First, I really appreciate these videos, thank you! A question: I have a newer red plastic model and my Gallagher fence tester is only showing a max of 6kv at the terminals. With the ground probe in the dirt, I’m only getting 3.7kv…despite all this meter on the unit is showing 10kv. Is it possible to get 10kv from this unit? Dealing with sheep and need this unit to push at least 8kv on the wire. What do you think?

When the unit is all hooked up to the fence and ground, test across the unit again. If it shows high at the unit when all hooked up, but lower at the fence, you're losing power down on the ground side, which means you need more ground rods. The voltage on the unit isn't the real kicker though, the joules is what shocks the animal. I honestly don't think that unit will be stout enough even at 6-10kv for sheep. Sheep and goats need at a minimum 3-4 output joules to get past their wool or hollow insulated hair, and I don't personally think that unit is anywhere close to 3-4 output joules. A 5 joule unit at 6kv will hit a lot harder than a 1 joule unit at 10kv. More Joules is more shock power even if the voltage is higher.

@@FencerFixerRepairLLCKansasCity awesome, thanks for the info. I’ll hook up and test. I need some portability and so I kind of rigged this up to a deep cycle battery and 100w panel. I rotate pastures and so the unit and ground rod tends to move a bit, but only powers about 800’ of fence at a time. Are there any 12v units you’d recommend for my situation? I’d have just gone with 110v but the ability to move the unit around is important.

I should add: if there aren’t any 12v units that fit the bill, could I run an inverter from the battery or will this cause issues? Thanks again for the help, I’m pretty new to fencing, especially rotating paddocks.

@@jray7629 There are 12v units out there that will be plenty powerful enough, but they're not cheap to buy and you'll run down a battery fairly quick, 1-5 days depending on the size battery and size fence charger. The model I would consider looking at is the Gallagher MBS400 or MBS800. Very well made units, 3 year warranty, and can be mounted outside in the weather. Or look at the Cyclops 12v models called the Cyclops Champ or Brute 12v versions. They're cheaper than Gallagher, but only carry a 1 year warranty and need to be protected if they're outside, no gasket on their units and water can and will get inside. The Gallagher units are an investment but a longer warranty, very well made inside and out, and can be mounted outside with no issues.

@@FencerFixerRepairLLCKansasCity after chasing 30 sheep through all the neighbors back fields, I don’t mind spending a little more. Haha! I have a 100w panel I usually keep on the battery; is that alright to keep on while the energizer is in operation? We have lots of sun here and I haven’t had issues with the battery running low.

Those Analog fence testers were made in Taiwan for Parmak years ago, but a few years ago whoever that company was stopped or Parmak told them they didn't want them any longer. The good thing though is that we're working with a company in India that manufactures electric fence units and are looking into trying to make one that we can sell here in the States.
