Lakota is stuck like glue. Competition heels are so impressive. Nice work as always Tom, demonstrating with the prong off toward the end just shows that balanced training really does work. No matter how many treats you ram down their neck it’s not gonna work without boundaries and corrections.

Since I started using a Herm Sprenger, my GSD sees me get it and goes nuts, knowing we are about to train, go to Lowe’s or to the walking trail for an outing. She’s a totally different dog when in prong “work mode” and you can see the confidence she projects in her walk. It’s like she can hand the reins over to me to be in charge and she can just relax and accept the “beautiful dog” comments we always get. She’s certainly not anywhere near as good at home, off leash, but she’s only a year and has a lot of learning to do. Thank you Tom! I love these videos that reinforce the proper use and timing of the prong and the correct commands. I’ve done all our training using your videos and am so grateful!

Great video. One thing I wish all dog owners could see from this video is the difference between how the subject dog was with her owners and how Lakota is with you. The attention Lakota pays to you is what dog owners should be working towards. It's perfectly okay to let your dogs just be dogs and do their thing. However, there are times when you need them to be focused on you and making you a priority. That skill can literally save their (the dog's) life. Good job as always, Tom!

I am sure glad they came to get Tom's help. The constant pressure she was putting on the leash was hard to watch. Everything she did was done with tension. I wonder if that was taught to her by "positive only" trainers? Because I think some of the dogs anxiety stems from the fact that no matter what the dog does he/she never got the release of pressure. Good on the owners for searching out other methods rather than sticking with positive only training because in another 6 months this dog would likely have some pretty severe reactivity. Insanity is continuing to do the same thing over and over again yet expecting a different result. Glad they decided to try balanced training with Tom!

@@kimleger8824 i use food almost exclusively for luring dogs into positions. Id much rather heavily rely on praise and some toys. I like to keep the dog engaged with ME rather than with the reward. The challenge with bullies is that they tend to be less motivated and praise alone in their eyes is a much lower payment than with other types of dogs. I find when teaching a new command to bullies getting them amped up with a little play first helps a ton. It drastically increases motivation and engagement.

Hey Tom, I recently bought a German Shepherd puppy from a breeder, at the End of January and he’s 4 months of age now, and for a puppy he is a very good boy I’m not too sure but I think he comes from a Working line of shepherd so I know mental stimulation is key giving him a task or a job to do is very important and I try my best to do so with daily training and a good bit of exercise, I haven’t been able to socialize him too much and I know he’s at a critical socialization period. But he just got out the hospital for Parvo so I’m not taking him to a park or anything like that for a little while to make sure I don’t endanger anyone else’s dog. But the breeder told me that his father was very Aggressive by nature, now he’s not aggressive with other animals, but he’s very reactive as a puppy towards humans and animals when it comes to barking and I know the difference between his playful and serious bark and he seriously barks at a lot of people when he first sees them he’s been like this since The first day I got him. And I’m just wondering what steps I should take from this day forward because eventually I am looking into getting him esa approved and I need to make sure I can properly control him and keep him relaxed at all times. x

This video is such a saving grace for me. I have a leash aggressiv German heeler mix and he is a strong boy. I'm currently trying to correct him by putting him in a down and standing on the leash, keeping him close/ impairing his movement and ability to get to the dog and it's kinda working but this is better. I will try to get a prong soon even though they are hard to get in my country. First shout-out to the #Michiganders Hi neighbors! It is true this channel shows many GSDs however; the reason for that is GSDs Belgians and Dutch were bred for the characteristics we see here. The problem is a non-working or non-competition handler often gets surprised when their majestic dog starts behaving like a nut job. Tom is one of the very best in the business when it comes to correctly assessing and teaching how to modify behavior. L O V E this multi-tool approach❤👍

As always great 👌 I’m working with my 8month old pup with reactivity towards dogs in general. I tried with positive reinforcement, but it’s not doing anything really. It ended up with my dog learning that when there is dog somewhere when I’m scattering food, so instead of eating it he starts to look where the dog is. I’ve been subscribed to another dog trainer and behaviourist - strictly positive and tried following her instructions but yeah... I feel like it got worse actually. To the point of scaring people and them asking me if my puppy bites 🤦🏻‍♀️ some of her ideas are great, but I can’t put up with some of her stuff. Like stating that tugging the leash to get some control over the dog is destroying relationship with the dog. Tugging, not snapping or yanking or whatever. Or latest, that left me gaping - that prong collar is not a training tool, that supposedly 95% of the dogs are pulling on the leash to get away from the owner, because it’s scared of him/her, that the owner is associated with pain So after 2 months of trying to convince my dog to listen and calm down with treats, all it took was a one well placed and clear correction. I didn’t even need a prong. Sure he still is getting agitated, but I can get him back to me in a second. I don’t know why I didn’t do this in the first place, it worked with cars and bikes before. I think they got to me, positive reinforcement guys are damn persuasive, they know how to hit in the conscience So I want to say I’m sorry to You and to my dog, I’ll be good now 😝

I'm not Tom, but I do use a prong. I always keep my prong on my boy when we go on walks. He's smart enough to know when he's not wearing it and will pull through a choke chain, martingale collar, and a flat collar (I tried transitioning him down from a prong -> choke chain -> martingal) He used to be pretty dog reactive (we've been seeing a local trainer and doing a lot of work) and only the prong can get him to refocus on me. The prong also allows for "power steering" on my walks, I can have him loose-leash walking and barely move the leash and he will listen. You also never know what will happen on walks and I like to always have control of my own dog in any situation. My trainer also keeps prongs on his fully trained working dogs for the same reason. Hopefully, that kinda answers your question.

But I love your videos and by watching you has given me the confidence with my own dog and I’m starting my dog training course with the Animal Behavior College. I’m excited to start and I really want some success and help dogs and hopefully in the future more than juts dogs! Thanks for all you do

Advice would be look into the most current research on animal behavior and learning, and not following any of this since that goes against that.

We have just got ourselves a Turkish Kangal and are trying the slip lead on him as New Zealand (where we are) is basically against prong collars. It's uphill work. I find it very hard to get him to engage when working. He engages perfectly when not working!!!

I wonder if it would help the owners using the prong collar, to hear that, if the dog is pulling on it, then it's too late to make a correction.

you just need to create leverage, you can give a correction even if the dog is already pulling

German Shepherd require a strong, firm but fair leader. You need help. A dog enters a socialization period between three and four months of age. It is critical during that time that they are exposed to different people and situations in order to become well socialized and balanced. You may want to find yourself a puppy obedience class.

I will take all the GSD videos lol! When I finally get a dog they are my breed of choice so I'm just trying to learn as much as I can about them before hand while I have way too much time on my hands. 😂

The most important things for a GSD are leadership, exercise/mental stimulation and training. I have been involved in GSD rescue for over 20 years. They can read your body language and energy very well. For this reason, it is important to project confidence and leadership. A dogs will know if you are faking it.

Highly recommend looking into actual positive reinforcement training then instead of whatever this claims to be. R+ is scientifically backed, while his methods are not.

Is there a video for help with reactivity with neighbor dogs through shared fences? Old neighbors ankle biters were a pain that would break through into my side, so now my Aussie is reactive especially to that side of the fence. There’s new neighbors now with a husky and my dog is being the barker 😑there’s other dogs on the other two sides of the fence too but they mind each other and carry on. It’s just that side that the ankle biters used to live on

Hi! I watch your videos and have a question! I have 2 dogs and one off them is adopted, she is insecure and I try to work on the basics like engagement with me. But she doesn't want to walk without the other dog, or do anything. It looks like she is more 'engaged' with our other dog then with us. Do you have any tips? I try to take her on walks alone but she just doesn't wanna move or when I wanna practice with her alone in our garden, she just wants to go inside.

Hi Tom, just listened your the latest podcast and you were talking about this video and prong collar you used. You have promised your customer to send the link where to get a good prong collar you use yourself. Please if you have a moment send me this link as well. After your podcasts I am thinking to get one for my dog. Just using the opportunity, I want to thank you for so much valuable information you sharing here on KZbin and also on your podcasts! Thank you so much, you are amazing! Also, if there any chance you can do a podcast on Confidence boost for dog, I listen to your suggestions with ecollar, but maybe you have ideas for improvement self confidence with games, training where tools are not involved? All the best, mate!

When I ask my dog to sit or down, how long should I allow for her to do the command. My dog does the command but does it slowly, while looking ar me like as if she is thinking do I have to? Should I do the correction? I tell her good sit or good down when she does the command. I have had her checked to make sure its not a physical issue but she is perfectly healthy. (I adopted her at around 5 months of age)

That dog is super smart. The way she tried to figure out what to do initially with the owner’s. They applied pressure the entire time, which frustrates the dog. There’s no, yes that’s good. No that’s bad

Question: Has there ever been an older shepherd that has been introduced to the pronged collar that has graduated away from it ?? This 4 yr. old male king shepherd and my 9 month old female german shepherd have close to perfect behavior with the prongs but instantly regress back to their reckless leash pulling with out it. I have only had these dogs for 17 days now, today was day # 3 of pronged collar training
@futuredog1084
@futuredog1084 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe you could have the prong collar on with a handle/traffic lead so you can still correct and have the main leash on collar or something. But if you need to using a prong collar isn't bad even if you can't switch to a normal as its safer then flat collars. Or you can try a martingale collar so it has the same slip part of the correction just not as effective.
@roboearthling7856
@roboearthling7856 3 жыл бұрын
@@futuredog1084 thanks for the reply, the pronged collar works perfect, I have only raised a dog from a 10 week old puppy and never had this issue, I live in a Northern Canadian tiny town, my dog park is 1 mile squared and not another dog in sight, just coyotes, deer, moose, elk, bear and the odd wolf, these two dogs only have issues with this wild life and other dogs, but if you say the pronged collar is safer and more effective, then this is what it will have to be for the rest of their lives, today is the end of week 3, Training two dogs at once is crazy at times but things are slowly progressing, thank you for your help

Yeah Victoria Shitwell always suggests the "gentle" leader or cutting the dog's balls off but she's completely against prongs and e-collars. Then people see her show and actually think she is a good dog trainer. It's cringe really.

@@fredalmeida8170 When I was seven years old I was obsessed with Victoria and tried to use her purely positive bs and a halter on my first dog, and he was an absolute disaster. the Halter terrified him so much that he refused to even walk on a leash after, had to be off-leash to even try going on a walk, and had no recall unless food was involved. I had no control over that dog without a handful of treats, same for every other dog I've tried to be positive-only with.
