I’ve seen a lot of movies in my time. Some good and some bad. And many others in between. But this is a perfect movie. The screenplay, the casting, the actors performances, the music , the direction. It all lined up and fell into place. A REALLY good movie has 3 out of those 5. Getting 5 out of 5 just rarely happens because it takes a little luck on top of a lot of effort. I read once that behind the scenes that the old man kept raw hamburger in his coat pockets while shooting the film. That’s why his dogs were always glued to him when they were walking together

This is my favorite film. After having seen in years ago in the movie theater one night, my husband and I returned the following day to see it again. And over the years I acquired the video and, when in a low mood, would put it on to watch and enjoy and smile and slowly get back into a good one ... all due to this wonderful, wonderful film where the entire cast performed brilliantly and the wildest and wackiest magical meetings took place and changed peoples' lives for ever.

That was Julie Bovasso who said that line. I was in a play she wrote in NYC; she was also a respected acting teacher who saw DeNiro's talent early on in her class. Julie played John Travolta's mother in Saturday Night Fever. Didn't she smack his hand at the dinner table? Wonderful woman.

Norman Jewison was looking around for someone to play the Grandfather. He asked Sean Connery about Feodor Chaliapin, as they had both been in the Name of the Rose together. Sean said to definitely hire him, but be ready for him to steal every scene he's in. Sean wasn't wrong.

I have watched this film in a way that I seldom do for any other film. The edges of the screen seem to disappear, and I am there with the players, part of the movie. When Johnny Camareri ask Bobo for the desert cart, and Loretta asks him to take it away, I see that nice looking Tiramisu, and I say "Hey, I would like a couple cannoli, and a cup of coffee!" I love everything about this movie, particularly the Puccini score. Bravisimo!

Agreed. Cher deserved that Academy Award. I suspect that no matter who director Norman Jewison had cast in it, "Moonstruck" would have likely been a nice family comedy that was entertaining and fun. But it was elevated to the lofty status of a truly great film by virtue of its stellar ensemble cast and their flawless performances. After 35 years, it remains one of my all-time favorites. It also reminds me of another underrated comedy about love and an Italian family, "Lovers and Other Strangers" (1970).

I wouldn't change a frame, not one frame, of this movie. Everyone's Italian but nobody is "acting" Italian. Even the names are satirical: Camareri, Castorini, Capamagi. One performance people forget to mention is the great Julie Bovaso as Rita, the sister-in-law, Raymond's wife. She coached the cast on their accents so everyone would sound like they came from the same family. (And if Rita wanted to sit down at the table rest assured she'd have said, "Hey, where's an extra chair?")

None of the nominees should have won in that year. The performance of the year In 1987 was Maggie Smith in ' The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne' who was not nominated for the Oscar for this film. I've seen this film, absolutely magnificent by her in this movie. She should easily have won her 3rd Academy Award for this, a stronger performance than the two films she won Oscars for. Almost criminal that she wasn't nominated for this. A lot better than Cher's Oscar winning performance in Moonstruck.
