I'm 22, hearing that people poked fun at Christine for using the word "bestie" really pissed me off. I don't think at this point that it's so much of an age or generational thing to use certain slang, I think "bestie" is more of an internet thing so it makes total sense that it would become part of her vocabulary. People are just being rude and they're trying to hide it by sounding cutesy. I'm over it

Aside from this, ironic use happened before Gen Z was old enough to know the term (early 2000s), although maybe not as prevalent (such as saying, "Okay, bestie." when mad/annoyed at a friend. I was a highschool dropout who was adapted to a life of poverty and escapism (alcohol, drugs, gaming). I'm 32 now and I just graduated university with a degree in microbiology (honours, distinction). It took me 2 years of academic upgrading just to qualify to apply for university and I was a decade older than most of my peers. I didn't have many friends and couldn't relate to my fellow students much, but I absolutely loved my education and I'm so proud of myself for doing it, even when I found it very difficult. People in my life constantly pressured me to figure out a path and what I'm going to do next in life; in fact, they still do. I tell myself the same thing now that I wish I told my younger self: It's okay to take one step at a time and see where you end up. If you don't like where you find yourself, redirect and keep going. Life is and will always be an ongoing journey, but you don't need a destination to be within sight to keep going.

I think getting an education is one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself. No, it’s not necessary for every job or path, and you can teach yourself but there is something profoundly validating about taking the classes, doing the work and obtaining your degree. It’s always yours, no one can take it away from you and it shows initiative. I made so many personal and professional connections that have been incredibly valuable. At one point I got burned out, so I went back to school and got another degree in something I fell in love with after working several years, loved the experience. I hated high school, did the bare minimum, had crippling ADHD but college was something that interested me, it was my choice, and flew through with straight A’s and nearly perfect attendance because I liked what I was learning.

I dont know why, as a kid and maybe even teen I thought that adults were these serious people, who always knew what to do. However, now at 28 I realize that I still have the same tastes and interests I did as a teenager, same sense of humour, you dont completely transform into someone else. Also there will be days when you still literally feel lost, and adults dont hold all the answers. I think what really made me feel older was realizing that Im starting to navigate the world better than my parents and them having to depend on me for answers, or realizing that you have a more mature mindset than them. Its honestly a sad feeling to realize how these ppl that you saw as all knowing are actually not like that.

The other side too, I find sometimes there are adult situations I cope well with, and it's quite surprising and feels weird that I'm the adult. For example, I'm a healthcare worker in mental health and it's like "who knows how to deal with this complicated issue" and then it's like "oh yeah, it's me, I'm the professional and actually know what to do". But largely still feel like playing house day to day ha

I do not know what this is like but I can tell you that adulting has been hard when you’re use to your childhood going so smoothly. I think there's a big difference in using slang to pretend you're younger and using it to find a way to connect with younger people. If you're trying to embrace trends to be "cool", that's a losing endeavor. But I think it's wonderful to try and stay up to date with things so you can understand the younger generation. When we were young, we had value. And it was a little insulting to be swept aside by the older generation. So as an older person now, I think it's nothing but respectful to pay attention and try and understand their trends. They're just finding ways to express themselves and we can learn a lot from them.

I can relate to the pre-printed checks with a 19__ becoming obsolete in the beginning of 2000. As an archivist I also saw this on documents of the late 19th century. But because paper was costly, the just crossed out the 18__ on each one and replaced it with a 19__. And personally I liked my 20th, had a lot of fun experiences, but I equally like my 30th, being more relaxed and experienced.

Love being 33. Though, I have always been grandma like. Taking porslin painting classes as hobby from the age of 11 to 19. "I and the other grandmas..." I think the average age in our class was probably over 50. Also, I got my first smartphone after finallizing my PhD thesis...2 years ago. :,D My favourite "I am old" moment was when I was been gringed by teenagers, because I played (still play) Pokemon Go last year...and my first thought was "Awww. I'm going to turn 34 this summer and the young adults I teach to (who are usually between 17 and 20 years old) still see me as a young teacher. It's just mind blowing to me that for the next school year, I'm going to be twice as old as some of them! I still feel young, but when I compare myself to my students, I feel like they are a different kind of young. On another topic: I love the fact that at my job, the teachers all talk to each other and hang out no matter the age. We become friends with who we get along, no matter the age! Some of the best friends I had in my department are in their sixties and already retired! Even though I knew we weren't the same age, they still felt quite young to me because of their energy, their curiosity and their overall personnality!

Great podcast. As a 32 year old a lot of it resonated with me but ultimately I agree I am not old. What I don’t understand, however, is the common conflation between being good at technology and social media use. When I was 15 KZbin came out, Facebook a couple of years later. I was using MSN Messenger with my friends. People my age are generally fine with technology as we saw it evolve in front of us. When I started work it was commented on by older people that people my age were just “better” at technology. We knew how to use everything; the difference between us and the next generation is that we didn’t have it 24/7 if we wanted to. As smartphones weren’t really a thing until I was in my 20s. In fact, when I taught some teens abroad in my 20s one said “where is Google?”(meaning they couldn’t find it on the laptop). They didn’t know the basics. Also, new kids in the workforce can’t type as quickly as me as they’re used to using keypads on touch screens whereas I grew up with messenger. I say all this to show technology and social media usage are two different things. The later being about marketing really and so one not being interested in it (as I’m not) is because I find it tedious. I understand its use but don’t want to use it. That doesn’t mean I “don’t get technology” though!

4:27 Yaaaaaassssssss, Ben! I am very happy to hear you say that cisgender men are getting gender-confirming surgeries [breast tissue reduction for gynecomastia, hair implants, plastic surgery] and treatments too [testosterone, steroid use], not just trans people. It’s important to acknowledge this because just as trans men or trans women have gender dysphoria that causes psychological and social distress and mental trauma to not see on the outside how they feel on the inside, so too do cis men have some gender dysphoria that they are not presenting in their ideal masculine way and take steps, someof which might be considered “drastic” to match what’s inside on the outside. Some transphobic people harp on what they call “mutilation”, e.g. a trans man getting gender confirmation top surgery. But how is that truly different to a cisgender man getting gender confirmation top surgery (surgical removal and liposuction of glandular and fatty tissue)? Or a cisgender or trans woman getting breast enhancement surgery? Sorry for the essay but I was just so excited to hear this come up in casual conversation!

I think ppl were just surprised that Cris said “bestie” because we don’t usually hear her say slang often lol. & I agree with Ben, we can definitely sniff out when corporations try to use teen-culture for marketing. I don’t think Cris said it like that tho and I don’t think others thought that as well. I think people were just surprised cuz Cris doesn’t usually speak in slang. Don’t worry Cris, you can say whatever you want. If you’re genuine, most kids/teens will see that, just like how we see through in-genuine corporations. Someone else pointed this out, but “bestie” was originally from the early 2000s anyways so it’s not like it’s new gen-z slang or anything lol. It’s just used slightly different now. Also just wanna say this comment section is so sad lol. I get you guys are upset you feel old now but please stop taking out your anger on gen-z, you just look bitter. Older people are so much better to hang out with and they never make me feel out of place or like i don’t fit in. Edit to add: My in laws have no interest in learning how to set up their new devices and make me or my husband set them up for them and that is very frustrating because they want these things but dont want to learn how to even set them up and they don’t even know their own email addresses and passwords 😫 Rant done that is all lol

And make mistakes and try things, and that I don’t have to be good at them all. I’m going back to school actually and I have to keep reminding myself, because I still don’t know what I “want to do for the rest of my life” that that’s ok. I can go do this degree for now and if in the future I want to change and do something else that’s ok. That doesn’t mean I shouldn’t try now just because it might change later.

About the slang thing, I think it’s amazing Cristine keeps up with it just so she can better understand “the teens”. Like if you’re talking to someone younger, they’re probably gonna use slang while they talk and if you have no idea what any of it means you can’t connect as well. I also agree with Ben’s point of corporate accounts just trying to sound cool without being genuine, but I don’t think HT does that

I totally agree with Cristine about the besties thing (also side note - it’s not a new word by any means. Just a resurgence like the butterfly clips). Why must pop culture be considered youth culture? Are we all supposed to keep our language, hobbies and behaviours stagnant as we age? I don’t use most of the slang I used in high school anymore because I’m growing and changing over time, and so is my vocabulary. I don’t see how that’s a problem, especially when that language is coming from an individual as opposed to a big corporation. The ‘fellow kids’ thing isn’t totally off base, I just don’t think it’s relevant to Cristine (or anyone else) using current slang terms unless it’s really obviously disingenuous.

Haha- I’m 21. I was born on January 3rd, 2001, and I can legally drink alcohol 😂 I know this is about 30s year olds feeling old, but occasionally I start to feel the creepy crawly sensation of getting older. One of the things that makes me feel old is playing my Wii. Just recently Nintendo discontinued the original wii I think, and I specifically remember when that came out. My brother and I were around 8-9-10(?), and we were so excited because we’d never seen something like that before. Now it’s literally discontinued as a game system 😂 We also used to have these giant chunky desktop computer monitors. These things were enormous- and so impractical as a device. We had cds that we could put into the computer to play computer games, but we also played computer games off of these old websites like Cartoon Network or something- now there are laptops that you can play with, and people rarely need to purchase CDs to play video games anymore. Additionally, people can play computer games through STEAM or Origin or the apple app sites and whatnot. Another thing that makes me feel old is I remember having cassette tapes in my family’s car, and sitting around the radio with my brother listening to little kids’ stories on cds that we put into the radio. We also had an enormous wall phone and a house phone, and if we wanted to call anyone we had to remember their number (I still remember my mom’s phone number perfectly). Additionally, I remember everyone RAVING about the blackberry phone when I was a kid- and now I don’t hear anyone talking about it. All anyone talks about is apple. Lastly, I remember my parents owning flip phones- and my brother and I thought they were so awesome. Then when my parents bought iPhone, my brother and I were ECSTATIC about them!!! We LOVED playing angry birds on our mom’s phone- it was the best thing we’d ever experienced up until that point. Anyway, I don’t know if my getting older is what’s making me feel old, or if it’s that I’ve lived through a shift/change in generations within my lifetime. In the first generation I lived in, technology was MUCH more primitive or nonexistent in comparison to today’s generation’s technology. I think that shift/change in and of itself can make someone feel old due to the extreme culture shock you experience as new technology and innovation begin to be created and whatnot- regardless of whether you’re actually old or not (I’m clearly not as a 21 year old).

The example of Gen Y (and X, for that matter) trying to use younger slang and being called out for it is not unlike attempting to fit in with cliques in high-school. More often than not, there is a sliding scale btwn using slang in a cool or ironic fashion, and navigating in the moment as to when to use it appropriately. At this point, best not to even decipher it 🤯 😆 Advice to my younger self ? Be kinder to myself mentally, emotionally and physically. I spent the better part of my late teens and early 20s in pursuit of 'the win' or being 1st or right. It really doesn't matter to anyone but you, living in your memory and rarely others. Currently reading Chip Conley, Wisdom @ Work: The Making of a Modern Elder, and how workplaces can benefit from older mentors.

This podcast comes just at the right time for me. I feel like I'm really going through it rn with all the thoughts and feelings about 30 being 'old'. What makes me feel like an adult now comparred to when I was younger, is that life doesn't feel endless anymore. Recently I feel so restless and pressured. I feel confronted by all the fantasies I had as a kid about what I wanted life to be like or what I thought it would be like. I feel like I'm going through a quarter life crises or something. I feel like I'm grieving every day for what life used to be like and what I thought life would be when I was younger. I have to remind myself that you are never 'too old' for anything and to stay positive. I am still so blessed in so many ways. I can understand Christine with the whole 'bestie' thing. It does feel like you aren't allowed to do certain things anymore or people don't think it's appropriate anymore because of your age. It makes me feel excluded and rejected at times. Like I should be ashamed?? I find myself constantly questioning wether it's alright for me to do something or wear something because of my age. It makes me feel so insecure. It's kind of hilarious that I don't want to wear a mini skirt because I'm 30 now and I don't want people to think I'm still trying to be 16 or 21 yet my mom is 60 and wears short skirts all the time and I've never question it or think it inappropriate. She looks nice! And I got to stop putting myself through this.

Sometimes when people are giving you shady or cutting advice, they say “bestie” facetiously when they don’t really mean “bestie” - it’s meant to sound very direct or a little passive aggressive. Millennials only seem to only understand how to use it literally without picking up on the subtext at all. In reality, the meaning depends on the context!

There's a song by Lorde called "Secrets from a girl" and she sums it up pretty good. Although the melody is very happy, it's one of the saddest songs by her. "Couldn't wait to turn 15, then you blink it's been ten years."

Seeing kids that I used to babysit graduate highschool made me feel real old at the ripe age of 25, so do the kids that I work with at Starbucks. I also like that you guys talked about the older students that were in your grad program and their attitude towards school. I didn't go to college until covid hit, but I find i have more drive and motivation than some of my classmates who recently graduated highschool. I'm also going at a slower pace because I want to do well and I want to enjoy it! And I am! Majoring in Chemistry is hard, but its not so bad when I only take 2-3 classes a semester so I do well and don't burnout.

I just really need to +1 on the section "It's okay to make mistakes in your 20's" It rings so true cause I have recently started chasing my dreams that I've put off for fear of shame and of what others thought of me. I'm now 32 and I really couldn't care-less about how good or bad I am and what others think of what I'm doing. Instead, I'm proud of myself for doing it in the first place and continue pursuing that which makes me happy.

being in my 20s, I’m so happy after watching this podcast because i feel like i’m already following those advices (not caring about other ppl opinions too much, wearing what i want, being myself, listen to my coworkers even if they are 50+ wtf ??)

I’m not even in my 30’s (25) but being a middle school teacher really taught me a lot about the youths. It is because you are like a person, Duolingo and Wendy’s are faceless corporations so it’s kind of funny and fun when they use slang. But any time I tried to use slang, because my students knew me, they just felt weird that an older person was using their slang-regardless if I used it correctly or not. They were like “that’s for us not our 25 year old teacher.” So I just embraced the cringe and would dab and say “catch the drip.” Kids are weird but they honestly thought it was endearing that an adult actually tried to relate to them.

Around 30:00 I completely understand not being the youngest person at work anymore… and I’m 21 lol I used to always be the youngest manager at 18, then I left for 6 months to take care of my sick family member and when I came back, I was the oldest manager! The new management crew called me grandma and everything lmao and I’m only 21

As a young/almost mid 20 something year old, I can completely relate to the external pressure of figuring out all the details of my life now. Even if we’ve graduated, there’s always pressure of “is this what you want to do for the rest of your life?” “Think of your career goals”. “You need to work somewhere where you can grow and not get stuck”. There’s no perceived room to explore and live and find out what you want because you need to settle for something now, or you’ll be ruined for life. It’s incredibly exhausting, traumatizing, and overall anxiety inducing. I appreciate all the “older” people who say to take our time and not worry about finding everything now. It’s such a hard ask to figure everything out now to someone who just recently stopped being a student and is completely newly out in the “real world”

I just turned 51. Aside from generally being achier and creakier, I definitely feel like I'm becoming less tolerant with age, which is very strange. I find myself saying things that made me mad when my parents said them 30 years ago. I also get excited about new appliances, and the feeling when you've cleaned or redecorated a room and everything is new and fresh.....

I turned 30 this year and I work in a IT Service Desk.. I'm the oldest in my team and even a year older than my boss.. I feel old sometimes but the fact we're so close in age also makes the dynamic a lot better than previous places where I was the youngest and everyone else was heading towards their 40s at the time.

Gen z person here, about the conversation happening at 22:20 I don't think they were saying it as in "oh cringe Cristine just said bestie". I can't quite explain it but everytime I've used it or my friends have, we don't mean that the thing we're referring to shouldn't be doing what they're doing, we saying it to point out the fact that someone did something and it's amusing. I'm really struggling to explain it. I can see how it's seen as a negative thing but I'm almost 100% sure that they meant it in a "Cristine just did something and I noticed" kind of way. It sounds like it makes absolutely no sense but if you look at the comments of memes on instagram too, we just comment that about funny things I should also say not all of us really use it seriously, at least me and my friends don't. We generally use it ironically and sometimes we're weirded out by people saying bestie irl too. It's not really an age thing, but you can use it Cristine, I don't think the person who posted it meant it the way you read it

I had a really bad sunburn in my teens. I was in Arkansas with family and we went tubing/canoeing down a river. I refused any sunscreen offered to me and we ended up on the river for about 6 hours. I didn't go to the doctor or feel ill, but I had blisters and now I'm covered in freckles. I slather on sunscreen now and even wear a swimming shirt to avoid sunburns. In the past few years, I've started going to the dermatologist to get checked out for suspicious spots. My sister and one of my cousins both have said they use my story as a warning. I wish I had been better about wearing sunscreen when I was younger.

Regarding the whole youth slang thing I have a feeling that the comments that said "not Cristine using the word bestie" was more so the younger audience being shocked that #1 you knew the term and the use and #2 that you would want to use it. As a member of the gen z population I love that you use the term bestie and you can continue to use it!
