@@brittanymao4775 I think glitter is made out of Mica, which is something found in dirt and is very dangerous to get. I'm not sure so don't quote me on it but I'm pretty sure I heard it in a documentary before...💌 (EDIT: I said glitter but I meant shimmer 😂😅)

The type of shimmer Cristine describes for the shampoo for example is most probably mika. Mika is a mineral, it's completely safe for cosmetics but is known for the use of child labor. The question about mika is if it's ethically sourced. Glitter is what Cristine says and it's made of plastic (there's also biodegradable glitter but is not that common).
@GirlyBitsCosmetics
@GirlyBitsCosmetics 3 жыл бұрын
Glitter vs. Shimmer: Glitter is made of plastic sheets (other than the newer biodegradable glitter which is made from a plant based cellulose) and is cut (not ground up) into the shapes no matter how small. The type of shimmer you are talking about is synthetic fluorophylogopite which is the mostly clear/white looking shimmer that is very fine and smooth but VERY sparkly and usually reflects a full spectrum of colours. It can look like glitter but its not. Mica is also a shimmer but it's more often a coloured product, so I think you are referring to fluorophylogopite based on your description. I think the biggest industry for glitter is either for money, or car/boat paint. Car paint is (unfairly) labeled a manly or macho thing, and some guys wouldn't want to admit it's FULL of glitter.

When referring to shimmer vs. glitter in the cosmetic industry, shimmer effects are most commonly achieved by Mica along with organic and inorganic pigments. Including (but not limited to) Titanium Dioxide, Tin Oxide, Manganese Violet and/or Ultramarine. Glitter on the other hand is most often associated with Plastics. With glitters being made from Polyethylene and pigments. However, biodegradable glitters are becoming more common due to the environmental impact of micro plastics. These biodegradable glitters tend to be made from materials such as synthetic fluorphlogopite, mica and other pigments. Hope that clarifies things. 😊

To be honest it was a bit annoying seeing Ben so stubborn trying to explain something that Cristine LITERALLY knows about. Would that be mansplaining? Idk but Cristine has videos were she uses both glitters and shimmers, so she clearly knows they’re not the same. 🤡
@lisamo1013
@lisamo1013 3 жыл бұрын
@@andre_garay do you think a journalist with unknown amount of interest in glittery nail polish would necessarily make that distinction? Or a company representative would pick that specific fact to highlight when she isn't allowed to actually say any detail about how it is produced (I assume glitter and shimmer are produced differently)? I think she was the one being stubborn by assuming that despite the information being passed on through at least a couple people and starting in a way more diverse industry than hers, that the definition for glitter is the same as the one she is used to. I absolutely don't doubt that she knows her nail polish stuff but that doesn't mean that she knows everything. And especially when the info is: you wouldn't know that it is glitter, then thinking a bit outside the box wouldn't hurt. But either way, it's a silly topic so let's not get too serious about this.

In reference to the military discussion, Ben is absolutely correct that "glitter"/shiny debris is commonly used to distract radar or radar-guided missiles. This is called chaff. Cristine is also correct that there are more technological radar-jammers, etc, but from my time working in the defense contracting space, physical clouds of aluminum or reflective plastic are still used. I fucking hate this damn conspiracy theory! It’s an insult to the people who accomplished this amazing feat of human ingenuity and my grandfather’s legacy and memory. He was on a team of engineers who worked alongside hundreds of people who made this happen. And geopolitically there was a huge reason for the US to win this leg of the space race. It insults everyone who worked so tirelessly as who died to make this happen. It’s not a “fun one to think about” it’s inane and cruel. You can also use a damn telescope and a laser to see that laser bounce off of a set of mirrors left on the surface. Rant over. TLDR: stop spreading such stupid conspiracy theories about the moon landing it insults the achievement of thousands.

With the boat thing, macho men think of glitter as “girly” and so cars and boats make a lot of sense. Like the guys aren’t thinking of that as glitter, like Ben said, they aren’t thinking about it at all, they are just thinking “nice shiny manly boat”. (Plus the environmental thing Ben said too.) Not saying it is that but that makes a lot of sense to me seeing how many guys react to getting glitter on their skin from a kid of woman in their life.

The ingredient on those images of luster dust that sticks out the most is silicone dioxide. Silicone dioxide is the atomic base of all quartz minerals, we call them silicates. It’s also what glass is made out of. Mica is a silicate and the common name for muscovite, so it’s probably a highly refined form of mica. Mica is ideal because it forms in extremely thin sheets which are very brittle. They often form in dense, thick, laminated looking formations. It’s a mineral so the atomic structure is ordered in a symmetrical crystalline lattice. Once the mica is ground, it’s reflective because light is bouncing off of and around the atomic structure of the matter. Titanium dioxide is also a mineral, found mostly in island sands off of east coast Australia. So, I think ~shimmers~ are mostly refined versions of naturally occurring minerals, which are NOT organic but mostly inert and safe. SO many variations of silicone dioxide exist and they’re all different and useful in their own ways.

An interesting point brought up -- you actually can feed animals food safe/non-toxic glitter. It's used to track whose poop is whose. So for example, lets say you have multiple animals and one of them is having diarrhea and it's not easy to tell whose poop belongs to who. You can feed each animal a different color glitter to figure out who's having the issue. You can actually do the same "experiment" with non-toxic crayons. It's safe as long as you're not feeding them excessive amounts of the products. This method is especially useful for people who have multiple cats and can't figure out which one has a problem. So Cristine is right that you shouldn't just feed animals glitter for no reason, but if it's necessary, do so with the advice/instructions from your veterinarian. (Source: I'm a vet tech and one of my doctors does this for her own cats when they get sick because she has so many of them)

@@MrsGretchen123 The Supreme Courts has definitely settled this in numerous cases. I don't even need to google it. Constitution protects all basic free speech so long as it isn't a direct call to violence (E.G. Maxine Waters telling people to get confrontational on the streets). “The danger of viewpoint discrimination, is that the government is attempting to remove certain ideas or perspectives from a broader debate. That danger is all the greater if the ideas or perspectives are ones a particular audience might think offensive, at least at first hearing. To permit viewpoint discrimination in this context is to permit government censorship.” --Justice Anthony Kennedy The term "hate speech" is a phrase everyone would define differently. It's a vaguely shaped club used by whomever wields it so they may beat people into submission. Which is exactly why we don't have hate speech. “If there is any principle of the Constitution that more imperatively calls for attachment than any other it is the principle of free thought - not free thought for those who agree with us but freedom for the thought that we hate.” --Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, 1929 and Samuel Alita, 2016 (Metal vs. Tam)

so glitter is defined by “a brilliant shine by reflection” where shimmer is defined by “a subdued sparkle or sheen.” They have some of the same synonyms but mostly in art and makeup they’re very different! Also the process of making glitter is usually produced in thin sheet that are painted with bright metallic or iridescent colors that reflect light then the sheets are cut up into tiny pieces to make glitter. When you make shimmer it’s more of making minerals make an effect, it’s created when mica is coated with an oxide, most commonly titanium dioxide like in eye shadow or highlight. That’s why with makeup and nail polish many people have a preference between the two.

Was I the only one that thought of the jewelry industry? So, definitions. For this to work we would have to agree that "glitter" can come in more than the traditional hex shape. Like the shiny plastic confetti shaped like stars, hearts, unicorn heads, ect. Same basic material, just a different custom shape. Foiling gems (backing the gems with a shiny metal to increase sparkle) has been a way of improving the look of gems for a long time. Backing them with shiny plastic instead of shiny metal would be a way to save costs. You would be able to see the increased shine, but not realize that it could be glitter. I could also see the jewelry industry not wanting to explain that diamonds aren't that shiny in real life, but they look prettier this way so just buy them...

I definitely think you're onto something. The entire jewelry industry is founded on the idea of purity and rarity, esp diamonds, even though they arent particularly rare, their value is entirely reliant on that perception. it all fits with the clues from the glitterx employee, what theyre doing cant be illegal (or it the govt would be all up in that ass after that interview), but they were made to sign a NDA bc it would be an industry shattering scandal if one or several major jewelers were exposed to be doing this, even the ones not doing it would lose value. and if yall seen uncut gems... well, i wouldnt wanna fuck around on the bad side of anyone in the jewelry industry either...

I'd say it's a car company that buys the glitter, if you look closely at some car paint it sparkles but doesn't look like glitter from further away and a it takes a lot of product to cover a lot of cars and a lot of manly men wouldn't want to have a glittery car because it's feminine. Edit: posted this before they said boats and cars, maybe if we run off of the military theory and the boat theory it could be the navy, water glistens and if they use glitter then it'll reflect light and colour and basically disappear.

Companies make decisions about branding and wording and copy based on testing and target audience response - stands to reason to assume the average (read: Target) boat buyer is an over 35 y/o male who doesn’t identify with the word “Glitter.”

I wonder how “GlitterX” defines “glitter”. And, if it’s silver (the most popular) I wonder if the US Military has glitter in the gray paint used on their ships as a type of camouflage. Moving water can certainly be very glittery.

I know really nothing about it compared to what's out there, but those pigments in reflective paints like on ships or lane markings or street signs are actually reflective because of finely crushed glass incorporated into the paint or coating!

I actually saw a really really good theory on this on the unresolvedmysteries subreddit. Some glitter is made from very finely cut, highly reflective mylar sheets. In its sheet form, you wouldn't know it was glitter. So what uses highly reflective plastic in a sheet like form? Food packaging. Chip bags, candy wrappers, cookie sleeves, etc. Not sure if this link will work, but they go into detail on the theory: www.reddit.com/r/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/gz7up9/why_i_disagree_with_the_current_theories

Look up Razzle Dazzle Camouflage it was popular during WW1. You can’t paint the ship (or in this case plane) one shade of blue to mimic the sky because the shade of blue is always changing. What you can do however is make is make it difficult to know what’s the plane/boat is doing and how fast is going
@A.Filthy.Casual

As someone thats in the military, intel specifically, I can tell you it ain't that; it wouldn't make any sense. Having a shimmering paint on the boat would only make it more visible--and thats besides the fact that camouflage isn't used on boats anymore. The large caliber guns used on ships operate at such an incredibly long distance you can't even visibly see the target in the majority of instances you would be firing on it. Ships use surface search radar systems to scan the surface for their target--and since the electromagnetic energy that is used in radar systems is just a different wavelength of light, having a reflective surface would actually make your vessel easier to see with radar. If you look at the newest ships that are being fielded, they're typically flat gray and very angular; this is because the gray color actually comes from specialized radar-absorbing materials (which is also whats used for aircraft) and the angular shape helps deflect radar waves to avoid the wave reflecting back to the radar receiver and reduce the profile of your vessel.

Soap is my top guess 🧼 It checks all the boxes I can think of. 1) The process of creating the soap probably creates a potent and recognizable smell, which would explain why the interviewer wasn’t allowed to be around the area where it’s being made. 2) many many brands of soaps, body washes, and shampoos have that sparkly sheen and we continually use/buy it throughout our lives so that would explain why it’s the biggest purchaser (plus many brands are under the same ownership so that would increase the quantity to a single buyer). 3) it can’t be good for the environment, just like micro beads, so that would explain why they’re not disclosing who they are/what they’re doing. I’m sure they’re hoping that by not letting the public know they’ll be able to keep their harmful formula and not deal with backlash/loss of sales (like with micro beads).

Found a podcast with someone whose Dad owned a glitter production company in Germany, and he said the mysterious buyers are probably automotive manufacturers. Apparently car paint is comprised almost entirely of what the industry calls "effects pigments" (i.e. glitter, though ground suuuuper fine) suspended in liquid - there can't be any space between the pigments or you'd be able to physically see bits of glitter on your car, so it takes a TON to make a small amount of paint. This is why cars paint is so lustrous under direct sunlight.

Even when the vintage paints are in top-knick and have no sun damage they don't have the same "floress" (sorry, can't think of a better word and IDK how you spell that? Flores? Floures? I see your point, but here in canada a lot of people of middle class have cottages with boats because we live close by to cottage-like areas (i live in the same city as Christine did growing up) so she probably wasn't rich like she is now and she definitely wasn't poor but she was along the middle class (from what i can assume by living here for 21 years)

I was super poor growing up, but my grandparents were middle class, and they got a cottage and a boat, so we used it all the time as kids. So yeah, it's absolutely possible! Also, a boat doesn't have to be SUPER expensive. It's just a can with wood benches and a motor. I guess it really is a Canadian thing cause so many people here have boats, but we also have A LOT of lakes... or maybe it's more of an Ontario thing... idk.
@paranoiarpincess

@@elisa4664 thank you! I live in Ontario too, and my family and I were very poor growing up. To the point that when I tried to get financial aid when going to college, my parents put so little an income on their taxes that I didn't qualify! They didn't believe it was possible for my parents to live on such a low income. All that said, my grandparents were middle class and got their house when houses were insanely cheap, so they were able pay it off, and saved up and were able to get a cottage that came with a boat. It wasn't the best boat in the world, but they got the cottage and boat for the whole family. So yeah, super poor, I'm talking welfare poor, and we had a boat and a cottage. My grandparents weren't even super well off, and they could get a boat because it just came with the place. They loved being up north so much, they sold their original house, moved into a winterized cottage down the road from our first cottage, and built an entire floor under it so we all had somewhere to stay together. It was lovely. I lived there with them for a few years even. They ended up selling the boat with the old cottage, but with the sale of their original house, they were able to get a pontoon boat. Which is something that they not only really wanted, but turned into my grandpa's second home lol. Point is, yeah, definitely don't need to be rich to own a boat.
