Fel Magic - World of Warcraft Lore

Way back when WoW was beginning, when most of the lore still came from Wacraft III and the early books such as The Last Guardian, the story on fel magic was that it was essentially the "original" arcane magic, and it was energy drawn directly from the Twisting Nether. The Titans and their creation had ways to refine this energy, making a clean version which is what we call arcane magic now, and the main source was the Well of Eternity, which was constantly drawing power from the Nether and "purifying" it. When it blew up, the power of the arcane was spread across all of Azeroth. Compared to the arcane, fel magic was more addictive, dangerous and mutagenic, but it was also more powerful. In The Last Guardian, Khadgar describes the feeling of the magic in a room that had been used for demon summoning, that it felt heavy and unclean, that trying to make it do anything was difficult, and when he did get it to do something it overwhelmed him and knocked him out. However, Blizzard likes to make retcons about how their magic systems work. In Lord of the Clans, for example, shamans draw their power from the Spirits of the Elements, who are wise and benevolent and transcendant living forces; but in Cataclysm Blizzard decided they wanted most shamans to draw their powers from pacts with elementals, who are different. I feel the best way to resolve this is to say there are multiple ways of accessing the various powers; some shamans draw from the spirits, some from elementals. Some warlocks draw fel energy from sacrifice, some from demon pacts, some directly from the Nether. The ability to use the Light, too, can be drawn from the Light overall which is basically the fantasy version of the Force, or it can be granted by (or taken from) the Naaru. One thing to note about warcraft's magic, though, is that it's pretty interchangeable. The different power sources are better suited to particular uses, but can cast each other's spells with effort. In The Last Guardian, again, Khadgar uses arcane magic to power a farseeing spell that he learns about from what the priests of the Light can do. In Beyond the Dark Portal, as well, there is a scene where he draws on the power of the elements, and it is described how it's very difficult for him due to not being used to it, but it is possible with enough willpower. Some warlocks used to be mages, some used to be shaman; during Cata, we also saw the example of Druids of the Flame, who shifted from using the powers of the wild to the power of the fire elementals, and so on.

I just realized something, that I had known, but not thought of for a long time. Illidan, used the power of the skull of Gul'dan. Arthas, had Frostmourne, which was an artifact imbued with power by Ner'Zul. Illidan, and Arthas, had a final battle in Northrend, where Arthas defeated Illidan. The artifact of Ner'Zul, defeated the artifact of Gul'dan, the master defeated the apprentice.

My theory on how fire works in warcraft is that they come from different sources to have a similar effect. Mages: conjour fire by focusing arcane power and heating up things by changing the atomic state of an object or substance. Shamans: Summon fire from elementals as part of their pact they made and the element of fire is granted to them if an elemental deems them worthy. Warlocks: Summon fel/hellfire to their location from the twisting nether. So literally teleporting dancing balls of fel energy from the nether to Azeroth the same way they would a demon.

Fel magic is a form of life magic. According to Blizzard's Historian Loreology fel magic is created by "burning" life. IF fel magic requires sacrificing/burning life then life MUST have something integral to fel magic's creation. That "something" (which would be life energy) would be a part of fel magic.

Fel is the urge of wanting to press ALT+F4 once you tried starting up a game where you didn't know if you were going to get bored or not, whether you're actually bored or not. If you indulge in hatred, it will burn much more brightly next time.

A few things: -Fel has pretty much always existed. Warcraft chronicle, Fel was created at the birth of the universe by the clash of light and void. Consecration Vs Desecration in several other books has also created fel as noted in WoW lore snips and the wiki, though game mechanics do not go this far. -Fel magic was initially created from the clash between void and light, but can consume any other form of magic to make more of itself. Most particularly, life energy and souls, probably because of its connection to light and void. It burns alot brighter than the magic it consumes, leading many to think it's more powerful, but its also alot more limited than any other frequency of magic. -Gul'dan used a single sacrifice, a draenai child, as the fuel for the rip between Azeroth and Draenor. WC1, WC2, Rise of the Horde Novel. Admittedly this was reconnected with WoD and the WC Movie, but as both are noted AU's I'm ignoring them. WC2TtDP Ner'Zul ripped open several other portals using arcane artifacts as the sacrifice instead of lives or souls. - The initial warlocks were the Nathreziem. They taught all other warlocks around the galaxy how to summon demons as part of their original shit. before Sargeras started imprisoning them. The Eradar joined up for the thrill of learning much later when Sargeras saw how BAD the Nathreziem were at commanding armies and decided he needed better minions.

Blood elves were changed because of the presence of fel too and not because they used it. All they did was learn to suck the mana out of living creatures but that doesn't mean they used fel. The felcrystals were the main reason, but going to Outland also can make their eyes green. Even the high elves who went to Outland have green eyes.

A nice, video! I wont nitpick on new information gathered by the upcoming WoW Chornicle book, however one thing I did wish to mention is the Krokul, or Broken as you mentioned. While the fel use of the Orc did sicken the land and its inhabitans, the cause of the Draenei degrading into the Broken is actually the so called Red Mist which was released upon the Siege of Shattarath in Rise of the Horde. While we know little of the Red Mist, we can presume it was some alchemical/biological weapon crafted by the Burning Legion to target the Draenei specifically, as it prevented them to use or call upon the powers of the Light. It is possible Fel was used in the Red mist but.. it isnt clear. Only its effects, which would make the Draenei mind and body degrade into the broken, or in worst case, Lost Ones

What is the fifth element ? lets take a look at some thoughts... - Life itself but in the void cmon (x) -However, in Lord of the Clans, Golden describes fifth element as spirit of wilds, the shaman's greatest friend or enemy...(Thrall hears it during shaman test) -might be the force of the Light -or Multipass :) -Arcane, Nether,Fel energy ,or something darker , the imposible is .....Cris Metzen and if there is one lord for each element might there be one for this one also I hope you'll find a nice theory about it in one of your videos.

+Bamsmack Fel magic is the main weapon of the Burning Legion. Obviously fel isn't directly responsible, but it was used by the Burning Legion. If the Burning Legion didn't exist certainly a lot of events would be completely different. For one Azeroth wouldn't have been shattered and some of the current races would have never appeared.

Nah we got confirmation that Arcane and Fel are opposite ends of spectrum so they are balanced magics. It depends on caster, not the actualy magic. Like Khaghar is almost as powerful with arcane as Gul'Dan is with Fel.

Nice video I have to say! so let's say in RP you have been a warlock since the age of 15 to 30. how much would fel affect you character? My character started off to do simple things like cast shadow bolts and later on started to be able to summon really complex demons at the age of 28, So how would my character be affected?

+wildernes004 Really not certain. It depends heavily on how responsible your character is and if he knows how to control it. The power definitely affects the apperance from long usage, but it mainly depends on what sort of power he is using.

Fel energy and Void energy are the same thing: Void energy and Fel energy are both entropic, they are both "designed" to leave systems in a state "less orderly" ("more chaotic" than they already are). Systems containing (or composed of) fel energy (which was described as chaotic energy) consume life/souls. Systems containing (or composed of) void energy are naturally chaotic (creatures of the void were stated to be naturally chaotic) and they consume life/souls. There are people (e.g. Muffinus and Loreology) who make statements conflicting with the fact that void is entropic, but that's because they want to feign ignorance.

They were actually close to one another (Good example of that was earlier in the game, where they were tied before Illidan even got the Skull) and Arthas was on the Ice Crown, where the Lich King was and were his strength is at max. Also, Lich King probably gave him all his powers to help Arthas defeat Illidan and Illidan was in a dark prison for 10000 years. Also, i believe, it was a lucky strike from Arthas that defeated Illidan, but you don't have to believe me on that, as i'm not 100% sure myself. That said, i don't care much who's stronger as they both are badass
