Saw this last night and was really touched by his hard-headed ‘against the grain’ approach to music and life. Had to revisit this morning, this will definitely be my mood going forward.

I was one of the 20 persons who bought the first Aphex Twin release and I was so proud to play it in my DJ sets (even if it did not "fit" in so well at that time). LUV R&S.

EB.TV #28 - 16.09.2014 When Renaat Vandepapeliere and Sabine Maes started R&S Records in 1984, no one could have guessed at the time that it would go on to develop in to one of the most important labels for electronic music. CJ Bolland, Jaydee, Aphex Twin, Joey Beltram, Model 500, James Blake and Lone are just a few of the artists who have left their mark on the label's sound over the years. For this installment of Slices on Electronic Beats TV, we traveled to Ghent in Belgium and sat down for a chat with charismatic label boss Renaat Vandepapeliere, where he opened up to us about his philosophy both for his label and his life. RENAAT VANDEPAPELIERE / R&S RECORDS (Slices Feature)

I always thought that R&S records was a strange label. Sometimes super quality tracks, even really amazing ones like for example the Quadrant E.P. (Basic Channel), more often nothing special and even sometimes very bad tracks, (I think of the Dominator). I had the feeling they had no particular vision or style, you never knew what to expect it was always different and I thought that the good tracks were just coinsidences. Really great contrast between the quality of releases. After seeing this interview I am starting to understand why... What I don't understand is that Renaat says that he won't release tracks that have a reference point with another label, there are lots of releases and artists on R&S I think that were first released on other labels: JayDee, Quadrant, Human Resource, Phuture, Dave Angel, etc etc.

Hmmm Robert .. you can't compare the 80t & 90t when we released Jaydee etc .. and indeed we licensed some tunes from other labels then . No vision, i wouldn't say so .. the vision is taking a lot of risk. I am talking about when R&S started again around 2006 after my long sabbatical. Did we release bad tunes , possible, every label does :) Sometimes labels try .. and mistakes are part of life in general. One love Ren

I'm just exploring the whole spectrum of R&S and I'd have to agree that the whole 'thing' of this label is the fact that it's so off the hook. It's a great thing that you let creativity and music do their thing, whether people would like it or not, in the end it's the artists and labels that believe in their own way and vision that stand above the mass.. And just having experienced a Paula Temple gig, I have to say: it still does bigtime !

My experience with R&S is different. There was a time that they released a new records every week. Cutting edge and differentating from the other labels. New R&S records i always checked them out when there was new arrival.

The difference is that in the 80s and 90s there was some kind of filter meaning that only the really good music was put on vinyl by the record labels because of the inherent cost related to vinyl pressings. A record label listened to maybe 12 tracks (oftentimes plenty more) and picked only one for release. Nowadays everything is being uploaded without any filter or third party moderation so the really good new tracks are being submerged in a sea of mediocrity.

As someone who had a record store in the 90s, I have to disagree. Even in the 90s there was a lot of junk on vinyl and only a fraction of the releases were really good. But it’s all a matter of taste too.

Maybe you are right. But like you say. It's all a matter of taste I guess. Des goûts et des couleurs, on ne discute pas... Your record store wasn't USA Import by any chance? @@ElectronicBeatsTV
