Monolithic domes are mixed in with this video. They are made with a shotcrete/rebar inner layer then layer of foam and then vinyl on the outside.

Are these the same domes that protect against certain natural disasters?? I ask because the domes I saw that did this were monolithic but some of the domes in this video don't look like they are made from the same material since they have corners in the design of the domes whereas the monolithic are just smooth 360 round.

When you look at the specs for building shapes able to withstand cyclone-force winds, you'll find that the best shape is the one with no corners, i.e. the monolithic dome, or half- sphere. This is for the obvious reason that the upward push of cyclonic winds has nowhere to hook itself onto and lift the roof. The problem with monolithic domes is that they ate difficult to build, because of the frame. The next best thing is the geodesic.

Some of these designs are just horrible. Using massive laid stone walls together with the light, minimalist modern lines of a geodesic dome defects the whole design integrity. And as far as shingles on a structure that uses the monocoque engineering integrity of a dome - that's just foolish. Also, domes have enough leak problems already without the piecemeal exterior layer of traditional shingles. Buckminster Fuller was promoting the "ephemeralization" of homes, the "doing more with less" was the basis of the whole concept. Many of these designs are like adding garden gnomes and bbq pits to a traditional simple Japanese garden in both styles and functionality.
