2 MTB. I say ‘finally officially’, because the unit was actually non-announced back in November or so on their site. And that followed a year or two of teasing about it. And even when it showed up on their site back in November, it was only for Italian folks to order in a public beta.
But, as of today, anyone can buy one - and it unquestionably delivers the biggest bang for your buck for an SPD-based pedal power meter, or for that matter, any pedal based power meter. In this review I’ll dive though my usage over the last few months, including plenty of accuracy testing, new features and more.

Me too I couldn’t even wait for Garmin. I started with Xpower SRM 1st generation and always trouble with discharging battery when not in use, then added Garmin XC (converted from Vector 3) with over 200€ just for the pedal bodies but in total cheaper than Rallye. It’s a pity it took so long for Assioma

Thanks Ray! Happy Assioma Duo user since 2018. I even mounted those (Duo) on my MTB for a race held mostly on forest roads. Still work (and look) like day one. The only problem was loosing the charging cables, but I had plenty of micro USB cables at home so I just ordered the overpriced connector... MX out of stock for 2 months!!!

I tried to order Garmin pedals from Competitive cyclist using 20% birthday discount and they said Garmin will not allow discounts (so much for my birthday fun). So then I ordered the Garmins from REI with their 20% coupon and two days later my order was cancelled claiming out of stock. (So much for my birthday fun). Today I found some Faveros and got em arriving on Saturday, saving a lot of cash. Gonna have some birthday fun!!. :)

Love my Assiomas. Will be adding these to my collection as soon as I can get my grubby little mitts on them. Heopefully this is a naming system that Favero will be continuing and that with the new spindle technology a Favero Assioma Pro RD is now in the pipeline. If they can do that and have it with interchangeable bodies even better. If not then just with standard q-factors will be fine. Hopefully a good year for Favero. As I said. Love my Assiomas.

For MTB pedals, the engineering around maximizing bearing life and the serviceability of the bearings is quite important. I'd love to see this in the comparison video you're thinking of doing. For example Eggbeater pedals suffer from a very short lifespan when compared to Shimano pedals and so I wonder what this looks like for power meter MTB pedals... As always a big thumbs up and thanks to you and your family for all of the work you put into these reviews!

100% agreed. I used to be a CB Eggbeater guy (for a loooonng time) until I finally had enough of replacing them every 2 years. Finally switched the shimano XTR pedals 3 years ago and those babies are still going strong even though I beat the sh*t out of them on a regular basis due to where I ride and probably my riding style lol. Would hate to invest even this much money in power meter pedals only to see them break after 2 years or less…

@@ericmagee9054 It's the most in depth from a mechanical point of view that I could find so far. He said he used them on his MTB and on his Enduro bike (though pedals are not rated for Enduro) over the year he had them to test. I thought it was worth viewing, but you could skip the last half as that mainly covers the power meter accuracy which we've already seen in DCR's video is great.

Thanks as always Ray. Read the full report before watching.... I've has the Assioma Duo for several years...long enough to actually have the recharge ability decay 😮. Favero support is amazing. These MX pedals are a welcome addition for gravel, bike packing, etc. - wherever SPD pedals/shoes just make sense. Your testing shows that Favero has offered accuracy on par with the Assioma Duo (I am still digesting the written report. wow!). Do you think Favero will retrofit the internal spindle design to their Look pedals? My only other comment is that other head unit manufacturers should buy into ride dynamics data. I pinged Wahoo several times and got no answer. Be well.

One comment on the pedal body (favero 49€ vs garmin 200€) - on Garmin there is a design issue so you can't change the body bearings, and when it starts creacking after 8-10 months, you can rely only on warranty to change the pedals, and after warranty you have to buy bodies...Hope Favero allows to change bearing of bodies - but if it is replacement at least the price is more reasonable...

Shane actually measured it. It is 11.2 but half of the height, from the center to the pad (spindle radius). Shimano state end-to-end height, spindle diameter (and I measured it). So it would be 22.4 vs 15.1 - XTRs are definitely lower.

I disagree. It's cheaper this way for the company and for the consumer. If the cable gets bend, frays, etc, which cheap usb cables tend to do, you can easily replace it for 1 USD. If you had to buy an entire cable with propriety plug, it's going to cost probably 19.99 and you have to bet that Assioma makes the same plug in 4-5 years.

I had a pair of Assiomas in the past and I've had a bunch of power meters berfore and since. The thing they all share is that sooner or later you will have issues with them, and there are big differences in how these companies deal with them. My Assiomas had an issue from day one and it took me five months to convince them to replace it, while I got a replacement set in two days after I called Garmin because my Rally pedals never came back alive after it prompted me to replace the batteries. I really want to like these new mtb pedals, I just don't trust the company. I would give it another try if they had a North American distributor for sure.

@@quincywalker4441Yup, I'm pretty sure we all have 15 micro usb's lying around, so I don't mind it. It's not as fast, but for a small pedal battery it doesn't matter

@@sgriff5692 so my top scenario that this is an issue is travel. To travel with the assiomas you need to put them into travel mode or else the accelerometer keeps them on the whole time. And then the only way to turn them back on is to plug them into power. And these pedals are literally my only device on microUSB, so I'm needing to make sure I have separate additional cables just for the pedals, and a specific charger with a USB-A output. If it was usb-C I could get rid of another charger and just keep the magnetic things in my bag.
