Hi Harry, From a repair guys stand point, my money is on Gallagher. I like the Cyclops, but they have their issues. I hardly ever see any new Gallagher units come in. I see plenty of 10, 20, 30+ year old Gallagher units come in, but that's mostly from age or maybe lightning. Their current models are top notch and they're being designed to last 10+ years, excluding lightning of course. Cyclops have good lightning protection in their units, but they still get hit like everything else can. Gallagher units also carry a 3 year warranty right out of the box and Cyclops even though they're cheaper to buy, they only carry a 1 year warranty right out of the box. If you can use AC power, that's the way to go, more shock for the money. Depending on what animals your trying to keep in or keep out, and if your fence will have a lot of weeds touching it or it's stay fairly clean, that'll make a difference in what size unit to look at. On a Gallagher unit, I'd say M360 if your fence will be fairly clean and you're dealing with cattle. But if your fence is going to be dogged down with weeds or you're dealing with goats or sheep, I'd go to the M800. They make the M560, but you could go that unit if your fence is clean and with cattle. On a Cyclops, on there above scenarios, I'd look at the Cyclops Stallion on clean fence stuff, or jump up to the Champ model. I don't think you would need to go any bigger than that. Another brand that's decent, and made in the states too, is Power Wizard. They make a pretty solid unit. They're not quite as good as Gallagher long term, but they're just as good as a Cyclops I think. They also carry a 3 year warranty on most of their units and they're cheaper than Gallagher is price wise. A Power Wizard PW3000 would be the smallest I'd go with, and a PW6000 would be the biggest I'd go with. If you look them up online, they're not too bad on price and they are decently built. Hopefully this gives you some good info to go on. I'm just an independent repair guy, I have no ties to any brand and I just work on these things everyday and see what's good and bad out there. If you're going to have to use solar, Gallagher is still the way to go. They have probably the best built solar units out there. I hardly ever see any of their new solar units come in. I do see plenty of their last generation of units come through, but they weren't near as well made as their current solar stuff is. You don't get near the shock power for the money as you do an AC powered unit, but that goes for any brand. I would look at the new Gallagher S20 as the smallest one to go with. Or jump into the S40 or maybe S100. All of those are good units and well put together and really handy on installation. Unless they get submerged in a flood, they're pretty sealed up from moisture.
