When our daughter died in January, we were so grateful for the meals our church family and friends brought. It's so hard to think about food when you're planning a funeral. I'm sure that your friends loved the Cottage pie. I'm proud of you for stepping out of your comfort zone.

If all parents raised their children this way, with love and structure and gentle discipline this world would be a different place... A much better place, children are meant to be raised by 2 parents, 2 parents that work together.. Without toxic dysfunction, no violence... These children will go on to be great!!!!

Who said their discipline is gentle? Did you know that in order to get families to work together and obey it takes real discipline? Discipline for all involved. That house would be a mad house if they didn't have strict rules and schedules.

Not everyone has the possibility to raise their children with 2 parents Single moms do their best to raise their children the right way with just one parent. Unfortunately life doesn’t always work the way we planned it.

Cooking is definitely Jamerrill’s gift. When people are in need of a meal I don’t think they’re too picky. Their minds are on grieving a loss or celebrating a baby and they just need sustenance. Baked spaghetti in any form, chicken/broccoli/rice casserole, veggie soup, beef stew, beef or chicken chili … I have a lot of ‘go to’ meals. I always send jello or cookies and I put things in dishes that don’t need to be returned.

I'd like to say thank you for the vegetarian Mexican casserole recipe! I'm a single childless woman (so lifestyle couldn't be more different) but it still works great for me because it freezes well in meal prep containers and I just bring it to the office for lunch. Unbelievably cheap, easy, tasty, and reasonably healthy.

When I was younger and able, I always tried to keep several casseroles (tator tot, baked spaghetti, cottage pie, Alfredo pasta) in freezer for emergencies (ours or another family in need). The tator tot casserole was generally what was chosen by others when given an option.

When we take food we go to Costco and either buy 10 different pizzas, bagged salad, dessert. Pizza leftover hot or cold is always good. Sometimes I buy the papa Murphy take and bake that way they can heat them whenever they choose. When my grandfather passed all of us adult cousins ditched the elders and company (after saying hello) took 4 pizzas that someone brought and sat in an upstairs bedroom all over watched a tiny tv and visited about 10 of us adults and a couple of our kids. That was our best memories of a time of loss. So that is why I alway do pizzas!

It seems like Peace started walking one day and was zooming around all over the place the next! (I'm sure Seth helped with that last part.) Sarah, you already know the sort of food to take in a bereavement: anything that can easily be reheated. Plus something sweet. If you have a great recipe for Red Velvet cake, you're golden. A completely decadent pound cake works, too. You're not trying for something healthy, you're trying for something so good it momentarily takes their minds off the fact that they've lost a loved one and their lives are changed because of it. Honey, that calls for sugar and butter and lots of it.

Thinking back to the meals people brought me post baby, and we were grateful for every single one of them. Even the take and bake pizza with bagged salad was perfect. The best was a roasted chicken and veggies a friend brought since it was nice to eat something a bit "healthier" after a few casseroles. Also one friend sent over a bag of snacks and easy kids snacks and meals like easy mac. It was really nice to have something simple to feed my oldest.

Meals are such a great way to minister to people! My church always does a meal train for people when there is a birth, a death, a surgery, or some other huge life event. Over the course of 11 years with 5 births I can think of very few meals we didn't like. Food is food! If you are hesitant about it, I would suggest something like taco fixings - everyone can make their own and not worry about putting on things they don't like! One of my favorite meals to have received over the years 😁

I watch Jamerrill too! You are ranked right there with her in my opinion! Don't second guess yourself, you have been cooking for your crowd for a very long time and they all love it. Peace and the mashed potatoes was adorable especially when she held out her hand and wanted more!! Chicken Turkey or Beef pot pies are a wonderful dinner idea for a family and a wonderful winter meal also a good hearty stew either beef or vegetable with some of your homemade bread. Also I have made baked spaghetti along with garlic bread. I have also made a ham potatoe broccoli and cheese casserole. I always seem to end up going with a casserole or soup with bread and a salad is a great choice. You and Solo are an amazing team and seem to really balance each other out all around with cooking, work, home, children and ministry work!!

I’ve also used half hamburger, half ground turkey, if turkey is cheaper. I also try to stretch things…making 6 casseroles, make 4 servings of the meat mixture, then decide it amongst the six. If you can add anything veggie to stretch it a little, if it got mashed potatoes on top, make one or two extra batches and spread it amongst the six. You wouldn’t hear me complain about more mashed potatoes!

Hi Sarah, we have been living in two houses as well. My husband is serving as interim pastor at a church in Blacksburg VA. We have moved our necessities into the parsonage, but not completely moved until the time we are moved from interim to Pastor. That should be in August. Last August the board made him the offer as interim and said it would be for a year. It is hard going between 2 homes. We did finally move my office and that has been a huge blessing. Not as much traveling to and fro.

Substituting some of the ground beef in the cottage pie with home cooked or canned lentils (brown or green) would be an easy substitution to decrease the amount of meat and lower the cost without losing the protein content. I do a 50/50 mix with ground meat and lentils for Ragu with great results as lentils don't have much flavour on their own and the texture isn't disruptive to the ground meat texture either

I sometimes send sandwich makings for late night eating if they could not eat at dinner from stress. I was very grateful when the village brought our family food. I am from Louisiana but have lived outside of the south for several years. Whenever I bring other people meals, I always bring seafood gumbo. Like you, I used to be worried that other people wouldn’t like it since it is traditionally Cajun and a little bit of a unique flavor/texture. But almost every single time, people compliment it and are grateful. All that to say that you shouldn’t overthink whether people will enjoy your gifted meals. In my experience, the receiver is thankful for the gift and the opportunity to try something new and different.

I have two "go to" meals that I resort to when making a meal for someone else. The first one is called "Farmhouse chicken". I got it off of someones personal website that does not exist anymore. I can email it to you if you would like...but in a nutshell, it is chicken pot pie filling with prepared stuffing mix spread over the top and baked. It is delicious. The second is just your basic mild chili con carne casserole (just put the chili in a 13x9 dish...make sure it's not too liquidy), with cheese and green onions on top....with a big pan of corn bread. They are both simple and people usually love it. Occasionally, I will make the chili casserole without the beans, depending upon the likes and dislikes of the family I'm making it for. I love to watch your chaos....makes me feel better about mine!!

The Sheperds Pie was perfect Sarah! I've taken lunch meat tray, cheese tray, condiments, rolls to a family. I made a cinnamon coffee cake to take a family with small tub of butter. My Husband made 3 large pizzas, medium bread sticks with cheese, marinara sauce, large salad ranch dressing & 2-2 litre sodas to take to my friends. When Mom died in Pennsylvania, a neighbor made us blueberry muffins, a neighbor brought Dad a huge beef roast. In Virginia, when Moms funeral was over, instead of everyone coming to the house, the Church here in Virginia had the family go to the fellowship hall, the people prepared all kinds of delicious foods. Anyone could come after the funeral to eat & be with the family. Everyone cleaned up & took their dishes home with them. I think that's nice & easier on the family. I try to get disposable pans when I can.

I love watching what's for dinner....it gives me ideas. I have not made shepherds pie in years. Tomorrow I'm doing corned beef, sweet potatoes, brussel sprouts, mushrooms, carrots and onions in crockpot. I've never used sweet potatoes with it so we will see how everyone likes them

I identify with you when needing to take a meal to a family: likes/ dislikes, allergies, preferences, non-dairy, non-gluten, lo-cal, texture, and on and on. When I sign up at church to help out, now I send a gift card so the family can order out !! Thanks for being a KZbin friend. Keep up the good work !!
