Expert review you nailed everything. I ordered two of the Staggs before they were released. Love the style, love the functionality, I have no complaints. But I’ll tell you it’s been a revelation on the speed of the pour, it transports you to a slower more relaxed frame of mind which is really why we take a break to enjoy tea anyway. I understand the zen of it now. I’ll bet you get there too.

It's not about impatience. It's about some teas needing water to hit the leaves with more force.
@michaelkoenig
@michaelkoenig 4 жыл бұрын
I Noe I am able to do that somewhat by raising the kettle while pouring for stronger flow.

Great Review. I have owned one of these for 2 years now. I bought it especially for Gong Fu Brewing tea from Mei Leaf and Ocha & Co from Japan. As far as pour speed for agitating the leaves. Instead of just pouring stationary in one place. Try pouring in a "Z" and "figure 8" type of pattern, back and forth, and it agitates the leaves pretty good.

I also just pour higher with this kettle so the water hits the leaves with more force.

I bought the white version of this kettle about a year ago for my pour over coffee, but have also been using it as I've gotten into fine teas (gong fu method) purchased from your online shop. It's only for one person (me) so I don't mind refiling if I need to and I've never had any issue with the temp. control. Love how quiet it is and the speed of heating. I researched just about every kettle out there and decided on this one for build quality and design. Love your videos! Learning so much from them :)

Glad to see the stagg reviewed on here! I bought this kettle as soon as it came out since that's also when I first found the Mei Leaf channel and wanted to get into gong fu brewing. It's easily one of my favorite brewing tools both for tea and coffee. To anyone reading down this far I cant recommend enough this kettle and paying that extra $ over other kettles. I'm always very satisfied when I invest in a high quality tool that ends up being worth paying more.

I have the Stagg Ekg for about 1 month now and I can say that so far I am extremely happy with it. Don's main criticism was the pouring speed, I think this will really depend on how much tea you brew. I can imagine that it can get annoying if you host big tea parties or if, like Don, you are tasting through several hundred teas a year but for my 100ml gaiwan it's really not a problem at all. If I didn't watch the video I probably wouldn't even have noticed it as a potential problem.

Thanks for this review, Don. I was keeping an eye on Fellow’s website for a year or more (yes, I’m boring), to see when the British-market Stagg EKG would become available - saw it, then realised that it still has the American power limitation at 1200 watts. I wrote to Fellow asking why they had done that and if they would be considering ramping up the wattage to meet our higher mains voltage. They wrote back, very kindly suggesting that this is something that they may look at in the future. We are used to faster kettles (at an average of around 2800 watts as opposed to a maximum of 1500 watts for the North American market). - and I really fancied one of these; and yes, it’s okay, perhaps for tea or, indeed, pour over coffee - but I think it would drive me mad for, say, boiling water for pasta. So I’d need two kettles! Not going to happen in my tiny kitchen. So, what to do? The Sage variable temperature kettle has a higher capacity and is - wait for it - a blistering 3000 watts. But no goose neck...I’m still waiting for my particular compromise.

That is terrible, why Fellow would do this is very disappointing and the only reason I will not be buying this.

Science says in America you can only go up to 1500 watts unless your power input is different in your little world. 2,400 if your house is maxing a 20 amp breaker at 120v. Impossible to go higher unless you switch to a industrial plug.

Great review, thank you! I have both these and can say set to the same temperatures the Stagg is 8 to 10 degrees cooler on the poor after 3 to 5 second pours to heat the spouts. Also pour speed is a deal breaker for agitation required for cupping and French press. temperature accuracy is paramount to extraction, so Returning the Stagg.

I have a Krups gooseneck variable temperature water kettle that does the same thing in that the heating slows down so it doesn't overshoot the temp I set it for. I use it for tea more than coffee and I love it. For me it was a game changer for tea brewing, to have something more precise than simply boiling water, then waiting for it to cool down a bit. Especially because different teas brew at different temperatures. It holds the temperature for 30 minutes and the controls allow me to set it for any temp I want rather than having to choose from various program sets. It's not nearly as well known or expensive as the Fellow Stagg kettles but it serves my purposes very well. One of the features that the Krups has is that there is no plastic inside the kettle which is why I chose it over other brands. It's my favorite appliance in my kitchen! :-)

You kind of mention this, but the pour speed is REALLY optimized for coffee pourovers. With the Bonavita, I'd have to slow down the pour enough that it started spilling down the gooseneck. Once I got the Fellow, I quickly realized that its minimum flow rate was perfectly matched with the minimum that I would want, and the maximum was perfectly aligned as well. Doesn't help you with your tea, but it might be comforting to know that it's at least perfect for coffee 😅

Hello, yes, Brewista is really great. No plastics inside, only silicone gasket around the thermometer pin. 1,2l volume, no crackling during the water heating :) But you can enjoy a lot of beebs :D It makes three beeps when the water reaches desired temperature. So you pour the water in gaiwan, put the kettle back in the base and if you want to use HOLD function, you press the button and you hear another three beeps, because actual water temperature is the temperature that was set - three beeps are programmed for it. Why three beeps? I think one could be enough :) Luckily when the HOLD function is activated, it make that three beeps only for the very first time (when the set temperature is reached) and then it only regularly reheats the water without any beeps. But accurancy OK, heating time - lets say OK (about 5 min), pouring can be also quite fast - not super splasch, but I usually fill 120ml gaiwan in 3,5 sec (rim pouring) or 2 sec (pouring straight on the leaves). Handle is OK, no barrier that would prevent you touch the body - but I never burned myslef while pouring or handling the kettle. Sometimes I accidentally touch it by my arm when I'm sitting in an armchair :) - you know, I usually have the kettle next to me on little table on the right. But it is OK, I can handle it :) That optical signalling is great idea. It's a pity that designers didnt have the same idea. It would be great - for example decent yellow LED when heating, turning to green when the water is ready with lovely short beep. HOLD function could be signalized with pulsating green light :) And red color if there is not enough water :D ...

I got the W&E kettle on amazon, the metal one, and have been loving it. It's only $54 USD and worth every penny. It only has 180F, 195F, 200F, 205F, and 212F and I would prefer Celsius, but it works so well for a cheap price and it looks nice. Anyone wanting to get into tea and doesn't want to drop 100 USD or more, then definitely get this kettle to get started.

Update, I just did a test of my Bonavita 1.7L temp variable (1500Watts), and it heated very cold filtered water at full 1.7L capacity to 100ºC at about 6:55 minutes. Calculating the ratios, the Stagg would heat 1.7 litres at about 7.55(repeating) minutes, so a little slower but not a ton. But that capacity though..... here I am sitting here thinking 1.7 is too small for a gongfu session haha [Getting geeky with teaware indeed!] - oh and about the lower limit, you can't set it lower than 60ºC, but you can just stop it's boiling before it hits the limit manually.

I bought a Stagg EKG about 6 months ago and it's very nice and well built. No complaints. But some kettles that cost less than half the price are perfectly suitable for tea brewing. And yes, sometimes I would like the water to pour faster but this kettle is for coffee so it was intentionally designed that way. As for the short power cord, I believe manufacturers make the cord short for safety. As for the noise, this kettle makes about as much noise as any kettle but it's one of the more quiet ones. I wish someone would make a silent kettle for discreet brewing at work. And about the power output, a typical electrical circuit in a room (in the USA at least) allows either 1800 or 2400 watts before the lights go out (breaker is tripped). A 3 kilowatt kettle would be too much. Maybe other counties have higher limits but that would require the manufacturer to modify their kettle design to be sold outside the USA with a higher power output.

Hey Don! I have this kettle, and I wanted to say that the temperature overshoot usually only happens when the water level is low. I never usually notice an overshoot when it's full or mostly full. The capacity is a little bit of a bummer, but i just bring my brita tank over to the counter and top it off while it's still heating 🤣

I used a Brewista gooseneck and loved it for the year and a half that it worked. I loved having the water hot when I woke up, but I refused to buy another considering how quickly it gave up the ghost. So I bought a Bonavita gooseneck and I am very satisfied with it. No auto start, but good capacity, good pour, adequate temp range, and reasonable price. A bit slow to heat up and a bit loud, but overall, if it lasts a few years, I would buy another. Re the EKG, I’d rather spend the extra money on pinnacle tea!

Just wanted to mention that the sharper the spout of a kettle, the less likely they are to drip. My Dad was a potter and made a LOT of kettles, and used to be a bit obsessive about the sharpness of the spout for this reason. Might have been taken to the extreme a bit for this particular kettle though - I don't recall him slashing his arms up. Could always hit it with a fine file to get the edge off but I guess not everyone has one of those lying around. And then it might drip... Oh and if more agitation is required because of the slower pour, just lift the kettle up higher and let gravity do the work.

What a coincidence. My Bonavita gooseneck kettle also stopped working after three years! And I also bought the same Fellow Stagg EKG kettle as a replacement (it was literally one of the last few available kettles in the market). I didn't know about the pour issue but I personally don't mind it (it sped up when I take my thumb off that small flat knob at the top) -- I had problems controlling the pour speed with the Bonavita. But frankly I don't think I'm making a fair comparison because I didn't realise I'd been abusing my Bonavita with regular tap water when I should've been using filter. I was educated that filter water not only improves the longevity of the kettle but also the taste of my drink.

The Brewista Smart Pour 2 had a bit more capacity (1,2L), a nice design though subjective, a touchsensitive dock, hold function up to 60 min, and that lovely pour control. I'm rocking a Cuisinart CPK-17 PerfecTemp 1.7-Liter Stainless Steel Cordless Electric kettle. I've really liked it mainly because of the capacity and the different setting particularly for tea. I have the Cuisinart CPK-17 Perfect Temp 1.7-Liter Electric Kettle and I love it. Love the capacity and how easy it is to select the temperature of commonly brewed types of tea. I figured that if I needed to brew tea at a temperature that is in between the presets, I just pick the lower temperature preset in that way, I'm not bruising the tea leaves. And I love how it beeps to let me know that the water has come to temperature. No more bitter tasting tea for me ever since getting this kettle and this kettle is the hardest working appliance in my home, being worked 2-4 times per day. And cleaning off the limescale buildup is not that hard with 3 limes/lemons sliced up, toss it inside the kettle, fill it halfway with cold water, bring it to boil then cool it down. Another trick is to use 1 cup distilled vinegar, bring it to boil and rinse it out. Takes no time at all. I prefer limes/lemons to vinegar because of the vinegar smell.

Immediate thumbs up for doing nicer kettle reviews... I JUST WISH this would come with a pure silver interior or somehow in glass... just not stainless steel. Global tea hut has an article out about fire and it's effect on water for tea. They say that coals are the best and fire or gas is second best, citing that electric kettles are like microwaving your water. It sure is convenient though! Great review but here is the main issue, the Bonavita comes in a 1.7 Litre version which is what I and most people I know use for gongfu brewing. It has of course the larger capacity, but most importantly it has a 1500watt heating element that will heat more water faster than either of these. I just recently bought the Stagg EKG. My main issue is exactly what you point out at the end of your review, regarding the pour. This kettle is simply too slow. It would actually aggravate me. I would try to speed it up by increasing the angle of the kettle, and then water would start coming out of the holes in the lid! Really extremely annoying. So... I had to return this kettle simply because of the pouring, an exaggeration to describe it is "dribbling". Otherwise I love all the features.

cables can be lengthened with extensions though. why gripe at all. it should be minor as well. on my counter, there is STILL too much cable. * LID - The friction fit is not perfectly watertight and I am getting a few drips of water leaking from the lid when pouring vigorously. Except you can't pour "vigorously" because as long as you are angled enough to get full flow, there is really only one speed. holding the kettle at a more aggressive angle doesn't speed up the pour rate because that is the inherent nature of a gooseneck. So not exactly sure what "vigorous" means when full speed of this kettle is pretty slow. once the water level in the kettle is above the spout, you can't get any faster than that no matter how much more you angle the kettle.

Re: temperature controlled kettles: when i became more of a teahead, i became curious about my Cusinart variable Temp Kettle.....i suspected it wasn’t doing 90c & 95c! So i stuck a thermometer in the water, i was right, it was doing 85 -88 for 90&95 settings & 95c for 100c . Do i have defect?

A longer wire will eventually carry less current, because the resistance increases as the length increases. A shorter wire can carry more current than a longer wire.

Does anyone know about a kettle where you can put it back and it still keeps the same temperature you originally requested? So essentially you can set temperature once for the whole session.

My biggest negatives: • The water flow is precise, yes, but not fast enough for French Press b.e.. There are other kettles which provide both. • The lid is not sealed - it's leaking when I our out a bit faster. Why not seal it? And by the way: I do not think the built quality is that good.

Like the shape of the kettle, but otherwise this is the kettle I use that I like www.electrolux.se/kitchen/small-kitchen-appliances/kettles-water-filters/kettle/eewa7800/ and I'm afraid this link is in swedish, but perhaps you can find it on english. A thing with this is that you have about 1m cable that you can rulle up under the platform. Then my brother uses this one www.severinshop.se/frukost/tekokare-3479 that he bought after me and like , but he don't use the step setting on it. But otherwise this ones are good and keep the temp as they say it is, even if you only have the set temp it has from the start. But other then that is has a good pur and don't drip at all.

Disagree on your comment on the cables, on both this and the bonavita review. Short with the option to add an extension is WAY better than long with the obligation to store/tuck/manage when it's not needed.

Over a couple days of use, the noise is really loud. Someone should take the decibel levels on this thing. I think mine may be defective. It’s really loud and it makes really loud popping and cracking noises.

honestly i have both this one and the regular version for the stove, and this one has rusted over inside so bad compared ot the other. Also the capacity is just very small, if you are looking to make cofee than yes this is good but for someone who drinks alot of just tea or hot water this is not good

I looked at one in person and thought the build quality was terrible. Every switch and the dial was extremely cheap plastic and wobbly. The gooseneck felt like I could pull it out of the kettle with my bare hands. Anyone else agree? Or did I just see a worn out product?

These expensive kettles to me just aren't worth their salt. For that price you can get a cheap glas kettle for boiling & a thermos to hold the boiled water (ofcourse preheat with a little hot water to keep the water temperature). For temperature control just pour into the fairness cup before pouring onto the tea. As for the limescale buildup use a filter such as brita and vuialla, no limescale. These kettles just aren't worth it for now.

Ok I just stopped watching the video as soon as you mentioned that the end of the spout is sharp and potentially dangerous. For this price level I expect that to be nicecly rounded off. Scratching this kettle off my list!

If you take into consideration that this kettle is at the top in terms of cost, I don't think you are being picky about the less-than-top-quality switches in the back. I mean you pay top dollar, you shouldn't get "plasticky" switches. No?

I was ready to buy the kettle but noticed it has a printed "MAX" inside the kettle which is SUPER disappointing because those prints often contain lead and you better believe they leach with high heat! I wish they had just gone with a metal outdent...

Just found your review. Nice kettle, but too bad their business practice is sketchy - I have ordered 3 of them in the past 6 months. 1 was cancelled with no explanation. 2 were ordered while listed "in stock" only to then get email after email saying their inventory was delayed in arriving (they cancelled the 1st after the third email; I cancelled the 2nd after the 2nd email). So clearly NOT in stock. I can't give my money to a company who so freely lies to customers.
