I agree. The film's primary flaw is it's poorly written and edited. Her performance is what makes it watchable.

She’s an academy award winning actress. It was a camp performance. She very rightfully regrets it. Serious actresses don’t want to be known for camp classics-over-the-top performances. By the way met her once and she was very warm and friendly. Hugs and kisses all the way. Nothing like her Joan Crawford performance.

Its a great film. But it was supposed to humanize Joan...that was the goal.... because of production value and how faye came off as joan, plus i think multiple script changes it came off as humorous....the opposite of the goal...its a catch 22.....you go in with the best intensions and then it dosent register.

She did such an amazing job though. Many at the time thought her performance was ridiculous and way too over the top, but over time people came to appreciate it, exactly because it was so over the top. I do understand it wasn't great for Faye Dunaway's career though, and that's quite sad. She is an incredible actress

Queen_K it's when a movie doesn't have good reviews back when it was made but as time goes on and decades, it becomes more popular and get amazing reviews and new generations discover it, and people become huge fan of the moves because of the extraordinary work they did in the movie, Faye danaway really was like Joan Crawford and captured the true essence of joan, it was eerie and a uncanny resemblance of the Real Joan Crawford...the real Joan really was like that...it has a huge gay following and people still love that movie...it have become very legendary and iconic millions of old and young fans now love it...which makes it culture phenomenon, which makes it a cult classic Aka cult following. you see Joan Crawford in the 1930s, 1940s 1950s was considered the number 2 greatest actress in the planet, right under Bette Davis who was the true greatest actress at number 1. Today the greatest actress ever is Meryl Streep of today, and the second greatest actress is viola Davis or Glenn close, or Susan surrandon...there is alot of great actresses today like dame Judy dench, Glen close, Susan surrandon, kate Winslet, sissy spasick, viola davis, Julia roberts, Faye danaway, Jessica lange, Sally field, shirley maclaine, Jane fonda, Angela Bassett, angelica Huston, all considered top notch real legit actresses. But the number one of them all is the great Meryl Streep.

Should have known better ??? Miss Dunaway totally captured the persona of the perceived Joan Crawford. That's what an actress does. She became Joan Crawford in the film. She should have own the Oscar for this Oscar worthy performance! This performance puts her in a total class by herself, and because of her performance, people still watch it and can even recite its dialogue for gods sake! So, should have known better? She should have won. Not to slight Kate Hepburn for On Golden Pond. But lets face it. Kate was playing herself really. Faye was playing a character.

This movie didn't ruin her career. Faye had a growing reputation as being controlling and totally self absorbed. Read Rutanya Alda's book The Mommie Dearest Diary. Faye's career was already on the downside. She won the Oscar for Network in 1976 and made 3 pretty forgettable films until Mommie Dearest came along. In Rutanya's book it is pretty evident that Faye was totally insecure and really over did everything in an attempt to recapture Oscar gold. She was gaining a nasty reputation before Mommie and I think this movie really brought her to the peak of that reputation. As a result no one substantial wanted to work with her again. Yes she appeared with Brando and Johnny Depp as she'll be the first to point out, but ask anyone the name of that movie and no one will know it or care about it. Ask about Mommie Dearest and people can recite the dialogue! Faye just needs to embrace this movie and enjoy all the fun everyone else is having with it and realize it's beloved!

Oh I know. She has been cited in interviews in the 1990's as calling the no wire hangers scene "almost Kabuki" [sic]. Yet the director commented in the 2000's that Faye designed the makeup for that scene and came up with the idea herself of the cold cream etc etc. Faye sadly seems artistically limited to embrace the role after. Yet even in LONDON I saw a rescreening of the film and everyone in the theater were screaming joy for her acting. Men, woman, young old. All of them. It is SO strange how people get bitter over something villainous and perhaps "film noir". Yet other actors totally roll with it and dance around and make film after film. I mean she was a difficult colleague as being perfectionist etc etc. There would have been soooo many villain roles for her in the 1980's I don't get why she never made much more.. endless cameos though..

there are 2 sides to every story and somewhere in the middle is the truth..there is a lot of truth in what you state here.....My family comes from a long line of folks that functioned in tv/film for over 70 yrs..my great grandfather was on the film crew side while his wife(my great grandmother) with a law degree represented various folks tied to both fil/tv...yes, faye was gaining a nasty rep....but what's missing is how/why that rep became attached to faye......to put it in prespective i wld have to attempt to explain it they way it was explained to me.....it involves Old hollywood vs, new hollywood.....a few months ago there was an actress(i forget her name) made a comment related to the difference in pay of women vs.men....Jeremy Renner caught alot of flack because in an interview he did not express any support...women in hollywood have always been treated poorly in hollywood......Bette davis, jane wyman, barbara stanwyck, greta garbo, ava garner,Audrey Hepburn.....these women payed their dues, worked their way up the ranks....but were never treated with respect.....many actresses in hollywood were described the same way as faye(bette davis, jane wyman,Barbara stanwyck)....an a list actor on a movie set that sat across from louie B. mayer and made his demands and appeared tough, strong willed, aggressive n assertive was considered a man vs a pansy....A women that demostrated those same traits was considered an out of control bitch...hollywood turned on bette davis around the 50's...because bette finally figered out that if i want to stop being walked all over.....i have to change my approach....both my grand parents worked on sets that faye was a part of and both have explained that many times if you are on set it is customary to approach a big star...my mom explained that there would be times she would be in the commissary drinking her morning decaf at 6am and if anytime faye came in she always acknowlege my mom...say good morning and ask...You think i could get away with a danish today?...many ppl consider faye's acting to be over the top in mom/dearest....it not faye's acting that is over the top...it is the writting and drecting that is over the top...a proffesional actor does not question a director on a set....they respect the individual in their role and take their direction....once i love lucy was underway and successful..lucy n desi purchased rko and expanded desilu.....once they divorced lucy eventually brought deso out and became president n sole owner of a major movie studio and became the most powerful women in hollywood...that helped to expand how women are viewed in hollywood.....carol burnett shares a bit of advice that lucy shared with her shorly after becoming president of desilu and the EP of the lucy show....if she thought a script did not work or a set was not constructed properky she had not be afraid or reluctant to speak her mind...its to late for me to say long story short...but i will conclude with this...i am not 100% sure of the rep that became associated with faye is 100 accurate and dnt think that rep wld have been attached to her if her name was fred dunaway...but i will not become offended or loose sleep if someone disagrees..

Ms. Dunaway should embrace her success with playing Joan Crawford. She did a great job portraying her, people are still talking about that role. When a great actor or actress plays a character and we the Fans start hating or loving the part they are playing...That means they are doing a great job at acting, because we forget who the actor or actress really are. So, I say to Ms. Faye Dunaway, take all the credit for a job well done playing the legendary actress Joan Crawford!...Jessica Lange was good playing Joan Crawford in the T.V. series "Feud"..But I couldn't stop thinking of Faye Dunaway playing Joan in "Mommie Dearest"..Any other actress playing Joan Crawford after Faye Dunaway is a hard act to follow.

She really did give a stellar performance in the film. It's just too bad the screenwriter and director chose to focus on the 'Old Hollywood' dimension of the story rather than explore the underlying dynamics of the mother-daughter relationship. The movie really was a far-fetched caricature of Crawford - Dunaway admitted it at the time and even Christina distanced herself from the OTT coat hanger scene as it was not consistent with what she described in her book. Dunaway was and is a great actress - unfortunately the director and screenwriter for Mommie Dearest were not in her league and the result haunts her to this day. Then again, as another poster here mentioned, Dunaway willingly portrayed a monstrous version of a public figure after that person was no longer able to defend herself. Maybe karma is a big, hairy b*tch after all...

I find it funny she's not worried about the total trashing of someone's character that is deceased and can't defend herself. Only worried that she might look bad in the public eye or lose a roll .

But she's a woman, playing an iconic woman. No one had issues with Social Network, Steve Jobs and many other biopics where males are controverisal, complex, horrible to other people etc. That's different, since they are males. They can be all those things, and if the actor has issues with the nasty part of these real life characters, then it's fine, since again, they are males. It's pretty much that simple.

This is one of the best characters, ever. She did a, deliciously, fabulous job. Campy perfection. She will forever be remembered for this role. I think people really appreciate the value her work in this. I think she got more traction out of this role than she may have otherwise. What a legacy to have.

Poor Faye ,she was and still is an exceptional actress. I have seen that film twice once aged 9 and then later on, each time, I found it very harrowing, the coathanger scene reminded me of another disturbing film Sibil with Sally Field ,where her mother chained her to the ironing board. I would imagine both roles were incredibly. emotionally draining for both Faye and Sally. Faye, truly was Joan Crawford in that film so much so it was unnerving to watch her my thoughts go out to Christina

I went to see "mommie dearest", w/my own mom,at The Chinese Theater in Hollywood. During the film, people would laugh during some parts of the film, where it should've been serious! During the scene (the wire hanger one) my mom started laughing uncontrollably. I kept shushinging her to stop, but it was just too funny, pretty soon the entire theater started gigiling. When Faye hit the little girl w/the cleanser can, my mom lost it, and the entire theater was just all out in hysterics! At the end of the scene, when she says,"You figure it out", Faye made this incredibly weird, strange looking face, then leaves, I swear I have never seen another film where people laughed that loudly, for that long! "Mommie Dearest",is a cult classic!

I ain't goin lie I kinda laughed at that scene too cuz she was hitting the bed so I was confused like is she supposed to be hitting the bed or the little girl so it's just stunt acting.. but once I realized what the story was telling me I stopped laughing. My mom beat me with a wire hanger once... but we were cleaning up at the time.. it was the middle of the day and I kept getting slick with my ma in a small hot closet 😂🤣 I learned my lesson that day.. and I was like 9 but I wouldn't call my story abuse but this story definitely was..

When you are typecast from playing a part, that means you were so believable in that role, people cannot get past it. Faye WAS Joan Crawford in the movie. The look. The strong voice and personality. She played this part impeccably! And she was so real, Faye had problems finding roles after MD, because people thought she was really like that. That is just suburb acting. It’s a double edged sword in Hollywood. That’s the nature of the business. Same thing happened to Linda Blair.

Dunaway also made a film called The Wicked Lady! This film was the nail in the coffin despite having a very recognizable cast. Marina Sirtis, an unknown then, got an unfortunate career start in the infamous whipping scene! John Guilloide was heard saying that the director misrepresented what the film was about and supposedly plotted to end the late Michael Winner"s career! A historical farce wound up getting an NC-17 rating! That in 1984 before such ratings were thought up! Suffice it to say Dunaway had made a soft porn film! Dunaway should take notes from Sirtis! The actress made lemonade out of the questionable firsts films she has made and is very grateful for the role of Deanna Troi in Star Trek! Sirtis isn't complaining about her fate! Why is Dunaway!

she was a very fine actress. when i think of her performances, the word "intense" comes to mind. she is passionate, and all consumed with the part. i look at NETWORK, and MOMMIE DEAREST, and she is INTENSE in the part. she was actually very good as CRAWFORD, but it was a bit over the top in parts. i guess that was her being into the part. look at her EVA PARON performance, that was "over the top" as well, but good.
