People forget he missed the 98 NFC Championship Game that year. Robert Griffith dropped a pick in the endzone that hit him between the 2 and the 4 after Gary shanked the kick. So many missed opportunities. Had they won and gone on to beat Denver, they would be regarded as one of the best teams in the history of the league.

Jake Reed wasn’t a number 1 WR in 1998 stop being silly lol. He was a solid number 3 at that time nothing more. He was on the downhill by the 1998 season and only started in 27 games from 1998-2002. Chris Carter HOF WR, but the most talented WR of all time who also garnered the most attention of any WR of all time was Moss. Remember two of the three greatest offenses of all time had Moss on them. Randall Cunningham was way over the hill who was out of the league and had a company working on countertops. They brought him in because Cunningham had a cannon and they had the greatest deep ball threat ever who showed made average to below average QBs better. This Vikings team was about Moss period. Chris Carter got the all pro selection over Moss in 1999 which is still one of the most disgusting things ever in NFL history. The NFL voters would only give Moss an all pro selection if he had 15tds or more which was pathetic. He deserved 5 first team all pro selections if not 6 for his first six years in the NFL which is still a travesty to this day.

But, Moss was a better rookie and in a single-seaon had more touchdowns compared to Jerry Rice. In 2007, Moss had 23 touchdowns. Rice's best year was 22. I love Jerry, but in the end it's like comparing Emmitt Smith to Barry Sanders. Go ahead and take the 'sure thing', I'll take the guy that's an instant threat who can kill at any time.

There were only 12 games that year league wide.

Cunningham was really something special. Even during down years in Philly, and I don't even like the Eagles, he could be counted on for a stretch of beautiful, textbook, deep passes. This has to be a top 5 all-time Vikings regular season game, probably #1. The '98 Thanksgiving win over Dallas where Moss had 3 catches for 3 TDs & over 150 yards is also in there. No team built themselves up higher than that '98 team (15-1) & then fell as hard in the end. If the Vikings had gone to the Super Bowl, they would've had to punish the Broncos with Robert Smith & Leroy Hoard to help keep their depleted defense rested. They probably would've been without John Randle, Ed McDaniel & Orlando Thomas. I think David Dixon would've had to miss from their OL also. At least they would've been in the Super Bowl though

Yeah man, I was in the stands selling beer for this one. The monsoon wind/rain isn’t totally captured, you could not find a rain poncho in Green Bay 24 hrs leading into this one. Believe me, I tried. The water was going down all 60 steps of the bowl like a waterfall and the winds were swirling hard in the bowl. Randall was and is one of my top 5 players ever and it was a total treat to see him in the flesh. I was 26 years old and no one knew what Moss was to become, we knew what Carter was. It was a clinic. Robert Smith was a great receiving back too, their defense was loaded. It was a HUGE game. Have seen many at Lambeau, this one ranks as so vivid and memorable. Randall fresh out of retirement shredding it, the new guard with Moss; very transitional moment. Had everything.

This game scarred me as a Packers fan. Packers had just been to back-to-back Super Bowls. This was the last year for Mike Holmgren and Reggie White in Green Bay. And the Packers drafted cornerbacks in the first three rounds of the 1999 draft. This game was the first moment the magic felt like it was dying.

The Vikings had a ridiculous record that year, were favored to win the NFC, but lost on a flukey missed field goal in the conference championship. Randall’s deep ball was so crazy. He had a perfect build to deliver it, but a flick of the wrist would put that ball in the air with such accuracy and distance that never quit….it just kept going and going…you better have your jets on full blast all day to meet it. Randy knew what was up.

I remember this game like it was yesterday. The last Vikings game before I moved away for college. I told my dad prior to the game that if the Vikings beat the Packers, they might go undefeated. They came pretty darn close.

I remember that game. The Strib's headline the next day: "GRILLED CHEESE." Greatest team never to win a Super Bowl. 15-1, but the usual Vikings' postseason choke cost 'em. "Gary Anderson Wide Left" is up there with "ground ball through Bill Buckner's legs" as a postseason failure.

Yes, some forget about those bombs he launched in Philly to Harold Carmichael and Mine Quick, when RC was earning an MVP while playing behind the worst OL in the league. It's too bad he wasn't matched up with a headcoach that could fine tune his short game, make him less reliant on running. It would have been nice to see Moss play with a great deep baller that was in his prime like Elway, Moon, or the arrogant QB that now plays for GB.

Was in a bar in Madison, Wis (Angelic Brewing Co., long gone) watching this. A lot of Minneapolis kids amongst the staff and patrons, so maybe 50/50 representation. Every time Brett threw a pic, some drunk girl would shout "Nice pass, Favre!" Some other Vikings fans and I were buying shots for one another--"purple meanies" or Goldschlager--at every Minn.TD, but we had to quit at halftime. I felt nervous about walking back to my car wearing the sweatshirt I was wearing, but I think the Packers fans were just too stunned to even be pissed.
