I make $100k a year and my fiance makes $80k a year. We left our hometown 7 years ago because lack of opportunity and it being unaffordable. Moved to a metro area 3x my income and 2x hers. We cannot afford to buy a home like one we grew up in with our middle class families. The supply is far too low. We cannot start a family in an $1800/month 700sq foot 1 bed apt. We are at the point where we feel that money, the economy and the falsehood of the American dream is weighing on us heavily, daily. Its unobtainable now and we're convinced it may never be within reach for us again. We are slowly giving up.

When 2020 happened and the IRS started sending out bailout checks, I saw the writing on the wall. I knew in the years to come that inflation would soon follow after introducing a large spike of new cash into the economy. Over the rest of 2020 I cut my spending severely, and focused all my financial efforts towards paying off any outstanding debt, expecting that interest rates would with time start going up. Sure enough, here we are. Rates will keep going up, but that's okay because I'm debt free for years now and have been saving not spending. Not going out to restaurants, spending way less on alcohol and pre-made meals. I shopped around for cheaper car insurance, a better phone plan, lowered my home internet plan, started being more savvy in every category. Now even with my rent going up almost every 9mo, and food going up in cost, I'm still doing better than ever. I only expect the macroeconomic situation to get worse in the coming 6-18mo. If you haven't paid off your debts, if you're still spending the same as you were in 2020, it's time to wake up. Do it now or you will be set back financially for a very long time to come.
