Tom you have no idea how frustrating it can be for the owner to see their dog do whatever you want after 2 years of not listening. But same time it is uplifting to know nothing is wrong and it is fixable. This one looks like a smart sweetheart, all needed is the right directions.

My relationship with my dog (who has isolation distress) has been in tatters for several months now. I tried applying the positive reinforcement training with him and, while it would work for a bit, he would have days afterwards where his symptoms came back full force. It's only been a couple of days and I've been applying your tips into our training and I can tell he's improving. He's more confident, relaxed, and isn't glued to my side 24/7. With time and consistency, I'm sure he'll recover. Thank you and keep up the good work!

Thanks Tom. It is also useful for many dogs that the owners do every day some drills with them developing new skills. I have also found out a simple thing for a problematic dog. Play every day with him. Do some play he likes so that he really enjoys being with you and strengthens the relation. it is really useful for both of you.

I think this was actually the best video you've made. The description of how the anxious/scared dog behaves and how to respond to it was spot on. This used to be my Blue Nose a few years ago. Put him on a slip lead and dove into dog behavior. The guy is so relaxed now, nothing phases him. Only comment is I think using the word punishment will turn way to many people off. I think using the word discipline is best because that's what you're actually offering - discipline and structure.

I love that Lakota is so highly trained that she is an asset to your business. She allows for a reliable, level headed distraction that makes for great confidence building in nervous dogs. Since watching Tom’s videos I have employed balanced trading with my (4lb) dog. The result is that she is far more in tune with me, less distracted, more obedient, more reliable. My treat bag has become redundant and now when we go out we take a ball and a slip collar. Food is only used as training for new skills as it’s better for luring. 90% of the time I use voice inflection to reward and to correct, 5% is positive punishment and 5% is getting a ball out to break and reward. The biggest thing Tom has changed in my relationship with my dog is that voice inflection for both praise and punishment is hugely important. I was saying too much to my dog. (Which Tom re-emphasised in this video.) Sometimes less is more. Thanks Tom as always!

Lily, you got that exactly right. I joined a training club to give my dog positive experiences with other dogs. She still reacts to the butt sniffers but that only happens if the owner gets distracted, and 2 dogs of some 25 will bother her. They seem to be permanently on her bad side now.

Thank you for this video. All the trainers around me poo poo prong collars, but I have a dog that is exactly like this guy and charges people that come in the house. (We rescued her at almost 2 so we’re fighting her past) after watching this, I bought a Sprenger collar and she’s no longer like fighting a marlin on a hook. She’s under control and can focus on what I’m asking of her. She’s not going to love people in her space, but she’s now respecting the rules without flailing around like a wild thing. 🙌🏻

Just want to say you've completely changed my view of prong collars. I wish everyone who uses them would watch your vids, since there still definitely too many people who use them incorrectly. I've previously trained my dogs with all positive, treat-based reinforcement. It does work for a lot of things but I found myself struggling to communicate with my new, slightly fearful rescue dog. Just started watching your videos this past week. She was play biting like crazy and just a few quick corrections with a slip lead, along with a few treats and she's so much better already. Right now we're working on her reactivity with my 3 year old. This is especially challenging when the 3 year old tries to "help", or purposefully antagonizes her...but I think we'll get there. Thanks so much for your work!!

Thank you for addressing how much you say to your dog as well as how the lady was praising the dog at the sit. When you get that exciting tone in your voice and vigorously rub his face, you are setting your dog up to come out of the sit you just asked for and in doing so are setting him up to fail. I think it was great the lady did that though because it was a great opportunity for Tom to teach not only her, but others watching this video! Great job everyone!

I also loved how relaxed and calm the dog was compared to his frenzied demeanor at the beginning. This dog was desperately looking for someone to take the wheel. Been watching a lot of your videos this week as I have a reactive(?) 10-month old Aussie/Lab mix that growls/barks at other people, dogs, and new situations. He has not bitten anyone or another dog (yet) but he does scare them with his bark or lunging at the harness. Admittedly, his socialization has not been great, given the COVID isolation this past year. Mind you, he is good with the spouse and me, along with our 7-year old Rotty/Chow-chow mix (who is a 100 lb. teddy bear with all people and animals). With our past dogs (3) over the last 25 years, I have used a choke collar but did not want to use it on this dog as I wanted to use nothing but positive reinforcement. However, your positive punishment approach makes sense to me as that is essentially what a mama dog does with her pups. Also, your use of the Sprenger collar makes sense and does not look at all abusive (and it looks less harmful than a choke collar). I do believe I'm going to give it a whirl before the situation gets worse. Thanks for the videos.
@lillieberger2883

Forget the harness, they pull more when on a harness. Use a Sprenger prong collar, not the generic cheap ones from the pet store. Watch Toms videos on using one to teach the heel.
@michaelquillen2679
@michaelquillen2679 3 жыл бұрын
Update, been having a hard time trying to find a genuine Sprenger collar. However, I did get a slip lead collar and put it up high on the neck, behind the ears. OMG, what a difference! It was like he immediately started looking at me for guidance after the first time I gave it a pop. For example, I took him to the vet yesterday, and at his first growl at another dog, I gave that collar a gentle pop, along with a disapproving sound, and he immediately stopped and look at me. I gave him a "leave it" command and he just backed off and sat down....like he does when I tell him to "leave it" with a toy. May not need a Sprenger collar if things keep going well. Nevertheless, thank you to Upstate Canine Academy for letting me know that a dog who doesn't know what to do in a certain situation will act like a dog (bark, growl, lunge) if not given another firm, but gentle, guidance/reminder to perform another action by someone the dog feels is in charge.

My vet recommended putting a martingale collar on my male Aussie puppy at 4 months - not because there was a problem, she said i would have better control and be able to correct appropriate for his age. If i started now i would far less problems later on. She also recommended i join a rally obedience club. Dodger’s obedience was great but not at what he was not supposed to do. I am not frustrated anymore and we can go anywhere because he is learning manners and he is a delight to be around. He is only 5 months now and we go to outdoor patios and people shower him with attention and he remains well behaved even though there are always lots of other dogs around. People ask how i got so lucky to have such calm Aussie and i tell them check out Tom at upstate canine. This is not luck it was fun hard work and i am excited for what is come with him. Aussies need lots of physical exercise as well as mental stimulation. We do urban agility which is lots of fun and any dog can do it. I also got some agility equipment and people from my dog park come and practice with us. In my puppy club we are also doing scent work and you can also do that in your house or yard. Herding balls are amazing for Aussies. Aussies usually require a lot time and consistency - they are dogs that like to work with their owner.

SAVE MY DOG!!!!! Hi, my dog is a Dogo Argentino female. She is 3 years old and has been a huge part of our family ever since we adopted her. She has always had aggression problems with strangers and other dogs (has a biting history) but never really with us.But as of recent she has started to become aggressive with me, she has bit me 2 times in the last 3 weeks (one on the left side of my face, one on the throat). My mom has been really scared after this particular event as she nearly killed me and is considering euthanization. This deeply breaks my heart and I have been struggling with the thought of it. I have been looking all over the internet trying to find solutions/advice and getting two different perspectives, the dog can be fixed, the dog can’t be fixed. I please ask if anyone knows some trainers or people that are willing to take on an aggressive dog and give her a chance to survive. She is a good dog at heart but just has some mental issues. I just want my dog to be okay and don’t want to lose her. My family has decided not to keep her, against my wishes, but does not want to give her up to a shelter as we know she is too aggressive and will be put down right away, we are also struggling to look at rehoming and do not want to give someone else that gruelling responsibility if they are not prepared for it. If anyone knows any rescue services or someone with a history of dealing with extreme cases of aggression that could help her or take her Please respond ASAP, as I only have a week to save her. I am praying for a miracle at this point and come here out of desperation. Please anyone with some help or info I live in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) I will be checking this comment frequently, I just want to save my girl. All ideas are welcomed.

Amazing! Another great success story with the prong collar! My neighbor has purchased some kind of prong collar that isn't the HS and I'm concerned it's not going to be helpful. Do you have a video that really compares the HS with other prong collars?

Tom, Thank you for your videos and wisdom! I’ve been watching for a video with a case like this! I’m in this same situation with my boy, but he gives no warning...just if someone approaches him, he bites and cowers. No barking or growling... just a slight lowering of the head which people who don’t know him will never notice. We’ve socialized him as much as we could, we work with him, he’s muzzle trained, we have the Herman springer like you recommended, he can place between my legs when on walks and someone approaches for his safety and theirs. He’s great on a leash, he’s the perfect dog...until we aren’t watching and someone approaches him or reaches for him without announcing themself, then there’s no time to react/correct him. One more bite and our baby will have to be put down! 😩 we’ve had 2 trainers evaluate him and they both said it’s fear based, but he was perfectly fine with them and we are already doing all the recommend. How do you train him when he’s non-reactive with anybody who speaks dog? It seems it’’s the people who don’t “speak dog” that he has a problem with. Any advice?

What would the progression of training for this case be to transitioning off of the prong? E-collar?
@bonezzzz6330
@bonezzzz6330 3 жыл бұрын
I think the goal is to use the prong collar till the behavior disappears and you get to a point where the dog no longer needs the corrections. E-collar is probably the last step if this didnt work. Prong collars are the best to use if you are fair with your corrections.
