I've been old enough to remember 5 of the last 6 NFC Title game losses. In '87, it was Darrin Nelson (who the Vikes selected over Marcus Allen) not catching a ball inside the 2 yard line to turn the ball over on downs & ending the game when they could've at least taken it to OT. Then '98 of course & then 41-0 two years later. In '09, they dominated the Saints in the stats but couldn't stop fumbling, had 12 men in the huddle after getting a 1st & 10 at the NO 33 with a chance to go for the win, then the Favre pick, the coin flip going to the Saints & the bullshit interference on a Viking LB that set up NO well inside MIN territory for the game ending FG. And then in '17, I thought the Miracle might just break the curse cause nothing like that ever happens to the Vikes in the playoffs. Combine that with the #1 defense playing the backup Philly QB who doesn't move around like Wentz & I really thought we had a great shot & then 38-7. I don't think I'll ever let my hopes get up anymore. I fully expected the Giants to beat the Vikes in the WC game last year. I knew that 13-4 record was a mirage. At least they'll have an aggressive DC this year so maybe the D won't be so pathetic to watch.

I, along with many other football fans, still believe the 1998 Minnesota Vikings were one of the greatest single-season teams ever that never got their ultimate chance of playing in a Super Bowl. Which makes watching highlights of their '98 season so weird sometimes; they were a fantastic, stacked, team, with several members of the team eventually elected to Canton. And yet....anyone watching knows how it all ended that season. Such a gut-wrenching thought I would imagine for any Vikings fan. :-\

True, but '98 was truly a magical season. I thinks it's possible the Vikings could go 14-3, go on to win the Superbowl, but it still wouldn't have the magic that '98 had. With respect, I'll submit the '75 Vikings as the franchise's best team to not reach a Super Bowl. Five first-team All-Pros (Foreman, Krause, Page, Tarkenton, Yary), nine Pro Bowlers, first in the NFL in rush defense, pass defense and total defense, Tarkenton won the Associated Press MVP award and the Bert Bell Award for player of the year, and it all went down the tubes on one of the worst no-calls in the history of the NFL, in the Drew Pearson Incident.

Hoard was good all year. If they'd been using him toward the end of the Falcons title game, he probably wouldn't have run out of bounds 2-3 times like Smith did, stopping the clock for the Falcons & giving them time after the missed FG to go down & get a TD. I kinda blame Cunningham for not taking charge in the huddle & telling runners to stay in bounds to keep the clock running. It falls on Denny though for not coaching them up. But then Robert Smith was supposed to be so smart. I guess not then. I think they were a tad overconfident & just assumed it was their destiny to win

Overconfidence & a give-up attitude once things weren't going how they usually did. Robert Smith casually running out of bounds later in the 4th stopping the clock for the Falcons & saving them timeouts, Cunningham not stepping into throws for Moss so he's almost always underthrown, Billick calling a bomb when up 20-7 near the end of the 1st half when the 1 thing you don't want to do is turn it over because you're handling ATL just fine. No need to take an unneccessary risk at that point. They could've methodically taken it down field & ended the half with a FG attempt & been up 23-7. But instead, Cunningham was too loose with the ball by cranking his arm too far back & Chuck Smith got his hand on it & they scored almost right after the fumble recovery, taking all the momentum from MIN & going into the half in a good spot at 20-14. It was a little like Rocky cutting Drago in round 2 & changing the course of the fight. A lesser known thing was Denny Green's bad coaching at the end of the Cardinals Divisional game where he allowed John Randle to play until the end when the game was out of reach & he ended up hurting himself enough to where he wasn't very effective in the Title game. I think they would've been short a starting LB & either Robert Griffith or Orlando Thomas if they had made the SB. I think Terrell Davis would've run for 200+ on them so maybe it's good they didn't make it there. You could also be sure Steve Atwater would've been trying to take Randy Moss's head off

ted belcher meh it was really bad in the late 90’s early 2000’s. The 98 cardinals were the worst team to ever make the playoffs. Got lucky by going 6-3 in their final 9 games and all 6 wins were against teams with a 6-10 record or worse, and most of these wins (at least 4) were on game winning field goals, all were last second victories by 2-3 points. And they still beat Dallas in the wildcard, giving them their first playoff victory in 50 years.
@brianwaas70446 жыл бұрын
Okay, so in the 1998 Playoffs, the NFC had Dallas, Arizona, Atlanta, Minnesota, San Francisco, and Green Bay. Dallas and Arizona were the WEAKEST of those six teams. Do you know how many wins Minnesota, Green Bay, Atlanta, and San Francisco had in 1998 combined? Either 52 or 53 wins combined amongst them. That means those four teams' combined season record was either 52-12, or 53-11. Now on the flip side of the coin, you had Denver, Miami, New England, Jacksonville, the Jets, and Buffalo. The only team that year that had more than 12 wins on the AFC side of the coin was the Denver Broncos, who went 14-2. And they defeated two of these teams that were in the playoffs during the 14-2 season (New England and Jacksonville). If you ask me, the NFC was the stronger conference still because of the fact that you had four teams with at least 11 wins.
