Great job! I'm really looking forward to you doing a further review on Faye! The top 5 here (all ballads, as they tend to be more popular in Chinese/Cantopop) do not do justice to the diversity in her music. Hence I cannot resist taking the liberty to recommend some of these more "alternative" pieces that really showcase her musical agility and versatility: 1) 1996 album (Fu Zao) track 3 (Imagination) 2) 1996 album (Fu Zao) track 4 (Division) 3) 1998 album (Sing and Play) track 2 (Face) 4) 1999 album (Only Love Strangers) track 1 (The Last Blossom) 5) 2001 album (Faye Wong) track 8 (Idiot)
@Fayenatic2 жыл бұрын
Yesss!!!! These top 5 do not reflect Faye at all . Great list. Bi an hua (track 5) Or any of the first five songs from the album Fable (2000) are a must. They reflect Faye's artistry very well

@samuelbjork2 жыл бұрын
I agree that these 5 songs do not do Faye justice at all, they are not even her top-tier songs in my opinion. Pls listen to the first five songs in Fable, it’s sort of a pentalogy, the five songs form a story, the music is not too poppy sounding (some people may need more time to digest it) but very artistic, layered and consistent. Or try “Eyes On Me” where she sings in English, another ballad though. Her albums from 1994 to 2000 are the best, especially those from 1998 - 2000.

Great review! You have got the essence of Faye. Although Faye's songs are very popular and widely sung by common people. It is relatively rare to see covers from other famous singers. Because when they start to sing Faye's songs, comparing with original version people can easily find the weakness of that singer and see how far they are to perfect.

I noticed when you were reviewing the song No Regrets. The song you were listening to was the Cantonese version, the lyrics of which were written by Albert Leung (林夕), one of the most accomplished professional lyricists in Canto-pop. But the translation you read was translated from the Mandarin that’s written by Faye Wong herself. Faye recorded both versions in her album. It would be interesting if you could compare the two versions (the music is identical).

I am glad you do review of Faye Wong’s music. she is really the best of the best of Chinese pop music. She is the epitome; all these years have passed, no other pop singers, female or male, in China compare to her. A true legend. As some other commentators pointed out, the top 5 songs are more mainstream and public-favorite among her works. She has way more diversity of music genre to impress you. Looking forward to your review of her other alternative great songs. I just recommend one: Bi An Hua (彼岸花) from her 2000 album Fable. This album is also phenomenal. I believe we all had almost the same feeling when we listened to "Blinded without Regrets": a warm electric current mixed with body-like comfort and goosebumps shivering - it's the ultimate enjoyment in the world, I feeling lucky to have someone feel the same way. It has an inexplicable magic that seems to go beyond music theory or trend analysis, it seems to be natural and unartificial. The first time I listened to "Blinded without Regrets" was when I was 5 years old in my father's car and went on a family outing. Maybe it was a natural fate. At that time, I remembered this charming melody, and I love it to this day. In other words, this song was part of what shaped my upbringing, it was one of the pillars that I went through under all the emotions.
@秦思远-l4l2 жыл бұрын
Faye Wong is a Buddhist - she has a lot of Buddhist songs, and I believe it is because of this that this calmness and peace of mind is revealed in all of her songs. After studying in America in 1991, Faye Wong was influenced by many musicians such as bjork, kate bush, cocteau twins, the cranberries, etc. For example, the pronunciation technique of track 4 "Dying Inside" in the cranberries' album Wake Up And Smell The Coffee is very similar to that of Faye Wong; in the album Milk & Kisses track 11 "Serpentskirt" is a collaboration between Faye Wong and cocteau twins, and the lyrics "Love you" "as the only low point, the part bears the nostalgic hometown in the whole dream. Although the development of Chinese music is very short-lived and immature, there are not many musicians who can be named even in fantasy pop and trip hop. But Faye Wong is probably the closest to the top among them.
@秦思远-l4l2 жыл бұрын
The suggestion commented by WL Lee above is great, Faye Wong can't sort by the number of plays, she is a singer who deserves to comb through all the albums. "寓言" and "浮躁" are albums not to be missed. On the basis of his, I just add two more suggestions: 1) 1996 album (浮躁) track 9 (末日) 2) 1997 album (王菲) track 2 (你快乐所以我快乐)

In addition, I would also like to recommend the album "冀西南林路行" to be released by 万能青年旅店 in 2020. I believe that a lot of chinese fans have already recommended this prog-rock band to you. They have reached the pinnacle of China's new era rock in ten years with only two albums, if you also prefer prog-rock then a lot of them are rich and complex The instrumental arrangement will not disappoint you, and they have also borrowed a lot from King crimson. I really hope you can evaluate the whole album, because it is a continuous concept album like "the dark side of the moon" , and I haven't found a very professional musical evaluation and reaction in youtube or bilibili. I'm really looking forward to a live stream or video about this album, I love your music reviews from the bottom of my heart, thank you for your continued efforts!
