My dad has an International branded weed burner, supposedly able to fence upwards of 140 acres, and last time he had it checked a few years ago (5-10 maybe?) and the person said the charge was getting weak, but that it would still work for the (at most) few acres of garden, that we have.he also said that it would likely be unfixable when it finally did ever bite the dust. Now, it quit working the other day, and I want him not to have to get a new one if he doesn't have to, but the TV repair shop that tested that kind of equipment last time it was tested, is now owned by our local hospital and has been turned into a physical therapy place, and I don't know the first thing about electric fencers to know what to test or how to test. All I know is that the device looks to be at least 20-30 years old, and the blinking light on the front that signifies that it's working isn't blinking, and the GFCI outlet it's plugged into doesn't appear tripped, and I've tried resetting it as well, but nothing works... The fuses in the cord, (something not usually found in the US, but is prominent in Europe I'm told) also appear working, according to my dad... I haven't really taken a good look at it, so I don't know what lights it has for sure, but if I remember correctly from the last time I looked at it, the silver canister is in the middle of the lefthand side of the front panel, the open air light with plastic surround is on the righthand middle of the front panel, while I THINK there was a similar light on the right side side panel, depending on orientation... So, I guess the only main question is, would it be better to just get a new one or try to get someone to fix the one we have so we can reuse it, and is there anything out there these days that would be considered a good replacement??? I just don't want to have to get a hunk of junk that needs to be replaced soon after purchase, and I know that older devices, depending on function, generally work better or longer than newer devices of the same type, but also, I don't want to be the guy that believes everything they hear about new fencers being bad either...

There's really nothing made today that is a weed burner type, though with the right size joule rated unit, you can fight through some weeds, but you would need a 5-10 joule unit to really deal with weeds. Also, don't always look at the mileage ratings on units, that's a pie in the sky best case scenario, which is a single wire of 12.5 gauge high tensile wire, that's perfectly clean of debris. Add multiple wires, use that braided wire stuff, have cross fencing, grass on the fence, and that mileage rating goes right out the window. There are good brands out there still today, but there's also not so good ones. The better ones are going to cost more of course. But depending on how big of an area your wanting to fence in, what kind of animals you're dealing with, is the fence clean or not, there's a good one out there that will do the job and last awhile, maybe not 20 years, but it should last 5-10+ excluding lightning and such. That unit could likely be fixed if the right place looked at it, me, but I would really just have to have it here to be able to go through it. A lot of people don't need with the older stuff, because of they can't just swap a board in and out or whatever, then they'll tell you it's a lost cause and to buy a new one. I would find out when you plug it in, give it about a minute or two and see if it starts making a humming sound like it's trying to run and do anything. If it doesn't, possibly it's just the little canister thing that's went bad. If it does start to make the humming sound, but they lights aren't coming on, then it's definitely having issues internally. There could be other issues that will cause similar faults with the unit as well. We have had fairly good success fixing the older stuff. You can also email me at [e-mail]

I do thank you for giving me some things I can check out on the device though... I think my dad is thinking about just getting a brand new unit though, from what he has told me today, so I guess what I'm wondering now is whether it's worth anything in it's not working state as an antique or something like that?

On a weed burner type, they never get that high. Maybe 600vac is about the average on the high side. You can't use a regular electric fence tester to test the output for any kind of weed burner unit, you need to use a digital ac multimeter.

@@markholt1405 I don't have anymore. The place that used to make them here in the states stopped about 3 years ago, so whatever was still out there has basically dried up. If and when you can find them, people want a small fortune for them, $70-$80 plus shipping and eBay is about the only place that you can sometimes find them.
