That suggested speed of 18 was put up in the early 80's. Long before the new motors with the great working jake brakes.

Drove that hill many of times in all weather conditions where it was open with weights of 34,000 to 80,000 lbs. I never would go that fast down that hill. I was passed plenty of times by trucks that did however. Weather and road conditions permitting, I did not descend that grade at a speed faster than one where my engine brake could not maintain my speed or slow me down. Or over about 55 mph max on any part of It. The older and more experienced I got, the less desire I had to run down that hill fast.
@MetalTeamster7 жыл бұрын
Thank you A R . You are a lonely voice of reason. It is my opinion , that set of triples should have dropped one gear, ran the jake all the way down and kept it at or below 50 mph. Even that is a bit fast for what the old time veteran teamster drivers 30-40 years ago would have run.

I came very close to in 1995. Went to the academy in Shelton, Wa . They wanted me to join the cadet class at that time. But I love trucking too much. Or , should I say, what it used to be.

Fed Ex has changed..they were governed back, I was a OTR driver when Dallas had that big ice storm about 8 years ago, and this dumb Fed Ex driver going I don't know how fast, passed me and pulled my truck towards him. I got on the CB and told him he better slow down that this road was a hazard. He told me I was a hazard going so slow. Went down about 20 miles more and started seeing some box's on the road and a couple of hundred feet more there he was sitting in the ditch petting his trailer on his side. I asked if he was okay and he was...but then I had to tell him see I told you so, he said fu and I told him no I did not have time that I had some where to go. Sorry I am a smart butt woman trucker and proud of it!

So you chose to engage in an unsafe act to document the same unsafe act? So now instead of one idiot running off the hill too fast, we now have two? What could possibly go wrong with this brainstorm? Makes me wonder who the real danger is here. If you truly have 2M/32 years under your belt, (which is highly suspect after watching this idiocy) haven't you learned by now to just let the guy go? If this offends your commitment to safety so much, why didn't you notify FedEx at a minimum or better yet, the Oregon State Police?Also, the 18 mph speed limit you keep harping about is for 75-80,000 lb trucks. Do you have any way of knowing what this guy's weight was? He could be running empty for all you know. Granted, the driver is over the 55 for trucks limit, but depending on the gross weight, the driver isn't obligated to the 18 mph limit either.Maybe next time you witness unsafe or dangerous behavior, you'll actually do something about it instead of being a sneaky little rat.
@MetalTeamster9 жыл бұрын
+Shaun Cason - You are correct, I am sneaky. I am a rat. I got my license 6 months ago and I have 20,000 miles of exp. I think the truck was empty, he weighed maybe 30 pounds. You are also correct, there were two idiots running down the hill. You are right all accounts, I suggest you go buy a lottery ticket because you are so fuckin smart, you can win every time !

Trailers also could of been empty. 90,000 at the absolute max. Trailer weights vary.
@MetalTeamster8 жыл бұрын
This fellow was down to 30 mph on a 6% incline 20 some miles before going down this hill. These were not empty trailers and this was before Oregon raised the speed limit to 65. This was a 55 zone.

I would not describe it as that. He violated the posted speed limit at that time, and put he and his Corporation in a position of potential liability. Trucking is not a race, despite what people like you choose to believe.

So you'll call out FedEx for breaking the law, yet you're breaking multiple laws yourself. you have no idea what kind of weight he's carrying. for all you know, he's got 3 empty trailers. What company do you drive for? Maybe they'd like to know that you're driving unsafely yourself there, supertrucker...
@MetalTeamster8 жыл бұрын
I made the statement that I was breaking the law. Very observant of you. No, that set of triples was bogged down to 25 mph on the hill coming up out of the bottom of the hill just West of La Grande. He was close to 100,000 gvw. I was empty. Either way, we were both speeding.
@Jetmech17818 жыл бұрын
+MetalTeamster First of all, max gvw in Oregon is 80,000 lbs, regardless of single, double, or triple trailers. Second, FedEx trucks are governed to 65 MPH, so pulling even a small hill, you lose speed. Why don't you worry about driving your truck and let the other driver drive his.
