Too young to have witnessed 15-1 in '98? That was even better. Even '17 seemed like a very charmed year (especially after the Minneapolis Miracle), they had the #1 defense & the 1st time they went 13-3, better than '09's 12-4. I think our roster is shaping up very well now so maybe another NFC title game letdown is on the docket? I like the new coaching staff

That would have been fucking awesome to watch, Favre throwing bombs downfield for Moss to snatch out of the air. If Randy Moss were in that team with a healthy Sydney Rice on the other side and Favre throwing to them they would have had a chance at being one of the most potent offenses ever. Plus it would have been pretty fucking cool seeing Favre throwing to Moss instead of playing against him. Even almost a decade later it is still so weird seeing Favre in a purple Vikings jersey, particularly the Vikings 2 games against the Packers. If you would have told people back in the early 2000's that Favre wasn't going to stay a Packer his entire career and that he was going to sign with the arch rival Vikings I don't think anyone would have believed you, lol. Those God damn cheese eating Packer bastards sure have gotten lucky at QB in the last 25 years. Seriously though, they have only had 2 starting QB's (outside of the few starts through the years that Rodgers missed to injury), and both those QB's will be among the top 5 or 10 QB's all time when all is said and done. Even if you hate the Packers you have to admit how crazy it is that they went from one hall of fame QB who played with them for years and years, then he decides to leave Green Bay only for another future hall of fame QB to replace him and play for years. I don't think there is a team in NFL history that had fewer starting QB's over an almost 30 year span. There are teams who start more than 2 QB's every other week, just look at Cleveland; they have close to 30 QB's who have started at least one game since they relaunched the franchise in the late 90's, lol.

I take it you weren't around to witness the '98 season when they went 15-1 (lost 1 game against a good Bucs team in TB 27-24) & scored the most points in history at that time. The whole Vikes offense was pretty much the NFC Pro Bowl team & they had some very good pieces on defense (John Randle, Jerry Ball, Ed McDaniel, Dwayne Rudd (guy was really fast), Dixon Edwards, Robert 'dropped 2 interceptions on the final Falcons drive in regulation when they ended up scoring a TD to tie & go to overtime' Griffith, Orlando Thomas, Corey Fuller & Jimmy Hitchcock, who they got before the season & he turned in a really good year before flaming out. All the stars were aligned & then poor team & clock management (Robert Smith running out of bounds stopping the clock for the Falcons at least twice on the drive before Wide Left) & a missed FG gave the Falcons an opportunity & they took it from them. John Randle played injured & was a non-factor in the NFC title game because Dennis Green wasn't a very good head coach (solid man however) & left him in when up by 20 at the end of the Cardinals Divisional game & he got injured. @@deanladue3151 - I agree. With Randy Moss on the team with the ability to win jump balls & get interference calls, they should've at least tried 1 deep ball to see if they could get in FG range at the end. Not trying that was inexcusable by Green. But even if they would've been able to try a game winning FG, it probably would've been blocked & returned for a game winning TD considering it's the Vikings
@deanladue31512 жыл бұрын
@@bifftannen1598 possible that he may lost his nerve, and he had just seen his secondary get absolutely shredded by Chris Chandler on Atlantas game tying drive. I think he felt the game was slipping away from them at end of regulation, and decided to take his chances in OT, but we may never know the real answer. And that Viking secondary was compromised when they started rookie corner Ramos McDonald, the Falcons went after McDonald pretty much the entire game.
@bifftannen15982 жыл бұрын
@@deanladue3151 - That's right. I kinda forgot about McDonald having to be in there. He was in for Fuller, right? That Chuck Smith strip sack fumble recovery right before the 1st half was THE turning point that helped keep the Falcons in it the rest of the way. I liken it to when Rocky 1st drilled Drago & cut him. I was always leery of Cunningham's throwing motion & thought someone would eventually get their hand on it at some point because he puts his arm so far back. I think the end of the 1st half was also a great moment to illustrate Green's lack of coaching. With a 13 point lead, it would've been wise to try shorter, controlled passes and draws & eat up the clock to make sure they go in to halftime with a double digit lead & maybe have a shot at extending the lead to 23-7 if they got in FG range, rather than have Cunningham take a deep drop & wind up like he did, leaving himself more vulnerable to turnovers. With injuries (Randle, Ed McDaniel & Orlando Thomas) & inexperience (Wong, McDonald) on defense piling up, pounding Smith & Hoard more was warranted, especially when they had double digit leads. I get the feeling that if the Vikes had eeked out a win that Terrell Davis would've run for 200 yards on them with their depleted defense & Denver would've had 40 minutes time of possession

I guess you don't remember the game really. His interception didn't cost anything. With current field position it was 52 yarder which was pushing it for longwell. Anyway first down , run 0 yards... Second down same thing... Timeout and then 12 men on field. So now 57 yarder is a no go. .. it was 3rd and 15 and they needed yards. Throwing it away changes nothing.
@dftmmwgitd4 жыл бұрын
Kristopher Kubsh it actually was going to be a 55 not a 57 as they were on the 38 yard line. Longwells long that year was 52 and career 55. If Favre ran out of bounds he could have picked up 3 or 4 yards, and he has someone in front of him at the 32 yard line. If he lead the throw out of bounds the recipient could have caught it. That would have been a 50 yarder. Longwell could have done it.

The following season the Saints were punished for cheating throughout the playoffs and attempting (with success) to injure several hall of fame quarterbacks, the overtime rules for playoff games were changed to prevent anyone getting screwed over in OT like Minnesota did, and the game has yet to ever be re-aired amid the terrible officiating crew that literally won the NFC championship game for the Saints. The officiating crew has since been broken up and the Saints haven't come close to getting as deep in the playoffs without getting their hands held while officials look the other way. Minnesota meanwhile has returned to the playoffs on more than one occasion with teams that are only a shadow of this one. This game still gets re-aired on occasion, because it does an amazing job of highlighting the best team in the NFL that year.

As a Wisconsinite, I was really proud of Farve, and not pissed off like he was some kinda traitor. But THAT NFC Championship game was the worst robbery by any team of the loser. It was almost as bad as that NBA West Final a few decades back, when Sacramento clearly outplayed the Lakers, only to lose by a whole bunch of horrible calls. Watching the Minny-N.O. game today just irritates the hell out of me. Many people say "Well, Farve made a bone head play"; but what QB would even be functional in the 4th quarter with all those viscious, illegal hits? At least illegal today, thank goodness. Farve had such great chemistry with guys like Moss that season, and was enjoying the game and playing like a 25 year old. His Vikings were robbed, and Minny STILL doesn't have a Super Bowl Title. New Orleans won big 2 weeks after this. Minnesota would have won even bigger.
